Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

Sorry I’m Christian but I liked the temple. It was very fancy and Buddhist but I’m not a Buddhist, I’m Christian so yeah.

Beautiful place to go and meditate where all books and food are free to enjoy alongside the resident community. Wonderful retreats and meditation groups (ALBA and BWN) for weekend days and online sessions. Been going for years for sits, retreats and peaceful walks. Love it so much and the people there too. Thank you monastic family for opening your home for us all.

Visited about 13 years ago, found it so beautiful - not anymore. Rows of buildings upon buildings leading up ot the temple. Lost its appeal. Took my MIL to see the beautiful place... quite a downer on the mood. I had hyped it up so much.. it didn't live up to what I remember it used to be.

We had a pre planned visit booked here with an allocated time to arrive, unfortunately due to unforeseen family emergency we Weren't able to attend at that time. We did however drop off some items we had purchased. We were staying in the holiday inn in Hemel Hempstead and this was actually a 20 min drive from there, not a 4min walk as previously stated.

I first came here when it was mostly muddy fields. Yet it had more spiritual essence and good will than it does now as a plush extensive enterprise. Despite knowing new visitors come here, there is no central information point or anyone to ask questions. One may ask a passing monk/nun or fellow bemused visitor and generally get no proper answer.

The original head monk was a very spiritual and uplifting presence. The current head much less so. He does sit after lunch to take questions, but his eyes are usually fixed on more lucrative visitors for dana. The order in which lunch is taken is strictly followed, daily. First the head monk then senior and junior monks. Only then can any nun, senior or otherwise take their food. Equality it seems hasn't reached Amaravati, though technology certainly has.

Saturday meditation often feels a chore for the monks, I've encountered those who ramble or are barely comprehensible, and have thrown together a talk. Those you see around have a busy, don't bother me look, with a scarcely disguised annoyance, unwelcoming and not in the least bit open hearted or warm.

This is a very rich organisation funded by visitors and benefactors. However, the ordained show little respect to those same people.

The woods nearby are pleasant, as there's no one there. However, the main site lacks any of the original qualities.

One day I went to meditation classes and see the temples. The temple was beautiful and full of peace and some magical monks very nice and peaceful. Meditation lasts about two hours with breaks, but after that time I was filled with peace that I missed so much, I recommend everyone try it.

I very much enjoyed the guided meditation. The gardens are also lovely for a mindful walk. A place to just escape!

I have visited the workshops 2-4pm on Sat’s over the last couple of months. I found my first one to be the most informative; they do have different monks running the workshops each week, so you always take away something from each of them.
I went to find some peace in a busy world where I never seem to stop running around. I found some of the other visitors a little disrespectful, Turning up with coffee and talking through some of it, but nothing was any trouble for those running the workshops. I need to learn to accept everybody as they are and not be disappointed in people.

I would recommend, even if just to stop for a couple of hours.
