Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

We didn't know it was there, we were trying to go through the arcade but the words 'underground' and 'museum' caught my eye and I persuaded my other half to go down the stairs. Greeted by the loveliest gentleman who clearly loved Ryde and his job. Well you could spend hours down there and not see everything (in fact we had to miss the naughty post cards for fear of missing our ferry, but will be back!). Never have I seen so much and so many exhibits in such a small place. Though it is a tardis. Then we got a tour of the unique ice well that they are trying to turn into a proper exhibit once health and safety is met. People should visit this museum, its a treasure trove with a very modest entrance fee.

This little museum tells you the fascinating history of Ryde and its growth. It is packed full of exhibits covering everything from the development of the town, the trade and commerce and Ryde at war. It is a great example of how to do something well with such an eclectic range of exhibits. It now also incorporates the collection of Donald McGill postcards (reviewed separately) which is a real bonus. The volunteer staff are really kind, pleasant and helpful and obviously enjoy what they do and enjoy sharing their interest.

A small museum built inside a Victorian Shopping Arcade with a knowledable and very enthusiastic volunteer staff. The heritage centre contains a host of interesting items including the famous collection of saucy british seaside postcards (some of which were banned at the time).
It is a gold mine of interesting objects and stories from 19th century town maps to pieces of a WWII Mustang fighter found off shore.
It also has a unique film of the invention and development of the commercial hovercraft which were built on the Island (Ryde has one terminal of the last hovercraft ferry still operating in the UK).
Overall a facinating place to spend a few hours

Amazing to see so much information about Ryde. Seeing cattle arriving on the island by boat, painted exactly as my own great great grandfather brought them to the island was especially emotional

What a shame I cannot visit this facility. Being a wheelchair user I am denied access. This is normal for the Isle of Wight which does not generally welcome disabled people.

Talk about a hidden gem.The McGill postcard collection is fab for starters, so much social history and so funny and lots of non P.C.
Photos and memorabilia of Ryde and surrounding area second to none, and the volunteers running the show are so helpful and bend over backwards to answer your questions and find things for you to peruse.
Great for residents and visitors alike. A trip back in time!

A pretty cellar under Union Street with clean white walls and beautifully arranged for us to see the old ice-house and underground sweet ovens used to serve the old holiday resort of Ryde. Very down to earth and non-pushy people in there to help you if you want it . . Museum has Ryde's social history from the Victorian holiday, tiny children's school desk and slate, 1960's school photos of Ryde Academy as it was, the two war efforts, 1970 IOW Festival to of course the bonanza of Ryde for seaside fun and the Hovercraft here. Teenagers and children free entry, adults £3. As we were nearing closing time, I was given a free second ticket to extend my visit on another day. Spare reading glasses are available if you've left your own in the car. My teenage son went with a group of students from school and liked it so much that I went down with him during the school holidays. . . Oh it's great, you've got to see it!

friendly staff, museum one had lots and lots of funny postcards some which at the time were banned it depends how ones mind works how you read them! Then in the next there is an exhibition on the men who fought in wartime Ryde. The last is a museum about the history of Ryde all interesting. Lots of steps down to exhibit and not expensive to get in.

Run by volunteers, this is a little gem. A record of local history displayed in an unusual setting, underground. Photos and artefacts tracing families, buildings, Victorian Ryde, occupations, theatres, carnivals and all sorts of other interesting bits and bobs. A treasure trove.

The museum is lovingly put together by group of locals and is situated downstairs in the Royal Victoria Arcade on Union Street. It has some very interesting artefacts for those interested in local history and is well worth a visit if you're in Ryde. It's not the biggest museum ever but great for locals and visitors alike if you have an hour to spare.
