Lovely!

Had such a nice visit to this adorable house, lovely people, great atmosphere and excellent cake. The people in the house were so lovely and informative about the house and the lady in the cafe was cheery and served a great cup of tea and slice of cake that was much needed on a rainy day. Big thumbs up

Lovely little National Trust property
Mar 2020
This was a lovely old farmhouse once owned by the actress Ellen Terry. It was full of theatrical memorabilia which was fascinating. The volunteers on duty were friendly and full of information about the place. Well worth a visit,

Charming National Trust Property
Sep 2019
Enjoyed my visit to Smallhythe after doing a tour and tasting just up the road at Chapel Down Winery. (It is easily walkable, but there isn't a sidewalk, so I was walking on a not-too-busy road to get here.) I didn't know anything about the actress who lived here, but enjoyed the rooms and costumes and stories in the house. The house is so creaky and crooked; I really loved it. The garden and grounds are lovely. I had a great day for this visit and enjoyed my time here.

Small Hythe place is a wonderful property once owned by the actress Ellen Terry. It’s full of history and the staff were full of interesting facts. Had a lovely tea room in the barn at the back of the main house.

A real surprise
Oct 2019
For anyone who loves either wonderful old English cottages/farmhouses or theatre and drama this is a wonderful treat. Set in lovely countryside and garden, the building is a great example of an early 16th century cottage: the interior is a treasure trove of Ellen Terry, the great Victorian Actor. The Barn theatre behind the propery is a real treat and, of course, there is the usual lovely National Trust coffee shop.

An insight into the private life of famous Victorian actress, Dame Ellen Terry
Sep 2019
Visiting Smallhythe Place, Ellen Terry's home and retreat from her career in the theatre, is a affecting experience, for she herself is so firmly there in spirit. Her costumes, letters, personal possessions etc all provide an insight into her mercurial character. But when I was last there, it was in the Library that she spoke most loudly. Artist Richard Brind, sitting at the desk there that day, has lately made it his life's work to go through every book that the actress owned, picking out gems from the texts and from the comments she scrawled on the pages in her generous, loopy handwriting. The resulting little books, such as "Weird and Wonderful Stories from the Working Library of Ellen Terry", on sale in the Reception area for a mere £3 each, make for entertaining reading, and we had a long and fascinating talk.
Ellen Terry's theatre life and love life are well documented worldwide, her private thoughts perhaps less so. But here they are in the books she chose to read, and all the more intriguing for their owner probably never having imagined they would be of interest to anyone else.

Second visit, lovely house, garden and tearoom
Sep 2019
Took a friend for a visit as I had been before and loved it. The house belonged to Ellen Terry a famous British actress. There is lots to look at in this relatively small house, and all the staff and volunteers were helpful and friendly. We visited the tearoom and it was lovely to have freshly made sandwiches not overpriced pre packaged ones. Very tasty and great friendly staff in there as well. The garden isn't too big so a small stroll was great. Lovely National Trust property and we combined it with a visit to Sissinghurst.
