About
The Stafford Air & Space Museum is a Smithsonian-affiliated institution. We are named in honor of Lt. General Thomas P. Stafford, veteran astronaut of the Project Gemini & Apollo space programs and a Weatherford, OK native. Filled with artifacts from the earliest days of mankind’s first flights, to the manned spaceflight programs of the “Space Race” era between the U.S. and the Soviet Union, to the future of aerospace, the Museum has something for everyone! The museum houses 63,000 square feet of exhibits and showcases thousands of artifacts, including a General Dynamics F-16 “Fighting Falcon,” the actual Fixed-Base Simulator used to train all 135 Shuttle Program crews, a ten-story Titan II rocket, a moon rock returned to Earth by the crew of Apollo 17 and General Stafford’s actual, flown Gemini VI spacecraft. You’ll be amazed at the history you can find under one roof. Open 7 days a week/360 days a year. Closed on New Year's Day, Easter, Thanksgiving, Christmas Eve & Day.
Duration: 2-3 hours

- P J AverySt. Augustine, Florida1,176 contributionsTop notch museum - worth the visit! This museum exceeded our expectations! Totally deserving of 2023 Travelers Choice Award. A lot of information about aviation and space. Seeing the real life Gemini VI and the Titan Rocket was the highlight of the museum if I had to pick. Plus the new playground across the parking lot was a hit with the kids! An absolutely must for any one! Worth the drive from Oklahoma City.Thank you so much for coming!! - Nick WLondon, United Kingdom163 contributionsGreat time spent at the Stafford A&S museumBack in summer 2022 on our Route 66 trip from the UK, we unfortunately weren't able to visit as the opening hours didn't fit with our schedule... so when we were planning our April OK/TX road trip around the eclipse, a return visit was added to the plan. I thoroughly enjoyed the visit- so many exhibits that you can get up close to, including many iconic artefacts - the Gemini capsule was a favourite- that have been flown in space. The exhibits relating to the Apollo and Apollo/Soyuz missions were another highlight, as were seeing the many gifts exchanged/received by Gen. Stafford from other astronauts/cosmonauts. It was however a poignant visit, following Gen. Stafford's recent passing. I did feel honoured to be there at the time he was lying in state, allowing me to pay my respects to someone who gave so much to space exploration and international collaboration.Thank you for coming.Written 17 May 2024This response is the subjective opinion of the management representative and not of Tripadvisor LLC.Visited April 2024Travelled with familyWritten 5 May 2024
- Joebob747Neenah, Wisconsin384 contributionsMust stop! Great for kids, aviation/history fans. This museum really impressed me. I had expected a standard, run down, old and kind of musty museum. Instead what I got was a clean modern museum with excellent displays, videos, artifacts and also interactive activities. I guess it was under renovation but you really couldn't tell. Well laid out and very informative. Even my wife, who can barely stand another airplane museum, enjoyed this place.Visited May 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 21 June 2024
- Tonya VPea Ridge, Arkansas815 contributionsSpace and flying in OklahomaLt. General Stafford was from Weatherford, which is why this impressive museum is here. If you’re tired of the typical Route 66 stuff this is the place to stop. Lots of interesting and authentic (many used in space flights) items. Highly recommend a visit.Visited July 2024Travelled soloWritten 6 July 2024
- Gayle YColorado Springs, Colorado76 contributionsIf the Stafford isn't on your must see list, it should be.Our visit to the Stafford Air & Space museum was a spur of the moment visit. What a wonderful museum and educational experience. The displays are beautiful, well cared for, and informative. They have some of the best interactive displays about how airplanes work. Their display on the development of space is top-notch. You get an up-close look at so many artifacts that were key to the development of the US air and space programs: replica of the Wright flyer, video and nozzle from the Saturn V, a pristine T-38, life-size replica of the lunar lander (you'll be shocked just how big it was), and so much more. If all of that isn't enough, how about a close-up look at the F-117. It's gorgeous.Visited July 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 1 August 2024
- Linda C19 contributionsawesome museumWe just happened to see an ad in the Oklahoma travel guidebook and happened to be staying nearby so we decided to visit. We were so surprised with the attention to detail and wonderful displays. All of group were engaged and one of the kiddos enjoyed the scavenger hunt. If you are looking for something to do while in the area, we highly recommend checking out the museum, not only was it educational but it was fun as well.Visited August 2024Travelled with familyWritten 22 August 2024
- pandcatmBox Elder, South Dakota79 contributionsBetter Than ExpectedTraveling from KY to AZ. Stopped here via Harvest Hosts. We only had 1.5 hours to go through the museum. If you are like us and enjoy the reading and learning you could easily spend half a day here. They have all kinds of things from early flight, to modern planes, rockets, different space programs etc. There is even a "Shuttle" playground outside. Nice gift shop. We really enjoyed this place. We will come back next time we are going through the area.Visited September 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 11 September 2024

After driving, a while out of Tulsa, we were passing by Weatherford OK. When we saw the signs for the Stafford Air & Space Museum. We stopped to see the Museum. It wasn't a mistake! The museum is outstanding! Well organized, exhibits were well explained. The museum start with a tribute to General Stafford astronaut. His life and achievements! Then it goes into flight information from Kitty Hawk the Saturn V rocket, Different aircraft, the F104 on a stick, is something to see! The exhibit concerning Charlie Brown and Snoopy lets you in on a moon landing event. A film on failed flights, at the beginning, is hilarious! . Anyway, it is defiantly worth the stop! The Staff's dedication with the upkeep is outstanding! They places is immaculate; very clean and organized. One last thing, as you drive in, you'll notice the the types of aircraft silhouette on the lamp posts; a neat introduction to the museum! Well worth the stop!

Who would think that a 'space museum' in the center of the USA would be so comprehensive and unique. General Stafford really used his influence and his personal collection to provide a worthwhile experience for anyone visiting this museum. Displays are clear, concise, begin at the beginning with a Wright Brothers glider and progress to the Saturn rockets.
There is an actual capsule that made it to space!!! You can stand two feet from it!

It would be impossible to pick a favorite part. The life of General Stafford was informative, well laid out, interesting with wonderful artifacts. photos, and personal memorabilia. Then you enter the beginning of flight. I was impressed, astounded and excited. It was a walk through the beginning of flight to the modern era of space . Real life displays and interactive videos were engaging, enlightening, and exciting. The museum was well laid out, clean, and the staff was very friendly and informative. I have been to NASA in Houston many times and I enjoyed this museum as much as NASA. I am excited to revisit the museum next year when the new additions and changes will have been completed. It is a must see if you are anywhere close to Weatherford, Oklahoma.

My wife and I take day trips from the Oklahoma City area to explore neighboring communities in Oklahoma. We traveled I-40 to Weatherford and toured the SA&SM. We truly enjoyed the self paced and self guided tour. We are both "Seasoned" citizens and lived through ALL of the space race from frequent sonic booms to the moon landing and beyond. It was most interesting to view many items first hand that have been preserved and displayed. Of particular interest was the joint American and Russian space docking. It was a terrific idea for the astronauts/cosmonauts to autograph the capsules and other artifacts. Overall an excellent afternoon for us. Strongly encourage you to visit. Bring the kids so they learn the history of what the "Right Stuff" is. . . .

This museum is really a tribute to Stafford, not an air and space museum. It does have maybe 15-20 planes, many on loan from the National Air Force Museum at Wright Patterson AFB in Dayton. Also some good info on Gemini and Appolo programs. The whole museum would fit into the lobby of the National Air Force Museum.

As a space buff from the time I was a kid, this place is second only to visiting Canaveral in Florida. We only had about 1/2-hour to breeze through before closing. I could have used half-a-day. Excellent exhibits, model work, stories preserved in placards, actual hardware and info about Gen. Stafford himself kept me captivated. If the subject interests you, make sure you allow the TIME to see everything!

From the moment you see the fighter jet speeding into the sky, you know this is going to be great and it is. We spent 2 hours getting to know General Stafford and all of his achievements and good will throughout his life. I was also very moved when I read how his local teachers helped and tutored him to his full potential.

Outstanding! The museum has some of the best rocket engine exhibits I've seen (and I used to work in the industry). The F-1 exhibit is unbeatable and the SSME powerhead was a surprise ... a fantastic surprise. The staff are incredibly welcoming. It was a pleasure to make a donation. Keep up the great work, I hope I can return some day.

While I am not a big space or aircraft fan, this museum is a great place to stop if you are in the Weatherford area. I would have expected this museum to be located in a much more urban area. Lots of space history, rockets, spacecraft, engines, and aircraft, plus the personal story of Thomas Stafford.

If you should be so lucky to pass this way again, we allow service dogs in the museum.
