About
Step back in time and experience life in an intact Norman motte and bailey castle. Explore Tudor and Stuart chambers, Victorian reception rooms and the magnificent late Medieval Great Hall. Discover our new interactive Anglo-Saxon exhibition which tells of the history of Mercia and includes a mead hall and items from the Staffordshire Hoard. To really bring history to life, we have a brand new Augmented Reality trail around the castle. It can be downloaded from the app store for free - Tamworth AR Explorer. Tamworth Castle promises a brilliant day out for all the family. There is plenty to see and even more to do with hands on displays and costumes. The Castle Keep is set in extensive pleasure grounds in the centre of Tamworth's historic market town. Over the centuries the Castle has welcomed royal visitors, key figures in history and nobility. Wonderfully preserved castle with excellent descriptions and displays throughout
Such a well preserved castle. It is great for kids with lots is interactive activities and costumes to try on. The rooms have been beautifully furnished with periods pieces from the Victoria and Albert museum. The views of the surrounding area from the top of the tower is spectacular.

So much packed into this historical wonder.
I am interested in old 'English' history so we did a day trip to visit the castle, home to the Lady of Mercia. The castle is very family friendly with lots to do. I would have liked to have spent longer there. You can see the different eras from Norman, Saxon, Tudor to Victorian parts of the castle. The castle is in good repair. Different rooms set out as they would have been. Information boards and interactive games were great for the children. There were many games for the children to play as they went around plus dressing up areas. There are lots of things on loan from other museums to give the castle atmosphere. Some of the Staffordshire hoard is on loan here too which is fascinating to see. Knowledgeable and friendly staff. We didn't have time to explore the gardens but they looked lovely.
Thank you for taking the time to leave us a review - we will pass your comments on to the staff. Hopefully we will see you again soon.

Got a couple of hours to kill in Tamworth
Smaller castle that's packed full of history. The entry fee is just about earned and there's plenty of entertainment for children along the way. The story of the grounds is well told and it's fairly easy to navigate

    Extensive: interesting
This is a classic motte and bailey castle: its structure is pretty clear still. The main keep building is quite large and substantially intact. There are good displays of artifacts; decent attempts at providing children's activities and a fair measure of interpretation. Unfortunately some of the interpretation is too hard to read due to combinations of weak lighting and poor choices of font colours Some items from the Staffordshire Hoard are on display

Excellent day out for kids and adults
Tamworth Castle is a great, affordable attraction in the middle of the town centre. The castle is very small, but there is lots to see inside. The panels around the museum are very informative and there are lots of games and costumes for kids. The best part for me was seeing some items from the Staffordshire Hoard, which came as a surprise. The castle is close to the shops and cafes in the town and there's a large car park close by that's free on Sundays and bank holidays, and only costs £1.50 on other days. The train station is a 15-minute walk away.

Really fun for a day out with the family. Sometimes there are special events going on. When I went it was near easter and the goal was to find all the cool designed eggs around the castle. Theres also an app you can download with it where you look through your phone and it shows you a scene that happened in that room many years ago. The castle is so packed with history.

The castle is small so we didn't expect much from it but it was packed with interesting things. There's loads of rooms to explore which covers many different time periods from the Saxons to the Georgians. There's plenty of information for adults and lots of stations for children including plenty of dress up and creative activities. I'd definitely recommend going.

The only downside was they had a VR tour you could do using an app but when I tried to download it they said it could only be downloaded on an older version of android so we didn't get to use that.

Amazing how they have restored the different rooms into different times in the history of the castle. Especially enjoyed seeing the hoard.

We spent two hours there but could have spent four hours and still not covered everything there is to discover about this fascinating place.
All the information is well presented and lots of it is interactive making it even more enjoyable for children and teenagers.
The staff are all knowledgeable and friendly.
Excellent value for money.
The Jolly Sailor car park is the one recommended, £1.50 for all day and satnav B78 3JJ took us straight there.
