- Carly McLondon, United Kingdom4 contributionsA great new trailA great addition this year with the new trail, if it was longer it could rival Kew Gardens. Hope to see a longer trail next year and the price kept reasonable. Really enjoyedVisited December 2022Travelled as a coupleWritten 19 December 2022
- Hertie21 contributionsChristmas lights at Hatfield House.I took my 4 grandchildren to see the lights as a Christmas treat. Parking was smooth and well signed. The lights were a delight and imaginative. I paid £30 for 3 rides each for the children. A helta skelter and swingboats were the only ones there. Very tame and disappointing to kids used to more sophisticated entertainment. Expensive too. We didn't eat there as l know what a money pit fast food is at these places. We arrived at 5.30 and left at 6.45. Total cost including parking was £130. Its was ok but I doubt we will go again next year.Visited December 2022Travelled with familyWritten 24 December 2022
- Parker-B2 contributionsWonderful guide and houseDermot must be the best guide in the UK ! He brought alive the history of Hatfield Palace and House to our group, and sent tingles down our spines when recounting the story of Elizabeth I watching over 100 noblemen as her chief advisor William Cecil laid out the new Queen's plans at the beginning of her 45 year long reign. There are some amazing pictures of Elizabeth I with their symbolism or 'propaganda' as Dermot put it! A wonderful house with its amazing wood panelling and acres and acres of England's 'green and pleasant land'. Allow at least four hours to explore. There's a real tennis court to see and the old Palace to visit, as well as a lovely courtyard and a few upmarket shops all inside the grounds near near the village of Old Hatfield. The only real let down was the food at the Cafe. The tuna panini and the tortilla wrap with falafel and beetroot were the driest sandwiches we have ever tasted in our lives. So easy to have proper moist sandwiches on offer. Some of the group found one male member of staff in the cafe offhand. Dermot said how privileged he felt working at Hatfield for the Salisburys every day, but I'm sure his lord and master would be appalled at the quality of the only 'sandwiches' on offer!Visited July 2023Written 9 July 2023
- Glenys L1 contributionWonderful day out at Hatfield HouseMy husband has bad mobility. The staff at HH couldn’t be more accommodating. From arranging a buggy with Neil at the helm to getting to and from the car park, to having a wheelchair whilst going around the house. The staff were so knowledgable Dermot took us around and along with other guides gave us interesting facts on the house. When needing to go up to another floor Dermot took us to a lift, everything was made so easy for us. When we had finished around the house Neil went out of his way to get us settled in the park so we could have a picnic and when we finished took us back to the car park. ⎌All the staff were happy and helpful. Five stars are not enough I’d give them. 10/10Visited August 2023Travelled with familyWritten 11 August 2023
- joycestubbs37St. Albans, United Kingdom4 contributionsAn excellent day out provided visitors are aware of the disabled options availableLast Sunday our elderly French visitors were very keen to see Hatfield House, despite their serious walking difficulties. The rather expensive tickets gave access to house and gardens, but without any reduction for elderly or disabled visitors. (My attempts to find out about disabled access both by email and phone had gone unanswered.) After a most enjoyable visit round the House and a light lunch we found we were able to hop on the buggy for disabled visitors and were given a first class tour of the park by Neil, who was friendly and obliging as well as being enthusiastic and well-informed. I believe that all disabled visitors would benefit from the awareness shown by Neil and his colleagues in order to feel that they too are equally welcome. Until that point the lack of response to my advanced enquiries made me doubt that welcome. We now know, thanks to Neil, that wheelchair access is available via the kitchen and from there to the first floor, thereby avoiding the struggle to climb lots of stairs in the house. Buggy drivers like Neil are also happy to drive disabled visitors to the entrance of the very fine Little Gardens (which are quite large). Thank you Neil for making our day special.Visited August 2023Written 24 August 2023
- thewillowPerth, Australia747 contributionsWorthy visit short train ride from Kings CrossLovely historic house to visit. (Still) A family owned home & lived in. It has its own lovely chapel which survived the fire in 1835 that killed the Marchioness if Salisbury. Over 400 years of history. Queen Elizabeth II would have visits to the house. The property is on 40 acres. The house is full of artefacts, art works & furniture. There is quite a lot to see other than the house. Well worth a visit.Visited August 2023Travelled with friendsWritten 2 September 2023
- GeraldoRadlett, United Kingdom232 contributionsDisappointing that the house is closed so muchHatfield House is a real gem to visit - but most frustratingly is frequently closed to visitors. On our recent visit we were able to tour the gardens which are delightful and the old Palace. We were most fortunate to have a personal guide of the old Palace given by Dermot. He brought alive the history of Henry VIII and his six wives and their connection with the house. It was a magical experience thanks to Dermot.Visited September 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 11 September 2023

We were looking for a Christmas trip out with the family, a trip that would include maybe a show, lights, Christmas markets etc. when looking on line we stumbled across the Hatfield House Tudor experience + Woodland walk, this experience also included Christmas carols, although when we arrived we established the carols were only on certain days and unfortunately not on the day we were there. There was supposed to be stalls selling food and drink in the stables courtyard, this in fact was a stall selling pizza, a stall selling waffles and a drinks stall selling tea, coffee etc. there were a few shops around the edge of the courtyard yard and although the experience went on until 7.30pm, the shops were closed by 5.30pm.
The woodland walk was a stroll around a small area at the rear of Hatfield House which didn’t take long as the gardens are closed this time of year. Then a brief look in the kitchen. The house was lit with colourful lights which was very nice, and probably the highlight of this trip.
The cost for our trip was £150.00 for 4 adults and 2 children, which included £12.00 to park 2 cars. It was noted while we were there that people were arriving in cars just to take their dogs for a walk and parking in the same car park as we did and not paying a penny, why were we charged for parking?
All-in-all, this was a massive rip off, I would urge anybody looking to visit for this experience, look at your money and think again.

The video advert for this event looked promising and at £28 per ticket plus fees meant almost £60 entry for two of us.
It was suggested it would take 45 mins to an hour to view the 'visually spectacular and thoughtful installations' but in fact we were half way round a woodland walk in addition to the attractions within 50 mins.
The Carriage of Elegance was a small passenger cart in no way fit for a Queen or anyone really with a willow horse in situ. It bore no resemblance to the carriage depicted on line or in the guide brochure.
The kitchen display wasn't bad but could be seen in a few minutes and then we exited into the outdoors again for the final exhibits.
It should be noted that none of the displays are manned and piped music is played to give some atmosphere. The interactive items are all soaking wet or frosty, the stringed instruments are derelict and missing strings and appear to have been out all night. These are described as 'Costumes props and instruments aplenty with some to try yourself'.
The photos may give some indication to the poor levels of entertainment.
The setting is beautiful but the Fantastical Christmas Revels are a disgrace.
We felt thoroughly swindled as did other visitors we met on the woodland walk.
A far better time would be had visiting any of the garden centres in the area for a truly happy Christmas experience.

The Fantastic Christmas Revels - 2023
We visited this beautiful mystical garden at night lit by magical colours illuminating strange creatures and ancient revellers. Well worth a look and on hand if you lose your way is your guide Dermott.

If you happen to visit Hatfield House, make sure you do not miss the guided tour of the Old Palace. Dermot is so passionate and descriptive that gives life to the old palace and transfers you to a past era like you are watching a live documentary. First time I leave a guided tour and I feel so enriched with knowledge and with a bigger love for British history. Thank you Dermot, we will be back!

I could only visit the Palace as seemingly main House is only open for 3 months now instead of previous six months prior to Covid. However the tour by Dermot was utterly enthralling due to his knowledge and passion for his subject. I will be back in the summer to see the House etc. Thanks Dermot.

We visited for half term. We chose to visit on a day with the goulish old Palace tour running.
We had a bit of time before our tour so stopped for coffee and cake before having a browse in the shops - the jewellery store was a highlight, not sure my husband is in agreement! Beautiful pieces and the staff were lovely.
Then we waited for the tour. It didn't disappoint. Queen Elizabeth 1st lady in waiting was brilliant! Very entertaining and engaging, the kids certainly learned and remembered things. The walk was OK, through the woods with plenty of characters to see along the way, but it fell a little flat after the tour. Some sort of quiz/ trail with things to look for and note with a little.prize attention end would have kept the kids' interest a little longer.
Overall, it definitely exceeded expectations, and the highlight was the tour guide!

The visitors are positiveky greeted by a team of people who recommended we took the guided tour of the Old Palace. Although we have already visited the place, we had the privilege of a “private tour” as there were only the two of us, with a passionate guide who shared his very thorough knowledge of the history that took place there. Which later brought us to walk the grounds to the old oak etc. Very interesting visit in a beautiful house and park.

Do you have to pay to walk the grounds and park? From what I've seen on Google Maps there are multiple possible points of entry that are not supervised, nor are there any fences in place. A bit odd.

Hi - there is one main entrance off the car park. You can walk around the buildings for free, but have to pay to enter the gardens and park areas. This is still a family home, with the family in residence at times. It’s well worth the visit. We loved the tour as well - the guide brought it all to life.
Safe travels!

Will the house be open Easter Saturday 2019? What are the facilities for the elderly, is the house easy to walk round/Not lots of steps/places to sit?
Hatfield H
Hatfield, UK
Hi Hannah, the house will be open on Easter Saturday as we re-open to the public on the 6th April (however will be closed on Good Friday).
We have a buggy service which can be used by our visitors at any point during their visit, to transport you to the various points of interest. Any member of staff can request this for you throughout the day. There is a Victorian lift within the house, which can be used by visitors who struggle to use the stairs. Just ask one of our members of staff and they will be able to assist. There is also a chair in each room of the house for visitors who are unable to stand for long periods of time. If you require further information please do not hesitate to contact us via our website.

Unfortunately the House, Park and Gardens are all now closed to the public for the season and so this would not be possible. We will be opening back up on the 6th April for the 2019 season. We hope to see you next year! Thank you.

I will be visiting Hatfield house in September. I heard that there is only one date that the old palace will be open during my stay, so I am planning my visit for that day. I see the house is open from 11-5, how much time should I allow to see both the house and the old palace? I am traveling solo.

The tour around the old palace needs to be booked on arrival and takes about an hour. You need a couple of hours for the house although it can be done in a lot less, depending on the detail you go into.
