Soft sandy beaches. Plenty of available shade. Multiple 'hideaways' ;-) wink wink
You can literally walk halfway across the Columbia River before wetting your chest. Trust me, I just did it yesterday, 6-15-15. Couples, singles, groups, families, all genders are welcome. State park so please keep your unnatural drugs, cigarettes, glass, etc off the beach.

I was anticipating a cool beach with an optional clothing area with people who weren't sexual, but then I came across many old men "stroking it" (WHILE LOOKING AT ME! I'm a teenage male! Probably the youngest person there.). Then also, I came across two men who were "getting it on". I'm fine with nudity as long as it's not sexual in a public place.
This place made me feel gross. It was as if it was a gay beach to hook up with other guys. I am not attracted to that stuff. I wanted to go for the sun.
The place, by itself, is really nice. Just the people who go there are not. And very creepy.
I HIGHLY ADVISE YOU: DO NOT GO THERE IF YOU DON'T LIKE THIS STUFF! And plus, this stuff is illegal.
I'm just emotionally scarred...

This a a swimming/beach located right on the beautiful Columbia River. But, beware, they do have a nude section.

I've been reading the reviews and am astounded by the number of people who are shocked that they might run into a nude person when at the east end of the beach. There's a large sign (half the size of a billboard) at the entrance to the ramp that leads to the beach that clearly states "CLOTHING OPTIONAL SECTION." The nude beach is the primary reason people go to the beach at Rooster Rock, as opposed to just the park. The other nude beach (on Sauvie Island) isn't nearly as picturesque and too many of those folks choose to wear swimwear and designer underwear. If one wants to go to a clothing optional beach, and not run into many nude sun bathers, they should go to Collins beach on Sauvie Island.
As for Rooster Rock, it's the best nude beach I've gone to (I've been to several up and down the west coast). There's paved parking, patrol rangers on premise, and a very friendly/courteous groups of users. Everyone on the beach is polite. If you're traumatized by the site of a naked body, this isn't the place for you.

This is a GREAT place to swim--all sandy, no rocks, nice, clean, calm water, beautiful views. $5 to get in, take a right after you go thru the entrance gate.
After you park, however, it is about a 3/4 mile hike down to the beach, which is clothing optional. There is a section of beach that is clothing required, but it is difficult to get to and honestly, the best beach is the clothing optional one because it includes Sand Island.
Once you get down to the beach you can opt to walk about another 1/4 mile in in ankle-to-thigh deep sandy-bottom water out to the island, and it's worth it. Dogs are required to be on a leash, but I imagine if they're under voice control & you clean up after them it wouldn't be a problem as there is plenty of space here to swim and spread out. Very nice area, highly recommend as long as you're not bothered by a little nudity....it's about half & half out there. I experienced none of the "creepiness" a former (and seemingly immature) reviewer spoke of.
Pack a cooler, a chair, some sunscreen and maybe an umbrella for shade, and go. The vibe is positive, the location beautiful and people are nice--it's truly an Oregon experience.

Rooster Rock State Park is one of the most scenic and beautiful parks I have ever visited. Located about 15 miles East of Portland on the beautiful Columbia Gorge River it welcomes, wind surfers, wind kiters, hikers, boaters, swimmers, picnic folks and nudists.
Rooster Rock is one of only two legally sanctioned clothing optional areas in Oregon. The American Association for Nude Recreation (AANR) has officially adopted this park through the State Adopt-A-Park program. Since 2002 AANR and the park staff have worked together to create a family friendly non-sexual clothing optional recreational area of the park.
Sand dunes to climb, trails to hike and all au natural make for a great visit.

We hiked almost all the way around Sand Island. Crossed paths with around a dozen nude people. All very pleasant to chat with. We were nude, also. (The main reason for being on Sand Island.)
We were able to walk bare foot the entire time. The fine, soft sand and even the mud felt really good on the feet. There were no rocks in the swimming areas, either.
Very clean. We normally haul out lots of trash that others leave behind.
Very SAFE for beach-goers of all ages.
I suggest that you try the clothing optional section of the beach. You will no doubt find that naturists/nudists are very pleasant and friendly. They also clean up after themselves. BTW: The naturists/nudists self police the beach to keep the "pervs" out.

Be aware that there is a public nude beach to the east of the end of the east parking lot. The state wants it to be family oriented, so if you go that way, remember that nudity is legal, public indecency is not. Rangers in the park hand out cards made up by the American Association for Nude Recreation telling what is legal and not. They also have emergency numbers on them. Ask for a card if you want one.
There is a parking fee per day. There are also state yearly passes and free passes to some disabled veterans. No overnighters as the park does close at 10.
High water can drastically affect the available beach area. Besides the beaches, the park has lots of picnic areas including group areas. There are no restrooms on any beach, but a good amount in the upper park. No dogs on the beach, but there is a public off-leash area near the boat launch area in the west near the rock itself. During the summer, the Rose City Astronomers and the Oregon Museum of Science and Industry (OMSI) co-sponsor "star parties" each month for viewing of the moon, stars, planets, comets and galaxies using members equipment. Free except for parking fee. Check the organizations' websites.
Kiters, windsurfers, parasailers and others also use the area near the beach.

Good for families and picnicing on the Columbia river. Good boat launch. When the water is down and you can reach the sand island the beaches are perfect for skinny dipping. No worries, you will be among hundreds!

My wife and I have been to Rooster Rock's clothing optional beach several times over the past 3 years. As noted, there is a gay men's section on the eastern most part of the slough. (I've never seen inappropriate behavior.) The rest of it is mixed gender.
In the late spring through the fall, you can hike across to Sand Island where you can enjoy two miles of pristine clean beaches and as much solitude as you want. The scenery is just spectacular. Lots of folks kayak up from the park or inter-tube across the slough to get to the island. (The scenery and solitude is much better on Sand Island than on the beach that is connected by the trail to the park.)
Couples, solo men and solo women all come out and enjoy a bit of paradise. It has always felt safe and (with very rare exception) is gawker-free. You can always find a quiet spot even on busy weekends. There are rarely any parties going on -- it's just too far to carry all the stuff. (Older posts refer to a "creep-factor." We've been there a number of times recently and have never seen or felt that.)
Make sure you bring plenty of water. There are no services on Sand Island. We've seen lots of folks trying to hydrate with beer, wine, and champagne -- with predictable results.
We've been to Sauvie's Island in the past. We prefer Rooster Rock for the scenery, more room to yourself, and the quiet respectful vibe.

Yeah. Dogs are allowed on leashes but it’s probably okay to let your dog splash in the water off leash for a while if they are well behaved (this is Oregon for gosh sakes). The clothing optional area is huge - it’s not just one area where people congregate. It’s a big area where you can find a relatively secluded spot if that suits you.

Just out of curiosity; why did you venture over to to 'clothing optional' area? Were you totally unaware that it existed? Or there out of curiosity, maybe hoping you'd stumble upon some topless girls??? Don't get me wrong, what you describe seeing is totally profane and inappropriate, and I can imagine seeing something like that as being traumatic. It really makes it hard to believe in tolerance and diversity.
Written 27 August 2015
This was not an accidental venture. I was visiting from out of town, and I went with a local resident who knew all about the park. There is nothing profane or inappropriate about this place: all the adults who choose to go make the choice. There are plenty of signs delineating the clothing optional area, and there are all kinds of people there: men, women, couples, groups, singles, friends, gay, straight, all body sizes and shapes and colors, etc. The clothing-optional part of the beach is registered and maintained by a national association for nudists, and it feels safe and clean. To me, respecting those choices and giving a space for people to enjoy recreation without clothes is, in fact, a value for tolerance and diversity and teaches us to accept our bodies without shame.
