- Ms Boba FettEast Midlands, United Kingdom88 contributionsLightopia - bit boring unfortunatelyWent to Alton Towers for Lightopia, had a few mulled wines first in the Christmas market area which is pleasant. I’m gluten free so only managed a portion of £5 chips from one of the stalls as there wasnt anything else. I didn’t think much of Lightopia tbh, once you’d seen a couple of them you’d seen them all. Think they could do more for £20 pp really. I definitely wouldn’t return for this personally.Hi there boba_fettish_1! Thank you for taking the time to leave your review. - orionuk2016London, United Kingdom195 contributionsWash outFor once its going to be a pretty negative review for Alton. I'm a platinum pass holder and we have always had a great time here. And I know we will have many more. Sadly, today will be memorable for the wrong reasons. Firstly (this bit is my fault) I didn't read the small print saying none of the big rides are open. Perhaps the resort could highlight that. The kids are older now so the rides that are left are pretty boring. What is open will not fill a day. Secondly the weather really took away the experience. That is obviously no fault of the resort but with very few sheltered and warm areas we are left warming ourselves by hugging overpriced hot chocolate under any canopy we can huddle under. The lightopia trail is decent. Some very pretty displays but I'm not sure it was worth the whole day or price just for a half hour walk in the rain. I will always recommend the resort during main season but will not return for Xmas againHi there orionuk2016! - santana6 contributionsHmmm dystopian lightopia…Lightopia, A family get together for Christmas, the children under 4 years of old loved it, although the adults and children over 12 years of old noticed that after the first 10 minutes the lights were continually repeated in the circuit. Some members wished To go to the toilet on the round course which takes approximately an hour. There were no facilities to be found until the final 5 minutes of the round, this is where the actual great spectacle takes place, a laser show over the river, where you can also notice ducks on ice. To be honest, the final light show and the Christmas market is sufficient on a cold day, although, definitely over priced. For family with children, spend a penny before the circuit. Take your own marshmallows to roast and park nearer to the main park entrance as if you only pay for Lightopia and have not booked the Roller restaurant or the hotel, there is no bus or monoRail running which means this entails a 40 minute walk in the freezing cold. If bettered we may return for an experience, although looking back we would probably agree it is dystopia, nothing which raises the Christmas Spirit. Also the illumination statues on a closer look are moldy and not conditioned to a 4 year stint of damp British weather….we think it could be bettered Alton Towers.Hi there 690narae! - Andy S8 contributionsVery underwhelmingMassive disappointment! Visited for lightopia, thought as a private company would have been an amazing experience but it wasn't. Lots of lit up animals but very few of them relative to christmas, there is one good bit, the light display if the lake but unfortunately the only piece that attracts attention. Suggest they send the designers to wollaton Park then redesign for next year. Won't be back to this.Hi there P1344PZandys! Thank you for taking the time to leave your feedback. - Leanne HBollington, United Kingdom175 contributionsDreadful Lightopia AVOIDAs a family we love Alton Towers, but were incredibly disappointed by Lightopia. It was absolutely dreadful and a complete waste of money! The lit up inflatable creatures are not at all festive - halloween characters? Jungle animals? Tacky anime style cartoon creations? The only festive bit was the light projection over the lake but we thought this was also very poor for a major UK theme park and a considerable entry price. The installations themselves were dubious, unseasonal, grubby and held together with gaffa tape. Very little interactive opportunities and the only people I saw enjoying it were the under 5s although this is not advertised as an attraction solely for young children. By the end we were laughing at how dreadful it was but really appalled at how badly wrong Alton Towers have got this. Much nicer and more christmassy attractions out there. Avoid Avoid Avoid!Hi there Leanne! Thank you for taking the time to leave your review and feedback. It is disappointing to hear that you did not enjoy your stay with us this year! - BenBolton, United Kingdom3 contributionsHow can we cheer the staff upThe kids (3 & 4) loved the Octonauts and go Jetters ride so much they were brilliant and worth the trip. Most others were a bit rubbish and met with cries of “this one’s rubbish”. It was the near suicidal staff manning the rides that really didn’t help the experience. The breaking down of the rides after lengthy queues. The awful food and “sorry we’ve run out of everything except dry pasta”. The hotel which smelled of stinky nappies and stale water upon the approach. The kids loved the octonauts room. All in all £500 not well spent but hey nothing ventured nothing gained. 🥸Hi there Benappease! - Kevin dott2 contributionsSanta sleepover and lightopiaSanta sleepover at splashlanding Hotel was a joke this year, we thought we would treat the whole family this year and spents lots of money booking it as we always go every year just my family. Everything was fine apart from the uncooked food at the evening meal and breakfast with no drinks for the kids. Every year we come alton towers the kids received a notebook and pen along with sweets but this year nothing was put out for them. Also the rooms were the last rooms at the end of the corridor we had push a wheelchair very disappointed. Only thing that was great was Santa visit for kids , Lightopia we thought was fine as it was included but I wouldn’t have paid extra for it. There was no cut off point if u were tired or needing a toilet u had to carry on till the end and then go toilet also the ground wasn't flat for a pushchair or wheelchair. Think we won't bother staying at alton towers again maybe try something different. Very disappointed with everything this year.Hi there Kevdott! - Karen D2 contributionsBit of a let downIn 2021 we stayed at Alton Towers for a festive break, after several cancellations due to Covid. We stayed in a Moon Voyage room, it overlooked the gardens and was a quiet peaceful room. In the evening we attended Litopia and were very impressed with both the scale and quality of the light show. Fast forward to 2022. We thought we'd do the same again, same type of room and Litopia in the evening. Sadly the past twelve months have not been kind to the Alton Towers hotel. This time the room we stayed in was tired and shabby and overlooked the car park. It was also very noisy. We looked forward to Litopia, presuming that it would be a different light show. It was but only because they had put the same installations in different positions and reduced the number by at least 30%. Same old displays but this year with obvious repairs to them, they looked tatty and lacklustre. Given the very high cost of these festive breaks and how little you actually get for your money (Litopia was extra) we will not be repeating the experience again. Merlin seem to have one goal - to screw as much money from gullible parents as possible with as little effort as possible. Not impressed.Hi there karendO2173IZ! We had a wonderful visit to alton towers for the santa sleepover, we were lucky and there was snow which made it absolutely magical.
The site was easy to access, despite the snow
But the carpark was difficult to maneuvere around and we ended up in a reserved spot which we couldn't get out of, the lady on reception said it was not a problem.
Buses to the main entrance were frequent and we jumped straight on.
Lots of rides not open or opened late due to snow and we found the queues to be 30 mins plus, usually I have a priority pass as son has autism, but I was advised on the phone that I wouldn't need it, I popped into guest services and explained and they sorted it there and then so was pleased with that.
We went to the santa in mutiny bay, the booking was 1.30pm but the queue was huge and we couldn't use the priority pass, we queued for about 40 mins by which time my son was miserable and refused to smile. I didn't think the queuing and then the walk into santas Lodge that great, but the Santa was really good. This was probably the worst part of the day.
We got to the alton towers hotel and room wasn't ready at 2.20pm, explained son is autistic and was told it wouldn't be ready early and nothing could be done even though he was having a melt down, he was very cold and damp. At 3pm still hadn't had a text, went to reception again, explained to a different chap who said our room wasn't ready, so he would swap us to a room that was ready, I didn't catch his name but he was fantastic and understanding. I got the impression he would have sorted us out earlier, most of the staff have a disney attitude where nothing is too much of an ask.
I realise I'm asking for special treatment by wanting the room early and wanting to skip the queue for santa, but unless you have a child with autism you won't understand the lengths that we need to go to, to ensure that he enjoys things but doesn't get overwhelmed or over stimulated which heads into major meltdown. So I just need places to accommodate his needs without hassle.
We had an Arctic explorers room which was an amazing theme.
We had dinner in the secret garden restaurant which was a bit strange, firstly nobody knew the flavour of the soup, and everytime I asked I was told that they would ask the chef, but no one would return, the soup was just dregs anyway and I asked if more soup was coming and I was again told that they didn't know and would find out.. eventually I did get some soup.
On the carvery, they had 1 single person rationing the potatoes, carrots, parsnips and brussels sprouts. So the 2 people serving meat were just stood there waiting for the bottleneck to clear before they could serve, it took a very long time. But we were allowed to help our selves to stuffing, Yorkshire puddings and pigs in blankets. It was very bizarre, even the staff serving the meat found it all strange. The food was not great.
Breakfast was OK, there were no veggie sausages and tbe hot food was pretty cold.
Panto was really good and professional, it was a relaxed performance with kids moving around freely and nobody minded.
I was expecting a light walk and a market which were not there, i was sure that it was advertised when i booked in september. We didn't manage to do everything that was open at the resort anyway, and the snow made it and lots of time was spent playing.
The swimming looked amazing, unfortunately we didn't get to do it as my son was exhausted and was struggling on the 2nd day.
We went on a Sunday, and I think it was good value for money and was about £350, saturdays are a lot more expensive. It was absolutely worth it for us and we would return.

We went for the Christmas event, it’s not a Christmas event! We are annual pass holders and love this place but whoever organised this years Christmas event really needs to consider new employment. There’s no Christmas market, literally one food stall overall and a marshmallow pit that wasn’t even lit. previous years there has been a great atmosphere with lots of drink and food booths, stage shows, staff dressed up and a lovely event overall. It was actually snowing on the day we visited which if that doesn’t help make it feel like Christmas I don’t know what can, we literally visited for 1 hour and left, unfortunately the rides wasn’t open due to the cold conditions but I have not factored that into my review as alton towers can’t be held responsible for the weather and I understand the safety concerns. Seriously Alton towers bring back the Christmas event from several years past, this was so bad we are even considering not renewing annual passes as this was purely a money making event with little enjoyment for all! The guest services que can agree!

My Wife, Daughter and I booked the Santa Sleepover, with a one night stay at Splash Landings Hotel. On arrival Staff were very helpful in explaining where the shuttle was for Santa’s Grotto. The buses ran regularly and staff were there to greet us when we got off, as well as talk through the tickets required for our booked experiences. Unfortunately the weather meant that a lot of rides were not functioning, however we kept busy with shows and the sealife centre. There were some food stalls dotted about, however my one grip would be to make Mutiny bay a little bit more populated with more of a market. There was marshmallow roasting and hot chocolate available as well as hot food, so not a massive gripe. The Santa’s Grotto experience was lovely, with a professional photo taken for us and available for purchase afterwards. The Pantomime was also great, and a good hour of entertainment before dinner. The activities after dinner for the kids were good for kids upto about the age of 8 or 9 but after that i’d say limited. Bar prices were very expensive - £10.00 for a cocktail out of a machine. The check in experience was fast, with a text and email sent to your phone when the room was available. The only thing that let this down was that if you booked a late checkout the machine failed to encode your card with this detail so we returned to our room on the second day to find our card not working. Overall the stay was great, rooms were clean and adequate and of course the waterpark was excellent. We were lucky enough to have snow, which we thought would affect staffing due to roads being inaccessible but all paths and roads of the theme park were clearer than the Motorways! Well Done Alton Towers.

Disappointing Santa Sleep over…. we came last year and enjoyed the Christmas market, entertainment & lightopia this year however was such a let down. We got into the park which is decorated beautifully but had zero Christmas magic! The Santa visit was wonderful but that’s where it ended so we took the children back to the hotel on the ‘candy cane’ bus….. our driver was miserable and drove like a lunatic.
I had booked dinner weeks in advance they couldn’t accommodate us at the Secret Garden so we were booked in at Splash landing buffet restaurant which was rubbish , a bland christmas dinner, so then we went back to the Alton Towers for the evening entertainment which was good the kids had a brilliant time, and we all enjoyed swimming the next day.
I don’t think I would book again for Christmas, it just didn’t have a festive feeling and it’s not cheap, we’ve done it the last few years but think we will be looking for a new venue next year for our Santa visit !

Hi there,
Thanks for leaving a review with us.
We're incredibly disheartened to hear about your time with us.
Our Santa's Sleepover event is always designed with the intentions of providing memorable festive fun for the whole family, so its disappointing to hear your experience was quite the opposite.
We apologise that the offering compared to previous years felt lacklustre. As years go by, our events may change or develop in ways that do not align with previous years. We apologise that changes made to the event for our 2023 season proved to be disappointing for yourselves in comparison to previous visits.
We always aim to provide a fantastical food offering at a reasonable price, so apologise this wasn't the case when you were with us. We are however really glad to hear you had such a fantastic time watching our entertainment and splashing about in the Waterpark!
Please rest assured we take onboard all feedback from our guests, so we can develop and improve our events year upon year. Some of the instances you've mentioned such as the bus journey and reservation for Secret Garden are something we may need some more details on. If there is anything regarding your stay with us that you'd like to discuss more directly and in detail, please don't hesitate to email us at gs.feedback@alton-towers.com .

We stayed as a family for the Santa sleepover event this weekend. The park was lovely; clean, tidy, really nicely decorated, staff were fantastic some really good performers such as the elves, Santa and the guy who did the hey duggy show. Food was much improved from when we stayed last year (we ate in the crooked spoon). The woodland lodges are lovely and we’ve stopped in them a few times now. Swimming was good! Kids all enjoyed themselves. We will be returning again next year 🎅😆🌲💕

We have been twice now with my little sister and she has went another time she loves Alton towers the only big rollercoasters she’ll go on is wicker man and 13 that’s ok we had another child who didn’t enjoy the kids are 11 and 10 and the 10 old kept begging to go on smiler so we went on that first the staff are very accommodating as all the rides my sister doesn’t want to go on they let her wait with them now for the other child we think the smiler was a big put off she was pretending to feel sick and have a sore stomach to not go on rides she loved the Mutian bae tea cup things run away mine train wicker man river rapids and all of David Williams land but that WAS NOT Alton towers fault it was disappointing how oblivion was shut for our full visit and the wicker man was shut all the first day and majority of the second one when we were on it the ride got stuck just before the fame at the very end now the 10 year old child didn’t really care but the 11 year old one got into a big panic and before our cart was about to move we heard another cart coming luckily everyone got out safe though I think Alton towers shouldn’t put people on rides if there going to get stick we also really enjoyed the haribo trick or treating now anyone over the age of 4 can get into the scare maze which is not right we took our 10 and 11 year old in and they cried from start to end now I wouldn’t take in child in under the age of 14 or 15 we will definitely be back with my sister but we will not bring the other child back !

Hi there Julie,
Thanks so much for taking the time to leave a review with us.
We're so pleased to hear you had such a fantastic time with us on the whole. We aim to provide fantastical fun for everyone, so its amazing to hear you and the family had such a fantastic time.
We apologise that you experienced some temporary stoppages and closures during your time with us, and would like to assure you that we aim to keep these to a minimum at all times. By the sounds of it, the stoppage on Wicker Man was part of the rides operations, where trains are required to stop before entering the station if another is already in there, so nothing to worry about!
Sorry to hear that Trick or Treat town caused upset with the young ones. We will ensure that we pass this feedback on to ensure that any possible changes can be made to the experience for it to be more age approrpriate.
We can't wait to welcome you again for more fantastical fun in the future,
Very best wishes,
Lew

We visited for Mardi Gras in May and our 2 year old loved CBeebies land/we were so impressed with Alton Towers that we couldn’t wait to book for Christmas when we saw videos of last year’s Santa Sleepover. I have to say though we left feeling like a bit of Christmas magic was missing.
There were definitely positives of our trip. Our son loved CBeebies land, our accommodation in the Enchanted Village was amazing, food in the Crooked Spoon was lovely and swimming was a definite highlight for the kids. The Santa’s grotto was perfect - a lovely experience for the little ones, Santa was fab and the gift they received was lovely.
In terms of Christmas fun, the lack of market and light show compared to previous years made it feel very lackluster. I really don’t think a bit of Christmas entertainment in the hotels and a pantomime matches the activities were available in previous years. We didn’t really get that Christmassy feel walking round the park at all and there wasn’t anywhere available for some nice seasonal food or drinks which I definitely expected.
This would’ve been fine if the rest of what was open was open properly. The Eastern Express food court (one of about three options of food) was missing menu options, the waffle stand had no waffles or hot drinks (?), the coffee shop had none of the seasonal Costa drinks available that were advertised. There was a good few hours of the day where CBeebies land had half of the rides shut. I understand that technical faults happen but it very much felt as though it was because they were setting them up (at one point they were clearing leaves out of the in the night garden boats, could this not have been done before it opened at some point?) - yes we were there on the first day of reopening but why should those children have a lesser experience? Having a one and two year old with us meant that these rides being closed for much of the day combined with a lack of Christmas market/lightopia etc left us with nothing much to do. We also only saw one character outside of the shows - it would’ve been a nice touch for there to be some more characters wandering round considering the rides kept closing and it was the only part of the park fully open.
I appreciate not everything being open in the winter compared to during peak season but even the things that were weren’t open properly. We also have one of the refillable cups that we paid for last time under the premise that it would save us money at every visit and the kiosks to refill this were also all unavailable so I definitely won’t recommend purchasing one of those to anyone else as we still ended up wasting money on overpriced bottles of pop and water.
Luckily the kids were oblivious to what could have been but we expected a magical Christmas/CBeebies experience and everything just felt very half hearted and like Alton towers couldn’t really be bothered to entertain us yet. Our son loves it there but I definitely won’t be booking the Christmas experience again.

Hi there Ellie,
Thank you for taking the time to leave a review with us.
We're incredibly glad to hear that experiences with us previously have met fantastical expectations, however we're disheartened that your Christmas visit was comparatively a disappointment. We're pleased to hear that the overall stay in terms of the accommodation, food, and our fantastical Waterpark made the visit worthwhile, and hope that they proved a highlight of the trip.
In regards to our Coke Freestyle outlets, these are ordinarily only available during our main theme park season, running from March to Early November. We apologise that this was not communicated at the time of purchase.
We always set out to make the meeting with the big man himself the highlight of our guests' visits, so i'm really pleased to hear that the visit to Santa during his time with us proved to be as amazing as we set out to make it.
Prior to booking, we aim to convey the full offering of our events as clear as possible, detailing the activates and attractions which are included as part of the price. With that in mind however, I can appreciate entirely that based on previous years you would have expected the offering to remain fairly similar, and may therefore have been disappointed by the event this year.
We apologise for the temporary stoppages or closures you experienced with us. Whilst these can occur for a number of reasons, more often than not out of our control, we do entirely appreciate how this would be disappointing for our guests and apologise that this was a prevalent issue during your time with us.
We're glad to hear that the young ones in the group had a fantastical time, but apologise that this wasn't reflected for all the members of your group and you left us feeling deflated. This absolutely isn't the way we want any of our guests to feel by the end of their visit to us, and hope that you would still consider visiting us during our main operating season.
We're keen to discuss any feedback you may have in detail, to ensure that we can improve the offering year upon year. If there's anything that you would like to discuss further please don't hesitate to contact us via our email gs.feedback@alton-towers.com
All the best,
Lew

Overall lovely day. We visited with our 2 year old and so the fact that only limited areas of the park were open wasn’t an issue for us as we mainly wanted to experience CBeebies Land.
Very quiet which was ideal as we were able to get on all of the rides with minimal waiting times; we also took a walk over to the Gangster Granny ride and carousel and we were easily able to get on these and also visited the mini Sealife walk through.
The only shortfalls we found were there was an extremely limited choice of food outlets - whilst lots of snacks available, not much at all in the way of sit down places to eat. The ‘Corner Coffee’ was advertising lots of seasonal drinks but had none of these in stock - no syrups, whipped cream etc. and was very disappointing. The barista just kept telling us ‘we don’t have that’ which seemed a bit ill prepared for opening day. We had a pizza and 2 hot drinks in the CBeebies Lunchbox cafe and this was very expensive for what you actually got, although we do expect this in a theme park to some degree. However, we would have liked to have seen some more seasonal food on offer - hot dogs, pork baps, mulled drinks which would have really added to it being a Christmas event.
There is no light trail this year as Lightopia has ‘gone bust’ and whilst there are Christmas decorations, trees, lights and staff dressed up for Christmas, overall it felt like something was missing. There was also no Christmas market this year. A member of staff working on the Gangster Granny ride even told us that there was less than 1000 people in the park that day because the light trail and Christmas market was missing ‘no one wants to come!’
Overall we were able to take our son on all of the rides in CBeebies land which was the purpose of the visit, however I would say that the magic is definitely missing from Alton Towers’ Christmas event this year.

Really enjoyed, my first time here and i was impressed. Used disability priority queuing and the system was easy, fair and to a good standard. Good drinks and food, fun arcade games. Large park, lots to do. Difficult to travel to and leave from as not near any train stations and it’s a difficult drive to the park. Friendly staff and an enjoyable day out.

Hi
As only one maze at scarfest is different this year, we only want to do that one (not the new escape one though). Can you purchase a ticket for one maze as we don’t want to go to all four but there is only an option to buy a ticket that covers all four?
Thanks

Yes you can, they are £9 per maze and you can buy the tickets in the app under the ‘shop’ tab.

Is Alton Towers likely to be opened the last week of March 2024? My daughter is on holidays from school in Ireland so want to go this week.
I really want to book the trip as a surprise Christmas present for her, but am hesitant to book flights/accommodation in case the park won't be opened. Phoned park but they can't tell me if it will or not.

The park is due to reopen from 16th March 2024, so you will be fine for last week of March.

Are normal day passes and scarefest tickets the same (without booking the mazes or dungeons). Can you stay the whole day?

Is it self scan upon entry now? I am buying discounted tickets through student beans which says I need to show ID. How would I verify this please.

Yes it’s self scan.
Hi there, I am going with a group of friends and we were thinking of purchasing fast track tickets online. We were going to share the ultimate fast track pass at £130 because it looks like it can be shared. Can anyone confirm this or not?

Platinum fastrack can’t be shared as it requires one user to wear a wristband.
is it ok if my 10 year old goes on all rides in alton tower.
including with a 16 year old and ill be watching any help?

Can you still purchase a parking token on site from a desk or machine or is it done via the app thanks

Best way is to do it via the app, but you can also get a ticket from the ticket booths or the Box Office on Towers St but there will likely be a queue.
