We had the most amazing time doing the Pit at The Escapement Margate. From the moment we arrived we were "in" the adventure. Head engineer Tom set the scene and got the kids excited before heading us down to the Pit itself where we donned miners hats complete with lamps and headed underground. The first 5 minutes were a flurry of excited people all trying to do everything at once but once we settled into it (and with a few helpful hints over the walkie talkie from Tom) we found our feet and started solving the problems. The tasks and problems were harder than we expected but in a good way – nothing was obvious and we genuinely had to work things out – but were not so hard that you felt like you were in an exam! They are also created in such a way that age didnt make a huge difference. Our 8 year old worked out how to use the dynamite and the 10 year old solved a switch problem that I still don't understand now even having had it explained! The whole experience took around 90 minutes with the adventure itself around 75 and that was perfect for all of us. A really fun mix of brain teasers and entertainment that kept all 4 of us really entertained. We are already working out when to go back to to do the others!

We had a fantastic time! I came with five friends and we did the Pirates task. Our host, Lewis, was very entertaining and the task was exactly the right level of difficult for us.

It was our first experience at an escape room. An impromptu date night activity and it was great fun. We had no idea what to expect. I went in feeling pretty confident but I was thrown on a few occasions and was glad I had the wife with me. Great team building/communication activity and looking forward to the next one. The cherry on the top was the host Lewis, who set the tone for a fun evening and really made the whole experience.

So much fun. This is our second visit and we'll certainly be back again. The Pit is the best one yet - it's so interactive

This is our second room at Escapement in Margate and we loved it even more than the previous one. We took on The Pit and it was great fun and brilliantly introduced by our host. Highly recommended - we will be coming back to do the third room in the future.

We as a team managed to screw the game up by posing the wrong stone in the wrong hole the host that was running the game was so good with us 😀

Hi
Do you actually get locked into the room? We are looking to book but one person has a bit of anxiety over being locked in a small space?
Thanks
Lewis H
Margate, UK32 contributions
Hello TamsinMB,
You are not typically locked in an escape room as escaping is not usually the goal. It’s all about story telling and theatre, the door you go in with is not normally the door you leave with. That first door is normally always left open.
If we ever have young or nervous players we can even leave this door slightly open so you can see the real world!
Our Egyptian and Pit Games have exits that don’t form part of the game but you are able to leave at any point. In our pirates game the first area you play in is closed and opens after 2-5 minutes, this can be left open upon request.

Lewis

Hi, we are a group of seven looking for an escape room in Kent. Are any of your rooms suitable for that many people?
Lewis H
Margate, UK32 contributions
Hello Grace P,
Yes they are, you will need to call to arrange on 01843 449908.
We always suggest smaller teams because players get to experience more of their adventure, but can easily accommodate larger teams if necessary.

Lewis

We want to take my 11 year old brother to this escape room for his birthday as he loves game and puzzles and is extremely mature for his age (as I know they’re designed for 16+). Which room is the most suitable for a puzzle/video game loving type? Thanks!

Hello kf123018,
We welcome children at our venue and help them become active members of any escape room team!
We only allow children under 16 as long as one of the players is an adult, over 21.
Our three experiences are all entirely different, we also allows our games to finish without kicking out after a designated time. This means, if a team of first timers want to take on a tougher challenge they can.
However, with this in mind, we always suggest starting your escape adventure in our Pirates of Polaris game, especially with children as it’s easy for everyone to get involved and get into the character!
We hope to see you soon,
Regards,
Lewis

Hi! would it be suitable to take my active mother to? she is 61 and very fit and often found hiking up mountains (albeit a bit slower than she used to). I won't be offended if you say no, just want to check it is the right "vibes" before I book :)

Hello Anna,
The short answer to your question is absolutely yes! Our eldest puzzler is 98 years old. Escape rooms, in their nature, are not typically accessible, but an able bodied person who is capable of going up and down a set of stairs shouldn’t find anything too challenging in any of the rooms. The experiences we create are more akin to a murder mystery and rich story telling.
If you have any questions please call us on 01843 449908.
Regards,
Lewis (Director, The Escapement)

what days are they open
Lewis H
Margate, UK32 contributions
Hello Nick B,
We are open 7 days a week 10am - 10pm. With the nature of escape rooms we advise to book early in advance as weekends are difficult to get a slot on the day. You can see our calendar on our website or call 01843 449908.
Regards,
Lewis

Hello kitkate2017,
Yes we definitely are! We are building it as we speak, we will expect to have an announcement to the room ‘theme’ for January with the game being playable around March/April.

Is this the only escape rooms opened by the company? They look really good/well thought out but Margate is a little far...

Hi Mgriffiths2519,
Yes, we currently only have one branch in Margate. There's lots to do in Margate such as Dreamland, the Turner Centre gallery and Shell Grotto if you want to make a day of it!
