This became my 'go to' fishery in 2020, and will be again for 2021... beautiful surroundings and fit hard fighting fish. I've fished this water 'on and off' for over 30 years, less so since I moved further away (to Manchester) but still well worth the trip out (takes less than 1 hr). This water can be tricky sometimes, but ''if fishing was easy it'd be called 'catching''... you get x2 lakes to go at, which generally fish well, with a good chance of a big fish. Its well run by Frank and stocked regularly from their own on lake nets. Tip - I've had great results here on a floating CDC Sedge over a submerged Nymph, rarely does this method fail to get into the fish on top or below the waterline.

My fiancee and I are new to fly fishing. We took it up recently after being cooped up on lockdown for months as an excuse to get out at the weekend. We looked into trying Barnsfold Water as an alternative to another water that we have used that has opted to close for the second lockdown. I rang ahead to confirm we didnt need to pre book and the fella on the phone said no, but they were unable to accept card. Upon arriving, it was initially a daunting site. Having only ever fished on a couple of 1 acre lakes and with only 7-8 sessions worth of experience, we were presented with 2 huge lakes that look more like reservoirs than anything. I've read that they are about 11 acres each. We couldnt find a reception but one of the regulars told us that payment is made by filling your details and ticket type on a carbon copy slip, pop it in an envelope with your payment and post it into the postbox in the hut by the car parking spot. So make sure you bring the right change. The prices can be found on the website. Im not sure which lake is which but we stuck to the furthest lake for the whole day. Reason being the lakes are quite exposed to the wind and we are newbies still learning the ropes. The top lake has trees on the North West corner that gave us some cover from the wind, albeit a tougher challenge as trout like wind. Everyone we spoke to was really helpful in offering tidbits of advice, mostly suggesting orange and white lures such as dancers, blobs and cat's whiskers, all of which was genuine and we did see people catching fish using the techniques being recommended. Had I been a better angler I might have caught using those techniques too. As it was, we noticed a lot of fish moving on the surface later in the day so we switched to some daddy long legs dry flies as a gamble and the afternoon took off. Within an hour of switching we had both had multiple fish attacking our flies. We had a crazy 5 minutes where i got a bite and half way through trying to land it my partner got one too. Then after putting both fish back i immediately got another fish on after joking that it would be great to catch a few in the last half hour. I finished the day with 3 fish which is my best count to date, and on a lake as big as this, felt like an acheivement. I must point out that i have been fortunate to land an 8lb trout another water, and a fish half the size here fought twice as hard. It was a genuine challenge to get them to the bank. I take the 'hard fighting fish' claim with a pinch of salt as everywhere says it, but here I can vouch for them. They really do mean it. All in all, we had a great day and my fiance has already upgraded her rod for next time. Well recommended.

Barnsfold is a great place to fish. Lose yourself in the scenery and everyone I’ve ever met there has been helpful with tips of what flies and depths etc. Fished here in the 80’s and got to go back at the end of last year. Took the shot just before that last cast....
