Brilliant little gem of a museum
A charming, quirky, educational little museum clearly run by people with a wonderful sense of humour who feel passionately about our crustaceous friends and the environment. Alongside the witty exhibits and displays (including the laugh out loud one in the loo) we were treated to a fun, interactive microscope show of various hairy, crusty, bug eyed creatures and all for FREE! Yes, there are some messages about the impact of capitalism on our climate but frankly, anyone who is offended by those are the ones most in need of visiting this place… Go and visit (and join/buy some stuff on the way out!)

    Loved It!
Equal parts hilarious, eccentric and informative! I learned more about crabs than I ever knew I wanted to, but it was presented in a really engaging and enjoyable way. The gentleman that talked us through the sciencey bits is clearly extremely knowledgeable and passionate, but also a joy to listen to! It was one of our favourite parts of our weekend in Margate!

    Unique and superb
We were delighted, surprised, enlightened, amused and heartened by this wonderful and passionate mini museum. At turns humorous, serious, playful and incisive, staffed by extremely knowledgeable and friendly people. What a wonderful experience, please do support it, more museums should be like this!

    The Social Construction of Crabs
I love crabs*, and I love The Social Construction of Reality by Berger and Luckmann, so you can imagine how excited I was when I discovered this museum! Not only that, but whoever is responsible for the information panels is hilarious. And, as an added bonus, gammons seem to hate the place. A perfect way to spend an hour or two, and well worth the £4 donation. *Actually, it turns out my favourite crab — the horseshoe crab — is actually a spider!

Get ready to giggle, learn and have a blast
I absolutely LOVED our visit to the Crab Museum. It was full of interesting facts, hilarious and charming illustrations, curious tales and even some fibs to make sure you're really paying attention. The team there are amazing, insanely educated and SO passionate about all things crab. Chase did not fail to make us laugh out loud and teach us so many things about the wonderful word of crabs. I would 100% recommend. Please go. It's free and it's SO worth it. It's important we support one-of-a-kind and quirky establishments like this so please, please visit if you are in Margate and fancy a funny, informative and silly afternoon. Stay clawesome my fellow crab enthusiasts 🦀😍

    Interesting and fun filled
Great fun and best of all it's staffed by friendly, fun folk. A great little museum with all sorts of information about crabs. Not the dull and boring stuff but fun facts, humorous stories and great visuals. The two staff that were present when we went would have talked to our eight year old all day and I'm sure that he would have found them as interesting as I did. Only opens Friday to Sunday at the moment so make the effort, it's well worth it.

Crabs, crabs, everywhere - but not a crab in sight
This was an informative, interesting and funny museum. Or you could want to know about crabs from the beginning of time, almost to the end of it. One thing it doesn't have are any actual live crabs. You might think that as a bit of a let down, but in practice, it was all part of the humor of the place. Free to enter and some lovely quirky things in the gift shop.

    Crabs! Magnificent Rebellious Crabs!!!!!
Crabs! Magnificent Crabs! Beautiful Crabs! If you like crabs & the odd bit of decapod misinformation and don't like the patriarchy, colonialism or capitalism this is the museum for you! Me and my wife decided on a holiday spot because we were drawn to the social media and hype over the Margate Crab Museum, and it lived up to and exceeded every hope and dream we had. We laughed We cried We laughed We learnt Bravo bravo you crabby wonders. We loved it!

Where do I even start with this review? Somewhere around the beginning of the Cretaceous period of time which is where you'll start learning about crabs as you enter the hallway of the museum to a timeline of, well, all time.

The museum is not only a humorous and touching ode to crabs, run by its dedicated and devoted owners, but a subversive critique on the modern condition.

It's possible that one day we will all evolve back into crabs and maybe they're trying to get ahead of the tide, hopeful their legacies will rise above us on the future beaches of Yorkshire. Dynasty's are not born in one lifetime but over many. May god have mercy on the serfs of the great great great great great great great great great great great great (x a lot) grandchildren of the curators of this beautiful crab shrine.

In all seriousness this is an amazing little break up of your day if you're visiting Margate. Plus it sells beers so get drunk and then take a stroll to the beach and walk into the ocean, embracing your future crab lords.

This was a last minute rainy afternoon decision and was a really good one. Educational in a fun way and the staff were both informed and entertaining. What I thought would be a 10 minute visit took an hour. Recommend but do engage with the staff - they really want to share their knowledge with visitors

We are obsessed with the crab museum. A sweet, wholesome, funny and fun experience. Will be back! These guys are so talented. The whole experience is amazing for both adults and children. The humour in the writing is delicate, subtle, zany. We laughed a lot! This place serves as an excellent example of how art need not be pretentious or serious; good art is just art that makes you feel something. Amazing for kids - they provided work sheets and I overheard one of the employees talking through a sheet with a young child in a beautifully kind and sweet way. If you’re in Margate, you’re selling yourself short by not entering the crab museum!!!

This place is great and bought us nothing but joy! quirky, entertaining and the guys who run it are absolutely amazing. Alongside the lighthearted sense of humour in the whole place the guys kept my 10 year old mesmerised with facts and spent ages with him showing him micro-organisms (is that a word?!) Through the high powered microscope. Where else can you watch a video installation of a bearded lady telling you about giant crabs?!

Wonderful, slightly bonkers, thought provoking and entertaining museum. Clearly a total passion project for the owners and brilliantly done. We learned lots about crabs but the museum touches on climate change, social justice, philosophy of science, colonialism, truth, museology, the history of medicine and wasps.

The guy running it claims he sees crabs as a “gateway animal” to other ideas and they’ve somehow managed to do this in a way that makes total sense and with light touch and lots of humour. We loved it and it was a highlight of our trip to Margate.

We absolutely loved Crab Museum. It's very small but it kept a 6-year-old girl fully occupied for 30 minutes and we all learned interesting facts, such as crabs urinate form the green gland located just beneath the front of their shell which means CRABS WEE OUT OF THEIR FACES. I really recommend this place with its laudable ambition to educate the world about crabs. A great place for a visit.

As a group ranging in age from 18 months to 68 years we all enjoyed everything about it. The children were definitely entertained by the displays and the worksheet but mostly by the staff who engaged their interest effortlessly.
The adults were definitely entertained too - by the witty comments and amusing illustrations. It has a serious side too but you will leave smiling - just don't leave without your lobster repellant!

One of the smallest but also the best museums in the area. The two curators are informative, engaging and passionate about crabs. They are young and able to encourage children and adults alike. A mixture of science and humour makes you want to stay a lot longer than you would expect.

The crab museum is definitely worth a visit. The information written up about the crabs was both informative, quirky and numerous. The museum isn’t big but there is enough to keep you interested for half an hour or so.

The Crab Museum

Things took a turn for the better when we wandered into the Old Town. Avoiding the advice of the guide book, we entered the Crab Museum. I learned a lot

Crabs can teach us about biology, climate change, evolutionary history and much much more. But, with the right frame of mind, they can also teach us about ourselves. TCrab Museum rolls out science, humour and philosophy into a unique and was part of our satisfyingly baffling day out.

We discovered the secrets of these remarkable animals, from the forgotten story of the giant Margate crab to what the extinct Sooty Crayfish has in common with fidget spinners.

We also bought some lobster repellent.

During our visit, Ned was showing children what was going on by way of snail action in some sand he'd dug up from the beach that morning. He displayed a magnified view on a big screen and we could watch as what looked like sandy sludge came to life thanks to technology we all could understand. It was magical.

The Team who run the Crab Museum are uttlerly nutty. I don't think I've ever enjoyed visiting a museum so much.
