Interesting drive, snorkelling in the lake
Dec 2020
My husband really enjoyed Lake Dobson. Head up slowly. It's really a 40km road, predominantly one way and you may need to back up in places to allow passing if you meet traffic coming the other way. It's probably best for fairly confident drivers. If you like an interesting drive you will enjoy the drive up as you pass a wide variety of scenery as you climb.

There are a couple of short walks on the way up. We only took the time to do one (I think it was called the Mosaic walk or something like that. It wasn't really anything that interesting).

The lake itself is nice. We did the short walk around the lake and my husband and youngest son went snorkelling. The water was chilly, even in December, but they really enjoyed the concept of snorkelling in a lake 1000m above sea level.

Tarn shelf walk is lovely - especially in November when wild flowers are all out.

Great vegetation, waterfalls, lakes and geology in this national park. Not overrun by tourists while Australia's border is closed.

Drive up - it is spectacular.

Fortunately my wife & I had her cousin who is a local, to act as our guide. We drove up to the lake as it is 1,000 metres above sea level. Once there is is decidedly wild & woolly. The wind was brutal. Scenery was well worth it though. The various trees all around the lake were varied & looked superb. Recommended.

Thoroughly enjoyed a walk around Lake Dobson. The vegetation was amazing including Tasmanian waratahs, native grasses and trees.

Great Scenery

Located about 16km from the visitors centre it is well worth the journey on the gravel road.
We walked around the through the panini grove which is quite beautiful.
Weather is changeable and we started the walk in sunshine and finished in a light flurry of snow. Moderate walk, with lovely views of the lake and Eagle Tarn.

Be sure to have a walk around the lake on your visit to Mt Field. Wonderful scenery and it is a relatively flat walk with parts of the track on provided boadwalk.

Storybook Wonderland
Jul 2019 • Couples
I’ve been here twice and each time my childhood self gets excited and I’m in awe and wonder of the natural environment which is beautifully kept. I’ve seen this with snow coming down and with hardly any snow and both times have proven to be wondrous. Worth the visit!

So beautiful in the snow

The snow up here creates a gorgeous winter wonderland. We made a snow man and did some toboganning with the kids. The lake was iced over in parts, we loved it. It's an easy walk around with the kids too.

Peaceful Pandani & Pencil Pine Perfection
May 2019 • Friends
Although the winding drive up and back to Lake Dobson from the Mt. Field visitor centre can be stressful on about 15 kms of narrow, gravel roads, it is well worth it when open for the relaxing Pandani Grove walk. This is quite a short walk around Lake Dobson that is well sheltered but can be wet underfoot in places. The highlight is the sereneness of the lake and the wonderful pencil pines and pandani grove. Further on there is great Apr/May colour when the fagus (deciduous beech trees) puts on there golden autumn foliage, but that extended walk becomes a moderate rather than easy stroll and information should be sought from the visitor centre as well as being well prepared with boots, hiking pack, etc.
