    Beautiful 800 year old castle
The inside of the castle doesn't reopen until 31 March. However, the castle viewed from the outside, is a dominant feature in its elevated position overlooking the River Aln. Forget about it being a filming location for Harry Potter, Downton Abbey, etc. this is quite simply a stunningly beautiful castle that is over 800 years old.

    Fantastic day
What a great place to visit if you get the chance. So much history dating back to the 11th century. It's hard to imagine who's footsteps you are walking in whilst walking around the rooms and corridors. It has also been used for numerous films and TV series over the years. The staff were brilliant. They really went out of their way to help my wife who has limited mobility.

    So much history
We spent 4 hours visiting the castle and thoroughly enjoyed it. Ramparts, towers, state rooms, not to mention the excellent falconry demonstration. It was amazing to hear about the way that Alnwick Castle and the family have been involved in many parts of English and Scottish history, not to mention world history in the form of the American War of Independence. The guides in each of the state rooms all deserve a special mention. All were very personable and very informative. The Fusiliers museum was also well worth a visit in the corner. We also enjoyed a light lunch in the Courtyard Café.

A good day out and worth a visit
We visited during the Easter school holidays. There was lots to do and see at the castle and it was a good day out. My kids made a coat of arms tile which was included in the entry price (I'm used to there being extra charges for things like that!). Staff were friendly, approachable and helpful.

    Fascinating Castle
Alnwick Castle is probably best known now as being one of the film locations for Harry Potter so that’s a great draw for the young folk. When we were there there were lots of family activities, including broomstick riding(!) and it was very busy. Of more interest to the grown ups is the history as the family seat of the Duke of Northumberland, and strolling round the state rooms is really interesting. There are also extensive external areas, battlement walk, museums in some of the towers, a courtyard cafe, gift shop etc. You could easily spend a whole afternoon here, particularly if the weather is good, so well worth a visit

    Great family day out
We enjoyed a great family day out here at Easter 2023. Lots for the kids to do all included in the ticket price - go and get tickets for broomstick flying lessons as soon as you arrive as these get snapped up! Dragon Experience, wand making, magic show and falconry display were all well enjoyed by the kids too. Looking forward to going back!

    A great visit
We spent a good half day exploring the castle and its interesting and colourful history. We did the historical tour and Peter was extremely informative, sharing with the group literally hundreds of years of history in an effortless fashion. Someone who is clearly passionate about his job! Although we didn’t visit with children, there seemed to be plenty of Harry Potter related events taking place to keep the little ones entertained. It’s great to see that the entry money is being spent on maintaining the castle for future generations to enjoy. Well worth a few hours of your time whilst visiting Alnwick.

    Great family day out
Visited with my parents, husband, and 2 year old son whilst on a family holiday. The first thing that I have to say is that all the staff were really lovely, taking the time to listen to and engage with my son as we went round. He really enjoyed the dragon exhibit, I'm not sure that all children would, but he's still talking about it now! The castle is beautiful, and we went on a great guided tour about the filming that's been done there. There were other tours and activities available as well, we enjoyed the jester show. The cafe was really nice, maybe a bit expensive, but great quality. If you book online then your ticket is automatically an annual pass, so we were able to visit twice in the one week. I would definitely go again! There's lots of road parking around. It would be good if the castle tickets also got you into the gardens, which we didn't visit this time, but walking around the outside we could see that it was an attraction in itself and one that I hope to visit in the future!

Great place to spend a few hours.
A very interesting visit with lots to see both inside the castle and in the grounds (and not just where some scenes from Harry Potter were filmed!). Highly recommend taking one of the free tours of the grounds - some very interesting information shared in an amusing and lively way. Good on site cafe with a selection of hot and cold light meals and range of cake, etc. Excellent facility offered for those needing mobility assistance - free loan of motorised scooters to help get around the site, subject to availability.

A tick box to check when in Alnwick.
I dropped by on the way from Vindolandia to Edinburgh. This place was where they shot the Harry Potter broomstick scene from the first movie. I started by walking around the castle on the outside to take in the countryside and the ramparts. Inside, the castle was much like the others before it. It was alright I guess.

I am not a huge Harry Potter fan myself but I would admit this place is a must see if you are a fan of the films. The castle itself from the outside is amazing. Inside is still a family home so no photos are allowed. Totally fine with this. Very ornate. However I would say that the tours that happen around the castle which you can join are confusing. I was unsure which one we had joined until we realised fairly quickly history was not on the agenda but films and tv shows were the main concern. This may be my problem but I think a few others have said the same thing. I feel if you are in the area it’s a must see although I did feel I left without knowing much history of the castle.

Beautiful kept and maintained. Good activities, the broom riding was really good fun for everyone in our party. Disappointed that one of the main rooms was under maintenance but absolutely loved it. Will definitely return again. Dont forget to get your day ticket made a year ticket before you leave to visit as much as you like within a year.

We visited with American friends. One of our party is a wheelchair user. There was a serious lack of ramps and he was forced with two of us helping to climb steps into the building to then use an on site wheelchair rather than his own. This caused considerable pain.
When we visited the cafe there was a large sign asking mobility scooter users to leave their scooters outside if able. What a roundabout way to say you’re unwelcome!!
I appreciate it’s an old building, but we have visited other historical buildings where ramps have been in place and disabled visitors have been treated with the same dignity as other guests.
Very disappointed

Amazing castle, with so much history. Please take the tour about films and tv series made there. It’s a free tour and the tour guide is excellent. Broomstick training completed and successful too.

I visited with friends, one of whom was in a wheelchair being pushed by his partner. Although he found going across the cobbles uncomfortable because of the age of the castle as there weren’t too many flat areas except the grass for the wheelchair we had a wonderful visit. From entering the site all the staff were proactive in letting us know where we could go with the wheelchair. As my friend could walk a little and manage a few steps we did the wonderful state rooms and the staff were immediately on hand to organise wheelchairs at the top of the steps and again on the first floor once he’d stood in the lift to get to it and explaining how to get back down again. The room staff were very knowledgeable and were again proactive in telling the guests about the various things in the rooms were went in to. We enjoyed the visit and had a lovely time watching the broomstick lessons!

The castle is in very good condition and there's a lot of history to learn. There are lots of rooms inside for the public to see and a section of the wall that you can walk along (you can't walk along that much, considering the size of the castle).

Some of the rooms have a decent display, history, information or exhibitions for you to see. There are a lot of stairs! If you want to see everything, you have to be reasonably mobile. Would not recommend for wheelchair users.

You get a fair amount for about twenty quid entry price per adult.
