About
300 years of friendship and adventure, service and sacrifice; our museum presents the history of this illustrious regiment through the eyes of the soldiers who served. Housed in a former church in the centre of the market place, the museum is a light, bright, place with loads to discover for all the family and features a range of activities for our younger visitors. The collection includes equipment, artwork, silver, medals (including Victoria Crosses) uniforms and personal items donated to the regiment throughout the centuries. We hold regular special exhibitions, so there's always something new to explore. We are an event venue and also run education, community events and activity programmes, and have a great gift shop; perfect for picking up a present, or a treat for yourself.

Great place to visit. We received excellent advice on how best to view the collection from the person in reception. The artifacts range very wide covering several centuries of warfare in all its forms. We really enjoyed the museum.

The museum is extremely interesting and well laid out. On speaking to a member of staff (Steve) I mentioned my great Grandfather was in the Green Howard's. Steve came back to me minutes later with print outs of my Grandfather's military records, medals and other information. He even had photos of other family members. It was absolutely brilliant and we were so taken aback. Thank you so much, can't recommend the museum enough.

Thanks so much for taking the time to post such a positive review. We can't always produce a rabbit out of a hat like we did for you, but we love to be able to help people connect with their family history - check out our online research service. Even if you don't have a connection with the regiment, there's always something to learn.

Very informative, and enjoyable. Our children enjoyed doing a quiz on displays, they had to research information from displays. We enjoyed seeing all the medals on display, and the officers mess, also soldiers biographies.

We visited as a family to find out more about our grandfather's war history. The booking process was super easy and efficient. We opted for the exclusive tour. Steve, our tour guide was passionate and enthusiastic with lots of interesting stories. He gave us a really informative and captivating tour. We had a lovely coffee and cake at the start of the tour. We have also opted for the personalised research package to find out more specific information about my grandad so we are looking forwards to hearing more!

My father was in the green howards and I wanted to see how the museum was compared to the last time I visited in the 1980s when we were based in Catterick. It's so modern compared to last time. They have done all the past soldiers proud. A big shout out to Steve on reception who was full of knowledge of the green howards and made us feel so welcomed. He made my day and gave me so much information. Please visit, you won't be disappointed.

Fantastic Regimental Museum. Great afternoon visit. Wonderful explanation of the regiment’s history and at the moment a really interesting exhibition on escapes. Good couple of hours entertainment and education for my family and a little bit of a family connection. Parking a bit of a problem in Richmond but that’s not the museums problem.

Thanks for taking the time to post such a positive review, we are really glad you enjoyed your visit, and the special exhibition GREAT ESCAPES. Anyone reading this wondering about parking - park up in a space in the market place and pop into the museum or one of the shops for a parking disk - display it in your windscreen for 2hrs free parking. There's also a pay and display car park a few minutes walk away at Nuns Close.

Two friends and I recently did the history wander from the Green Howard's museum with Janet. It was a very easy walk taking in the castle, market place, church and Frenchgate and lasted about an hour and a quarter. Janet was friendly and very knowledgeable about the long military history of Richmond. She was able to answer all of our questions. We also enjoyed her vintage photos and personal stories of soldiers from WW1 and WW2, most of whom have families still living in Richmond. It was also interesting to hear about Janet's voluntary work in the museum, transcribing diaries and helping to preserve uniforms.
We had visited the museum on a previous occasion but will visit again for special exhibitions. We also like to pop into the gift shop for unusual gifts.
The history wander is highly recommended!

Really fascinating walking tour operated by the Green Howard Museum, around Richmond taking in sites of interest related to the town’s military history. Tours run Wednesday and Thursday and cost £3 pp for about 90 minutes.
Janet was an excellent guide, who answered lots of questions and ensured we went at a pace suited to our whole group. Having stayed in Richmond many times it was great to learn so much more about this beautiful town’s history. Our 13 year old found it really very interesting too!
Would definitely recommend the museum too, fascinating and beautifully presented history of the Green Howards.

I remember as a boy living in Pickering during WW2 and seeing many Green Howards soldiers when they were in the Castle Camp garrison in my hometown.
I was fortunate in being son of a WW1 RFC airman who in civvy street was responsible as agent for the owners of the camp, so went with my Dad quite often as he did his work there.
Is there any recorded WW2 history of the GH at Pickering ?

Being a visitor to the Green Howards Museum in November 2014. I was very impressed with the new layout. There was only one thing that gave me concern and that was WHY was there a badge of the new Yorkshire Regiment as the centre piece on the floor? Is this not THE GREEN HOWARDS MUSEUM. or am I missing something.

Hello. The circular design on the floor in the centre of the 'Heart of the Regiment' area features both a Green Howards cap badge and a Yorkshire Regiment cap badge. This is to acknowledge the new regiment that The Green Howards became part of in 2006. We also have a Yorkshire Regiment case in our 'Modern Times' gallery. The floor graphic lists all the Battle Honours as well as showing places around the world that the regiment has been involved.
