A visual feast surrounded by rich history
Nov 2019
Our November visit saw l the healthy abundant roses in full bloom. All usefully labelled with the variety, and grouped in thematic colour schemes. Bearded Irises were absolutely gorgeous. To top it off , the garden is within the 1820's historic heritage listed estate where convict labour built he wealth of the Woolmer family, who owned the farming property for 170 years ! Easily accessible as it is 20 km from Launceston, and a scenic country drive. Enjoyed a cappucino at the cafe to finish, which has a perfectly positioned outlook over the rose garden. If you have a passion for roses, this is a must see. Flat level paths , so good for walking .

Great display despite the weather
Nov 2019
We visited the gardens in November, during the first flush of the season. A fantastic display. You really need to pick the right time of year to visit the gardens to see the roses at their best. The day we visited, despite being November was very cold with strong wind and rain. However the rose display was worth seeing even under these conditions. Note that the grassed areas can be a bit wet underfoot if it has been raining for a few days. The rain over the past weeks had made the grounds fantastically green but had knocked the roses about.

Some areas were better kept than others but given it is a largely volunteer workforce they do a good job. Imagine all that dead heading! Most roses are labelled but some are not, a job that needs to be looked at in the future to enhance the experience. A few roses are a bit straggly and in need of attention even given that the primitive varieties are that way naturally.
The gardens are well worth a stroll around especially if you are also visiting the Woolmers Estate which adjoins the gardens. You can obtain a ticket at the entrance that covers both the Rose Garden and the Historic House. Concessions may apply for pensioners and Seniors Card holders.

Garden of roses
Dec 2018 • Friends
If you love roses and love the scent of them, please come here and enjoy the variety of roses here. But this garden needs more care and trimming to make it more ideal and attractive

Great garden - very snobby staff member!
Mar 2019 • Couples
This was the final stop for us on a one-week self-guided tour of Tasmania. Great place to end the tour - my partner and I love gardens and this one is worth the drive to see. Very sorry to have been treated so poorly by the woman at the front desk, after finding everyone else we had come across in our travels had been so helpful and friendly! Don't let this put you off going though: I assume she won't be there every day!! ((I marked the venue down because of her - our treatment certainly took some of the joy out of the visit for me.)

"National" Rose Garden a disgrace!!
Mar 2019 • Couples
The "National" Rose Garden is a disgrace. It is unkempt, with very few blooms, many roses out of control and in obvious need of attention and dead heading, large spaces in garden beds from which dead roses have presumably been removed, weeds everywhere (including in the water feature which runs through the garden!), untrimmed hedges, uneven lawns dead or dying, gravel paths in need of attention, faded and unreadable signage and an overall feeling of neglect.

What a terrible shame. When we first visited the garden in the same season about five years ago, it was an absolute delight and well cared for. And while it is certainly towards the end to the flowering season, on our trip around Tasmania and in the local area we saw many roses well cared for and still in full bloom.

The literature states that the garden is "cared for" by volunteers. It has clearly got out of their control and the Woolmers Trust, the Government or a sponsor need to take over and bring this garden up to the "National" standard which it purports to represent.

The new building is great, the old building are well worth the visit, however the main attraction the rose gardens is a real let down, all beds had weeds and some more weeds than roses. I noted some weeds were bigger the the roses only showing they had been left unattended for months.

Very average for the NRG
Apr 2018 • Family
Have visited before & must say it has deteriorated quite poorly, name plates on roses unreadable, weeds quite bad, wrong names on roses. Sad for the National Rose Garden, maybe instead of building an new building put some money into what we paid quite a high entrance fee for the gardens! Very disappointed has lost all it’s charm with the new Nigel Peck Centre. An ugly addition to a gorgeous old property. We won’t be back

Great formal garden

We enjoyed the Rose Garden. Lots to see there, and we also walked around the outside of the buildings. Plenty of the Roses were still in bloom in March. Would be outstanding in Spring.

Lots of roses plus other flowers to enjoy. Well worth a visit. Set out very nicely and kept lovely by the one paid worker and volunteers.
