About
Walk in the footsteps of the Ice Age hunter and enter a world of fire and flint. Discover a legacy etched in stone with cave art 10,000 years older than the pyramids, and medieval Witch Marks as a reminder of more superstitious times. Explore life on the edge of the Ice Age world. Creswell Crags features the only authenticated Ice Age cave art in Britain. Stone tools and remains of animals found in the caves by archaeologists provide evidence for a fascinating story of life during the last Ice Age between 50,000 and 10,000 years ago. Robin Hood Cave has more apotropaic Witch Marks than anywhere else in the UK. The unique archaeology, geology, wildlife and fauna have resulted in Creswell Crags being one of the most protected sites in the UK. The beautiful natural landscape is also popular with walkers and boasts a variety of rare species. Visit the museum or book a cave tour. See website for details.

- VikinglongboatDerby, United Kingdom140 contributionsA great find.An amazing place and such a pleasure to walk around the site. Plenty of parking (pay and display - Blue Badge holders are free), plenty of clean toilets in the visitors centre. Gift shop, superb exhibition well worth visiting at £3 each (entrance to the site without exhibition is free). Lovely small cafe and gift shop. Cave tours are optional and cost extra. The only negatives were the atrocious amount of discarded litter and bottles etc inside some of the caves. Need checking and cleaning out regular. Also the info boards / concrete slabs outside some of the caves and on the cave doors very dirty and would benefit from a clean. Also graffiti on some of the cave metal doors which is a shame.Visited February 2023Written 6 February 2023
- Teacake_TasterChesterfield, United Kingdom1,053 contributionsSurprisingly goodWasn’t sure what to expect but it was a good trip out. You have to pay to park which makes sense as there is no charge to get in apart from the ‘museum’ part. We didn’t visit the caves but after spending time in the visitor centre we had a great walk around the lake, looking in a few caves and reading the signs. Couldn’t believe there were hippos in Derbyshire! Lunch was pretty basic but satisfied us all. Nice little shop. Will go again for a cave trip and perhaps walk further afield. We went over to the Harley Gallery but they were all shut on a Monday apart from the Farm Shop and Garden Centre.Visited February 2023Travelled with familyWritten 16 February 2023
- Rambling R7 contributionsNot value for moneyCar Parking is £4 for 3 hours or £6 all day - no other options. Cave tours are £14 per cave system so I did not book a cave tour. Just to walk round the lake and see the grilled off cave entrances took about an hour and, for me, was pretty under whelming. I appreciate it is a Charity but the cost of the car park was not worth it. Far nicer places to go for the money -Visited July 2023Written 12 July 2023
- KellyLS144Nottingham, United Kingdom23 contributionsDisappointing and uneducational tourAs an archaeologist I had visited about 6 years ago as part of my university degree and enjoyed myself - however today was disappointing! Firstly the service at the cafe was very poor. 3 young girls serving who didn’t seem to really know what they were doing and were repeatedly getting orders wrong. The queue was huge. There were also no vegan options (they hadn’t made the vegan flatbread and weren’t going to either) and the vegetarian option was only a cheese and onion sandwich (and I’m allergic to onion…) so not a great start nor very inclusive. We did the Ice Age tour as the cave art tour was full. Honestly I have to ask myself, what did I actually learn? Nothing! Sorry - the tour guide was friendly (the constant dad jokes was cringeworthy though when only a couple of people had kids), but I have to say I learnt nothing. We went in one cave and that was it, and most of the discussion was about how cold it was (and trying to make some grumpy kids laugh with jokes…). I was really disappointed as there was little educational value. There is so much more that can be done with the tours and really educate people! Finally I was perturbed by the ‘witch mark tour’ (not even witch marks, by the way). Stop cashing in on gimmicks- you have a stunning historical site and there is no need to do that.Firstly thanks for leaving a review. Our tours vary and our Life in the Ice Age tour is clearly marketed as a family family introduction to Life in the Ice Age. As an Archaeologist, we're sure you'll agree that prehistory should be accessible to everyone and not solely for those 'in the know'. The overwhelming majority of visitors who take our tours are extremely positive, so we're sorry you learnt nothing, but perhaps taking an alternative tour would have helped to broaden your knowledge. Perhaps, a Witch Marks tour would be appropriate, because as you say they're not real and we're cashing in, then you may find that you do learn something on that tour, which indeed will show you that apotropaic marks are in fact real, and that we have A LOT of them in our caves. As for the cafe, we'll pass on your feedback. Our kitchen is very small and our team work wonders to ensure everyone has a great experience. If you visited over the summer holiday period we've experienced an exceptionally high demand for all our food and drink items, and because our vegan food is extremely popular, we sometimes sell out of it. Our site is stunning, yes, but it's also run by a charity that needs to try and raise funds in every area of its operations to keep the doors open and to ensure our valuable prehistory is available for everyone to enjoy. Thank you for your visit, and thank you for your support.Written 31 August 2023This response is the subjective opinion of the management representative and not of Tripadvisor LLC.Visited August 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 29 August 2023
- KazLeicestershire, United Kingdom316 contributionsWorth a visitWe were staying in the area and saw a leaflet on this place, we are so pleased we visited. The children enjoyed walking round the lake and going up the steps looking in different caves. After walking round the lake follow the signs to outdoor classroom walk through towards toilets and there is a room where you can have a machine take your picture then you can buy these in visitors centre and they put pictures in keyrings, fridge magnets, snow globes or photo and all very reasonably priced. We loved our trip here and car park was 4 pound for 3 hours , We also had a drink in the cafe and all the staff were lovely especially in visitor centre where the lady was telling us about the digs they have been doing, it was really interesting.Visited October 2023Travelled with familyWritten 20 October 2023
- Julie S11 contributionsCreswell CragsWe booked the Ice Age Tour and our tour guide was energised and engaging. She was very knowledgeable and considerate to those who aren't too keen on spiders! She kept both kids and adults engaged throughout, which is a triumph! We were able to hold some artifacts and learn all about them. There's a nice little cafe with friendly staff and offer blue light discount . Dogs are allowed outside but unfortunately not in. The gift shop is well stocked with interesting and relevant items to purchase. The museum is small and sparse. Thankfully we had been on the tour before going in, so we had already learnt about the artifacts on display. Had we visited this first, we would have been extremely disappointed. We was so impressed with our tour, we'll be booking another! Overall, good value for money and there is discount offered at other venues when you buy a ticket.Visited November 2023Travelled with familyWritten 2 November 2023
- Jaygee023 contributionsDisappointedI went with my daughter who is 31. We found there was too much showing of “old” tools and not enough talking about the caves themselves. I was unable to join the group further in the cave as I would not have been able to stoop for any length of time so I did not get the experience and feel strongly that this should be made clear for those like me who are older and not as mobile therefore I did not think £14 was worth it in my case. I much preferred the outside walks along the rocks which was free.Thank you for taking the time to post a review. We're sorry your visit didn't meet your expectations. You can imagine my disappointment when we saw 3 Krampus yet in the photo shot there was about 9 !!! Feel robbed as we were the last tour. I could have stood and looked at them for free in Whitby, advertised story telling just a little on the history of witch trial, not worth the moneyVisited November 2023Travelled with friendsWritten 20 November 2023

Took my 9yr old and his grandad and had a great time here. Great place to get outdoor air, some in cave exploration and excellent tour info. Simon ran ours and had real passion and knowledge, lasted around 1.5 hours so bear that in mind and a tunnel in the cave we saw. Caves not huge but the story telling and information beat pretty much all other cave experiences we have done and we've done a bunch. Building and museum very nice, clean and modern too. Will return in the summer too as tickets last 12 months. GJ.

I had an amazing afternoon with my son and grandson [9] at Creswell Crags.
Simon our guide brought history to life in an amazing way; his enthusiasm and knowledge made it an experience we will not forget. I would recommend it for a family day out.
We intend to return next year.

My daughter and I had a fab time this morning making wands with Daisy and Tate. I had no idea how my 10 year old would get on with using a knife to carve but she did so well under Daisy's expert guidance and we are so impressed with our wands, I've ordered a knife so we can carry on using our new skills!

We visited Creswell Crags for the first time today, 2 adults, 2 children (8 and 5) and paid for the ice age cave tour. It was fantastic! Our tour guide, Simon, was very knowledgable and engaging, making the tour relevant to all of us. We got to go into the caves, equipped with hard hats and torches, he explained how life changed through the past 200,000 years and the kids got to hold examples of artefacts that show what life was like.
The walk around the gorge was lovely and well sign posted. The visitors centre was very nice, with a small, free, interactive display about the site. We enjoyed a visit to the cafe and the shop.
A brilliant half day out, plenty to see and well worth paying extra for the guided tour. We will visit again and join a different tour in the future!

We visited Creswell Crags today to take part in the Wand making session. It was absolutely amazing and the girls were not disappointed!
The girls loved every part of the session. Daisy and Kate were really engaging and exceptionally knowledgeable!
The room which the activity took place was super, plenty of room for Wand making and spell making!
The cafe was equally as good! Really yummy cakes and coffee within a beautiful space! The staff were also lovely!
We would highly recommend going to any activity that Creswell Crags put on.
Thank you again Daisy and Kate for a fun afternoon! X

Hi. Want to visit the site and go on a tour hopefully----my wife has a temporary problem if she has to walk too fast or on extremely uneven surfaces-----( 5 months into recovery from a broken leg). Does this exclude her? ( we hope not as pre-history is our interest). Thanks Dave

Hi there, yes there is a place to lock up bikes - it's at the far end of the visitor centre from the main entrance, close to the café terrace. Hope to see you soon!

Caves are only accessible on cave tours. You get a helmet to protect your head against the rock but in most places you can stand up straight no problem.

As others have answered, you have to pay for the caves. We live about 15 miles away, and first went for a walk, coffee and museum visit. This gave us the impression that we wanted to visit the caves as well, so we returned some weeks later (with friends) to visit the caves, and it was well worth it.

Can we visit both caves for £7.50 or is there a slightly higher charge for visiting both? They both look so interesting, we are having difficulty choosing just one!

It depends on the season and the weather conditions - not all caves are accessible, but those that are, are only open when the conditions are right. If more than one is open, the guides will take you in.

they would be ok getting around but might be a little bored, - to get inside the caves you need to pay for a tour. I'd recommend the Life in the Ice ae if you're with children as this is more interactive. It lasts an hour or so... There is a picnic area and it is a lovely spot, If you live within an hours drive its a great couple of hours out.
(ps -I don't have grandkids)
