About
The Northumberland Coast Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB) is among the finest landscape of the country. It was designated in 1958 and covers 39 miles of coast from Berwick to the Coquet Estuary. Within this stretch of coastline is some of the most dramatic coastal scenery - sweeping sandy beaches, rolling dunes, high rocky cliffs and isolated islands.

There was literally one gift shop open, the rest looked almost dead and derelict. Can't fault the gift shop that was open it stocked a lot of choices and was great, The staff were friendly and helpful. But Seahouses is far from what it used to be. Couldn't find a coffee shop open or even a fish shop that may have been ready to open soon. It used to be full of quaint little gift shops now it's full of newsagents and shops that are closed. The parking was great because there was virtually no one there in the past it's been hard to find parking. Stayed about 30 minutes then left. Very disappointed. If this is how it is mid school holidays I dread to think what it's like in the winter. I was snapped at when I tried to go into what looked like a small shop that seemed to be open light son, door propped open. The woman virtually screeched at me "We're closed, we don't open till 11, come back then" not even a polite comment literally a screech as if I was the dirt on her shoe. I soon walked out and definitely didn't return at 11.

What a fabulous place for the holiday with our granddaughters and 2 labradoodles. Although it was busier than usual, because of Covid there was still plenty of space on the beautiful beaches.
The town was quite crowded as expected but most people were keeping their distance. The local Coop was not very well stocked as we had to use a bit of imagination to sort our meals. We have been coming to Seahouses since 2002 and think it is a wonderful place to holiday

We took a sunset walk on the beach between seahouses & bamburgh. Hardly any people on the stunning sandy beach. We took a walk back through the dunes on the coastal path at twilight and were stunned to see some roe deer there. The views include the farne islands, lindisfarne & bamburgh castle and were jaw-droppingly beautiful

On a three night break in Berwick upon Tweed, we visited the beautiful Northumbria Coast. After stopping off at Banburgh, for two hours or so, we caught the bus to Seahouses, which only took 12mins, getting off at King St. We walked towards the small town centre, where there are shops/restaurants/pubs etc. The harbour area is the place to be, this is where the sightseeing boats take people to visit the Farne Islands, to view the seals and sea birds. Well worth the trip. Make sure to take your camera/binoculars. From Seahouses harbour, you can see in the distance, Bamburgh Castle and Lindisfarne, on a clear day! Our visit here was well worth it. It's an Ideal place for everyone to be.

I have walked from Sunderland to Berwick and I can say that this is some of the best coastal walking in the world. You can do as much, or as little as you want. There are some beautiful towns & villages en route and some great places to stay.
It really is outstanding in its beauty.

What an amazing coastline! The rugged beauty is absolutely stunning! We were lucky that our week exploring the area was blessed with good weather (which definitely helps) but we were amazed by all the subtle differences all the way along the coastline which is literally littered with lighthouses and castles. The landscape and scenery is beautiful, the beaches and dunes are soft and sandy, the attractive villages are full of nice tearooms and restaurants. There are some amazing coastal walks too. Can you tell we enjoyed our holiday?
We will definitely be back!

My partner and I had the privilege of admiring the natural beauty of this coast line before we had to get back onto our coach. I would have liked to have stayed longer; we had already visited Bamburgh Castle, which is roughly a 5/10 minute drive to the coast. It was a cloudy and very windy day, but the scenery made up for the weather. I would love to visit this area again in the summer months.

The coastline in Northumberland is really stunning. It’s a though time has stood still; majestic castles stand on the shoreline; the grasses glow on the sand dunes; beaches are pure white soft sand and apart from Seahouses, there’s not an arcade in sight. . You can walk for miles along the beautiful coastline. Many towns, especially Amble, have good restaurants selling local seafood.

First holiday in Northumberland and what an absolute pleasure to amble along the clean, sandy beaches taking in the views of the boats, lighthouses, seabirds and castles. We collected seashells and explored a few rockpools, the weather was kind and the sea really did look tempting if not a little choppy.
Initially we walked to Bamburgh castle and on another occasion to Dunstanburgh castle, both highly recommended.
I hope to be back soon.

Stunning coastline and beaches, attractive working harbour plus walking and related activities. Pleasantly uncrowded away from the chaotic High St area.
However all the above was spoilt, at least for us as state pensioners , by out of control adult cyclists who treat the roadside pavements as their own and pay scant regard to pedestrians. This was particularly bad on the road out of Seahouses towards Bamburgh and Seahouses beach where errant cyclists were joined by electric cycles &/or scooters which made for a dangerous mix with pedestrians.
The local council needs to address this as a matter of urgency before someone is seriously injured. Until then I'd recommend that elderly visitors avoid the area.

Can you get down on to the beach from Seahouses centre/harbour? is it far?
Written 15 October 2018
It’s a really short walk to the beach & the harbour from Seahouses centre. For the beach simply head on the footpath out of the centre towards Bamburgh and cut down the dunes path to the beach and walk for miles, if you want. 5-10 mins walk max. Or you could walk down the Main Street, grab F&C at Pinnacles and carry on past the Olde Ship Inn & Bamburgh Castle Hotel to sit on the seats overlooking the harbour and enjoy. Or vice versa and call in at the Olde Ship. The harbour is small but very picturesque with easy walking along the pier & maybe check out the RNLI centre. Also boat trips & bookings from the harbour. We often walk the beach from Bamburgh to Seahouses and enjoy F&Cs followed by a Coxon’s waffle cone. Your choice, any combination. There’s also some really good restaurants. Whilst you’re in the area check out the Apple Inn or the Apple Core at Lucker, the Potted Lobster or Mizen Head at Bamburgh or the White Swan at Warenford. Have a great time.

The coastline & the areas designated as outstanding natural beauty are free. Bring a decent pair of boots, a coat and just get out there. The paths are well marked and just go for it. Alnwick Garden tickets online, Boat trips from Seahouses again online search possibly Billy Shields, Bamburgh Castle, all the towns & villages are free. Check out Alnmouth, Holy Island, Craster, Dunstanburgh, Newton by the Sea, Longhoughton sands. Warkworth, Amble etc or head inland a bit. Northumberland is beautiful & varied however you want it & there’s some amazing cafes & restaurants if that’s your thing. Explore & enjoy.

Apart from the farne islands can you see puffins anywhere else in the seahouses area.

I don’t think so they nest on the farnes

Hello, I want to find a great (and fairly quiet) campsite in Northumberland (the more dramatic the views, the better). Never been to that part of the country so all recommendations welcome! Near a dog-friendly pub would be a bonus but definately easy access to cliff/coastal walks. I want to avoid the sort of sites with clubhouses/entertainment provided. Thank you in advance to anyone who can point me in the right direction :) Kelly

Beadnall bay - family stayed there with two dogs
Written 30 January 2017
Hi all
I'm really struggling to decide whether to stay at the Victoria Hotel in Bamburgh, or The Castle Inn in Seahouses. This is our first trip to Northumberland, so I don't know very much about either location. We will be taking a dog with us, so need to be near a beach. I'm also taking a husband, so need to be near a few pubs too! Please can anyone recommend which location/hotel would be better.
Huge thanks!
