We visited both the Painted Hills and the Fossil Beds. The visitors Center is chock full of specimens and interactive displays. The colors of the hills are amazing. The Fossil Beds offer a chance to see scientists at work and the short film explains how...More

The visitor center was very neat. A lot of interesting fossils that have been found in the area. I had no idea that they would be found in Oregon.

We spent the whole day driving out of Bend to admire the fantastic scenery that has unraveled itself as we followed the John Day Fossil Beds, Sheep Rock and Painted Hills. We couldn’t believe the vastness of the landscape and the natural wonders that we...More

Oregon's John Day Fossil Beds Painted Hills unit is worth the drive off the main highway at any time of the year. The subtle range of colors in the rocks and sand - browns, yellows and light greens - is remarkable. In the summer and...More

We wish that it would have been cooler as we wanted to hike but it was way too hot for us. Visitors Center was average.

We did not make it to the Clarno Unit but did spend time in the Painted Hills and Sheep Rock area. Lots of beautiful land and a great drive. Minimal services available so make sure you have food, water and gas just in case.

Painted Hills Unit is the most visually impressive of the ones we saw-which included Sheep Rock Unit and the Thomas Condon Paleontology Center Unit. We went on most of the trails, but not the longest one. Restrooms are now the composting type, and they are...More

There were so many cool formations to see, but be careful...there aren't always spots to pull over and we almost had a head on collision as we were gawking and others were gawking and no one was watching the road as well as they should...More

The Painted Hills have such a variety of colorful landscape, especially near sunset. Watching the shadows of inching across the hills was amazing. Definitely worth a visit!

We got out to enjoy the view and snap some photos. Wish there was a bit more information or even a small visitors centre here- but we loved the panoramic views, and it was not busy at all on an afternoon in mid May. Lots...More

Mapquest says it's 4 hrs 15 mins, 215 miles from Portland to Mitchell, OR which is the closest city. Add about 10-15 miles & @20 mins to that to get to the Painted Hills Unit.
