Paxton House is a fine example of a Palladian House featuring Adam interiors, Chippendale and Trotter furniture and a very large picture gallery. The tour of the house involves booking a time slot for a guided tour which normally takes just over 1hr. Our tour guide Wilma was very approachable and informative and we really enjoyed her tour of this stunning property and the history this building holds. The tour is well routed and at a good pace to appreciate what you are looking at and plenty of explanatory information, oral and written. One of the rooms explains the houses use of slaves in the sugar plantations belonging to the house in Grenada.
All the rooms are well presented ,some house tours you only get to see a small portion of the property but that is not the case at Paxton House. The picture gallery at the end is huge with paintings on loan from the National Galleries of Scotland.
The grounds are like a park and the restored water wheel is well worth a visit but involves a lot of steps.
There was ample parking when we went but might get busy in high season.

Reading online that Jim was a great tour guide we understood why he got the great reviews. We happened to be in the area for a wedding so decided to do a tour. Finding the house and parking are easy. Sadly there is no photography allowed but the collection of Chippendale is beyond belief. Most of the pieces were custom made for the house, a less glamerous style than perhaps one would think of when envisioning Chippendale but so beautiful in the simplicity of the lines. There were teddy bears strategically placed to keep the kids looking around. Also an extensive collection of paintings and an interesting exhibit off of the visitors center on fly fishing. Go down the road a little to see the newly restored Union Bridge.

We loved the Christmas Cracker event this year. So well organised; parking was easy, house was beautifully decorated, stalls well laid out and with space to move around to see everything. Cafe had Christmassy menu with tasty turkey rolls, pigs in blankets and roast potatoes, and with plenty staff on hand the food arrived quickly despite the queue. Special mention to the friendly door staff and wonderful violinist welcoming visitors into the house.
We visit this event every year and this was the best one yet!

Visited paxton house today for Jagart82's kite making craft afternoon.
Had an awesome time, and my wee boy really enjoyed himself. James and Jan are amazing with the kids and their junior jag artists. The opertunites that will open up for these young people will be outstanding with guidance from James and his team.
With that being said, the session was run by Charlotte today (one of the talented junior jag artists) she did a fantastic job, very patient, giving clear instructions and helping the kids when needed. Well done, Charlotte!
Have been coming to paxton regularly over the last 9 years since moving to Berwick, Jagart82 fits right in here, and we look forward to the next arts and craft session.

I was a little apprehensive about our visit as my husband needs to use a wheelchair most of the time and some of the reviews had said it was not accessible. However the staff were great, particularly Carol who did our house tour - she was knowledgeable and entertaining and was very good with my husband who and the wheelchair. The cafe was mostly accessible ( a kind gentleman held the door open) and the food was very nice. We did not attempt to go round the grounds due to the reviews, but my husband managed a short walk with the rollator on the flat tarmac which was a plus. All in all a successful visit.

Lovely country house in a great spot just off the A1. The grounds are extensive with lots to explore including a den building area and playpark as well as pretty riverside walk. They had a Halloween trail on which was £4 per child and adults went free with this activity, good value for money with some funny photo opportunities.
The tearoom was lovely with nice staff and a great selection of homemade cakes and light lunch options as well as a bookcase with kids toys and books. The quiche was delicious. The couple on the table next to us were having afternoon tea and it looked amazing, loads of food!

Ve had booked a stay on the small campsite in the grounds here and decided to do the tour one very rainy afternoon. I’m glad we did as we really enjoyed it . The tour guide Jim was excellent- very friendly , knowledgeable and he kept everyone’s interest ( including some children) throughout the tour - which lasts about an hour. Beautiful house with very interesting history and lots of beautiful furniture and art work . Tea rooms serving lunches, afternoon tea , coffee and cakes also lovely. Highly recommended.

Today we attended the Halloween event at Paxton House. The efforts made from all the staff with the children really was amazing, they made it such an enjoyable day. My two children both said the arts and crafts was the best bit. Was so nice to be part of such a lovely local event.
My little girl absolutely loved the jag art print she won in the Halloween costume contest. She is insisting it needs framed and put up in her room she really is over the moon with it. Keep doing the amazing work you’re all doing.

Beautifully kept house and grounds in a lovely location on the banks of the Tweed. Great example of Neo-Palladian architecture which has been left largely untouched, so lots of historical interest. Amazing collection of historical costumes and Chippendale furniture. Very informative tour telling us lots about the family who owned it, which appealed to both the adults and teens in our family. The adults would have liked more freedom to explore the displays about connections with slaver plantations but the kids were happy that the tour kept us moving along! Very uncrowded location. Lovely cafe in the Stables with good selection of food, and very helpful staff all round. Only downsides were we would have liked to be able to take photographs in the house and we would have liked wider availability of the river cruises.

We ordered 2 of the small festive tray bakes for Christmas. Biscoff & Malteser. They were freshly made and delivered to my door. Even though I ordered the small slabs, they were quiet large. I cut them up and took them to family & friends when we visited over the Christmas period. They tasted amazing and everyone commented on how lovely they were presented and the freshness. I would definitely recommend you try these bakes, Ideal if your having a family/business event and would like some tastly treats. Brilliant service, very quick replies and able to answer any questions I had. They also catered for my sons allergy and he was able to enjoy the treats too. Thank you for our Christmas treats 😊

Dogs are allowed in the gardens if kept on leads and any refuse is removed. We have a dog friendly room attached to the tearoom for you to take shelter and enjoy a meal. Guide dogs are allowed in all areas of the house.

You can cycle into the courtyard and car park but we would advise walking the tracks around the ground as they are gravel tracks and not ideal for bikes.

Wheelchairs do have limited access to the house, they will be able to see the Old Kitchen and the ground floor of the house is available to see via a lift. Unfortunately the first floor is not accessible. The Tearoom and shop are also accessible for wheelchairs.
