The Butler Institute of American Art is a wonderful local art museum, well worth a visit. Located in central downtown adjacent to Youngstown State University the museum art galleries are quite impressive for a small town art museum. Several of the collections are rotated out regularly prompting repeat visits!

Love Snap the Whip by Homer. The guard is also a favorite. The fact that this museum is free is a wonderful opportunity for people to be exposed to art!

I am not a fan of modern art, however I found this art museum very entertaining. There are some great collections here that you will not find anywhere else, to include local artists.

The Butler is a great place to visit any time of the year. It contains a variety of American paintings. Especially the section of paintings about Native Americans is pretty impressive. There is no admission. It is truly a gem in Youngstown.

I was pleasantly surprised by the large selection of multiples styles of American art; most notably the modern art, which is comparable to the Cleveland Art Museum. This museum is a big bright gem in the heart of Youngstown. The only thing; a few exhibitions were closed on the Saturday when we went and I was a little disappointed that... More

My husband and I have seen many art museums throughout the U.S. and the Butler is the finest museum we have seen in a small city. The collection of American art is outstanding. The one exception is an excellent Van Gogh. There are many famous painters represented: Homer, Sargent, Rockwell, Bierstadt, Moran, to name a few. If we travel to... More

There is also quite a bit of art from local artist and art about the local area. If you do go here, be sure... More

The Butler Institute would be impressive in New York or another big city. In Youngstown, it is even more impressive. The collection of American Art is wonderful. Famous artists and famous paintings, a nice cafe, and a great gift shop.
