We drove to Bruny island taking the ferry which was a nice experience. Honestly though the whole hype about the Cape Bruny light house was just miles of dirt road and when you get there, no one is managing the area. Toilets stunk to hell highs as its one of those compost toilets, even wearing a face mask didnt help...really a big put off. We didnt even bother walking up to the lighthouse.. no kiosk or nothing. If ur not staying there or camping and see the photos plastered everywhere of the lighthouse, please consider driving elsewhere!! Really nothing to scream or shout about.

We climbed this twice during our stay. First when we arrived in the early morning and second time that night to see the southern lights. We did see the lights but it wasn’t a dazzling show. More a pulsating black and white show in the south. Great place to see the stars and excellent view of Milky Way. Penguins make their burrows here and if you come at night with a red light ( or red cellophane over your torch) you cdd as n see the penguins coming home. A must do.

The Neck is a great place to stop and look at the amazing veuw. It was very windy the day we went but up the top the little tree blocked the wind. There are about 200 steps to walk up to the top or you can do the easy walk to the beach viewing platform. The penguins can be viewed from both lookouts. There are also public toilets here.

The pictures tell the story. Five minute walk to the top of the steps give the stunning view. We visited in November and there was only one or two car parks available so imagine it gets difficult in peak periods to find a park.

one of the early stops on our visit to Bruny Island - worth a visit to see the views, but an hour is long enough unless you want to walk along the beach. lovely sunny day with cooling breezes off the sea. easy climb up the steps to the lookout - ok for oldies like us and small children. you can use a drone here. lots of parking, clean toilets and free to enter

A must go in bruny. We went for first time at 10am and it was a clear view. Wanted to go during evening time to see if we can spot the penguins but we couldnt make it in time so we tried early in morning the next day - didnt see any penguins but it was a great view still!

If the main attraction here is their lighthouse or “ The Neck” and if you live in Sydney, save yourself the trouble and just drive to the Palm Beach Lighthouse. The wait for the ferry is two hours each way and really there is nothing all that amazing to see here. Given we spent two hours lined up to get on the ferry there was not much time to see many things. The Bruny Island Cheese Co was the highlight with great cheese and beer but why go through all this trouble to get there. My advice is forget this place as a destination because really you spend 5 hours back and forth from Hobart.

The most iconic spot on Bruny and not to be missed, but just time your visit specifically if you are staying on the island. We drove by the Neck when we first arrived around 1.30 and the car pack was full and the lookout absolutely packed. We continued to our accommodation and came back to the Neck around 7pm that night, hardly anyone around and had the lookout to ourselves for at least an hour. Absolutely worth a stop, just pan it well and avoid peak hour if you can.

large carpark. Walk up the stairs to a small platform for views of the Neck, would have like to return for sunset. Rookery and beach walk is flat and short, great to walk on the beach or get the kids out of the car.

Great views from the stairs . It’s quite strange watching surf on one side and still on the other. The penguins come into the burrows around the stairs when it’s fully dark. Bring a high power light with a red filter so not to hurt the penguins

We will be hiring a campervan at the end of Jan ; and just wonder if there is any place for camping on the island ? Thanks

There are several camp areas on Bruny island we stayed at the camping are at the neck you register there and pay a small fee very basic no showers and long drop toilet you can have a fore I think rather handyifyou want to observe fairy penguins and mutton birds as you have to go after dark to do this we spent 2 days in a camper on Bruny loved it's!

Can we drive the rental car to Bury Island? Have heard that, rental car is prohibited to go in. Is that true?
Written 29 August 2018
Look at the rental agreement - some companies require prior approval to take a rental car on an island. With some companies inexplicably the car is not insured whilst on the car ferry getting there but OK on the Bruny Is.

Can you see penguins at any time of the year? Thanks
Written 17 June 2018
Sorry unsure of the answer to your question. I suspect it is seasonal and it certainly does depend on the time of day.

2018年1月1日以后的布鲁尼岛路况如何了?租车公司的保险还是不接受跨岛到布鲁尼岛吗? What about the road on The Neck after Jan 1st 2018? Can we drive safe? Does car rental company cover the insurance in this Bruny Island?
Written 10 January 2018
The road is perfectly safe (if you drive with care) and sealed, you can take your rental car all around the main sealed roads on Bruny Island.

Hello!,
Understand the Neck Lookout is closed for upgrading at the moment. We will be there in Nov and am wondering if we are able to drive to the Neck and also see the sight?
Thanks so much!

It was so easy to drive by the small parking lot to where the stairs are located. One can see the neck as you drive on it, however, the view from the stairs is outstanding. Hopefully, they will have some type of viewing platform.
