- DVETheKNorth West England, United Kingdom624 contributionsA great little museumThe museum had a good mix of displays, information about the area and its history, plus an exhibition of paintings by a local artist. Being a former church, the stained glass windows were lovely. There was a two minute or so video upon entering the building which played on a loop and the volume was way too high. All the time I was in there, even in the gallery I could hear the thing play over and over again. It was distracting while trying to read the information boards about local history. I assume that it would be easy enough to change it to press a button to start the video rather than it playing constantly. In the current energy crisis, it might save money, too. In the upstairs gallery there was a row of buttons to choose different videos, so maybe they could use the same system downstairs? Otherwise, an enjoyable visit.Visited January 2023Travelled soloWritten 22 January 2023
- mabel230Leeds, United Kingdom3 contributionsFantastic. Highly recommend for all age groups including toddlers and teens. The lady who greeted us was so friendly and helpful detailing what was on offer. We were grandma, son, granddaughters 3, 12 and 15. We ALL loved the experience. I would say it cannot be improved upon. Even the little shop was affordable and the toys etc reflective of the 50s. Great few hours well spent.Visited April 2023Travelled with familyWritten 14 April 2023
- Joe W4 contributionsAbsolutely brilliant.Vital to anyone visiting Alnwick. Brilliant people’s museum that provides an insightful yet accessible walk through the history of Alnwick’s people, culture and everyday life. Thoroughly enjoyed the engaging chronology of 10,000 years of the area— and the inclusion of prehistory and archeology was unique— it made for a diverse where there is something for everyone of all ages! The stories how people lived, worked and enjoyed themselves felt very authentic, and the micro-historical approach of the permanent exhibition and the ‘Oot and Aboot’ local history exhibition upstairs made the information feel very relatable. All in all a great experience, and a necessity for anyone visiting Alnwick and keen to learn about its past, present and future! Best of luck for the future, I will be back soon!Visited June 2023Travelled soloWritten 3 June 2023
- Bex_Stew91 contributionsHidden gemFairly small but very interesting museum. Definitely worth a visit if in Alnwick, worth the entrance fee. Plenty of interesting information about the area and really interactive (especially if you do the detective trail and sheep hunt) so the kids really enjoyed it too. Spent a good 90mins here and would recommendVisited June 2023Travelled with familyWritten 10 June 2023
- UKHec414 contributionsAn hour well spent esp if you don’t know the area.Superb small museum. Really well done, informative, well maintained and clean. A lot of the reviews here are from families; we were two middle aged adults and still really enjoyed it. The “oot and aboot” exhibition has left me craving a trip round Coquetdale.Visited June 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 28 June 2023

You go up in a lift to reception. The lady on reception was fantastic, really friendly and full of advice, hints and tips. The museum itself is really nice, full of info about the area if Alnwick. There are numerous interesting artefacts and displays. The upper floor was dedicated to Ladybird books, a real blast from the past. A lovely gentleman talked to us about Topsy and Tim books and where the author lived, which was just down the road from the museum. We spent about two hours here and it's well worth the entrance fee. - Deborah C2 contributionsExceptional museum, high standard throughoutAbsolutely first rate museum. Exceptionally welcoming staff. Every single display was eye catching, well presented and informative. This museum is tucked away, somewhat off the beaten track in Alnwick so easy to miss, but definitely worth a 2 minute detour from the castle gates. Highly recommended.Visited September 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 9 September 2023

- LadyGail62Worthing, United Kingdom111 contributionsSmall but Perfectly FormedWhat a wonderful museum. A bit of everything. Lots to take in. And we were fortunate enough to see the Ladybird book exhibition. A real treat and took me right back to my childhood. The volunteers were very knowledgeable. I promised one of the volunteers, Frances, that I would mention quadratic equations so she knew who wrote the review. The museum has activities for children so they don't get bored. The museum is nicely signposted. We found free parking round in Greenwell Road. Do visit, it is a wonderful antidote to the grandeur of the castle.Visited October 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 6 October 2023
- Olivia CAlloa, United Kingdom9 contributionsA *sort of* hidden gem (it is well signposted!)I had this museum on my list of places to visit but I didn’t think I’d have the time- I’m so glad I did! For £5 it was well worth having a wander round this lovely local museum focusing on the working lives of people living in and around Alnwick over the centuries. I loved the current exhibition on the illustrations of the ladybird books- so nostalgic and very well put together. The lady in the museum was so lovely and welcoming and I was pleased to hear they are planning a new exhibition and so I will have to return for that.Visited October 2023Travelled soloWritten 15 October 2023

Bailiffgate Museum in Alnwick is a fascinating place. Two floors are dedicated to permanent displays and exhibits providing an informed insight to 10000 years of local and regional Northumberland history and way of life.
Visitors of all ages will find something to interest them and a wealth of books are available to buy should you wish to delve further into a specific aspect.
Having only 1 1/2 hours to visit we were fortunate to have volunteer Matthew to show us round and benefit from his enthusiasm and knowledge.
We will definitely visit again when in the area and wish the staff and volunteers every success in their aspiration to eventually relocate to the larger and more central Northumberland Hall in Alnwick.

We visited the museum to see the Ladybird books exhibition and was totally captivated by the displays and the information on the artist’s who illustrated the books.Well worth a visit but you need to be quick as it finishes soon.
The rest of the museum is also well done and captures the history of Alnwick very well.Good exhibits and well written information. The lower ground floor is on the history of coal mining in the area.Unfortunately I am to big to try the pit tunnel.
Thank you Vivien for a very friendly welcome and explanation of what to expect.
