Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

Peaceful place to relax in the center of historic Portland. Chairs set out for resting and people watching. Covered areas fir picnics. About a dozen food trucks with varying cuisines. Walkways to the square were interesting, especially the inscribed stonework near Louis Vitton. Great spot for urban sketching, if you are so inclined.

This is a cool little square in the heart of the city that has a Starbucks and outdoor seating. There are also food trucks parked there, although the egg truck is average at best, if you grab a coffee and a breakfast sandwich it's a fun place to sit and people watch. There are some cool photo stops in the square too and the animal fountains in the area are really cute.

There is no way to describe pioneer square enough for you to grasp the idea, but i will certainly try.
this is a beautiful square in the center of the downtown area. It is the hub for all the activity downtown as you can catch the MAX, (the above-ground rail system) any of the "bendable" buses that have double the capacity of a less flexible bus, or a traditional bus as well. Here at pioneer square you can see that the foundation of the "square" is made of bricks with the names of people that have died in the struggle with HIV/AIDS. I think it is heartwarming to read them as you stand around and take in the surroundings. If you take the time to sit still, you will see the "children of the night", the various young goth kids, you will see men and women in business suits going to and from thier lucritive jobs in thier respective offices, or tourists taking pictures of themselves here as well.
At lunchtime, you can see a variety of vendors set up shop from indian food to straight up all american hot dogs and coffee stands, all the nearby office people get in long lines to get thier delictible treats.
It also has a restroom area inside of a builiding there at the square, i don't remember what else was in the building.... it's been awhile since i've been there...
all in all, it is a very relaxing place with trees all around where you can sit and relax and get a good vibe of the portland downtown area. I recommend to anyone coming to visit!!

I guess this might be a fun place when there is something going on (festival, movie, concert), but otherwise it's just a big hangout for homeless people and tourists who believed the guidebooks. There is a visitor's center with helpful employees...and a gender neutral bathroom that was very unsettling for my children. My teenage daughter didn't feel safe going into the same bathroom as a big homeless man with all of his worldly possessions...it was an odd experience. There are places to sit and have a snack, but we were happy to get away on the train as soon as we could and head elsewhere.

This is actually a really nice spot in the city centre, but there wasn't much going on when were there in late October. There's a fantastic tourist office you enter on a walkway in the centre of the fountain, Starbucks (of course), some food trucks, and the street sign with all the cities on it is pretty cool, but there is also a lot of homeless people and addicts hanging around, which is a big issue in the city in general. We'd like to go back in the summer when things are happening. Sure it would be a better experience.

I’ve been by here 3 times this week and it’s a cesspool of homeless people. Way too many young addicts begging for money and poor mentally ill people wandering. Portland needs to get this situation under control. Won’t be back.

Downtown Portland used to be nice until the Mayor allowed camping by the homeless. Now you can't walk down the street without seeing a junkie (often with a needle in their arm) getting panhandled or stepping in human waste. Now that the nicer weather is on it's way, it will get even worse. Don't leave anything in your vehicle or it will likely get broken into. Be warned.

I guess we missed the charm of this area. We walked through twice and found it to be dirty and crowded with a large number of homeless folks. I have no problem with that, but don't rate it highly as a tourist destination.

Fairly crummy little area. There are fifty, unwashed hippies competing for the oxygen. There are little junkies and runaways hanging out trying to mug you. The city puts in shows and exhibits to tempt folks but in fact the police and city refuse to move in an incarcerate the dirty, foul and lazy square puppies who hang out. (Square puppy equals a feral youth who ran away from home because mommy and daddy had the audacity to tell them no x-box until homework is complete. Puppy because they can't hang with the big dogs.)
This area is OK if you want to get the light rail...and it has a Starbucks. But they seriously need to round up the feral rodents who panhandle and do drugs there. They need to incarcerate these punks and put them on hard labor.
Best bet is stay away from here and spend your money elsewhere until the police clean the gutter scum out.

it may be Portland's "living room".... But it's really a place where troubled teens, bums, and pesky protesters hang out. Often times when walking from Pioneer shopping mall to Nordstrom- I do not feel comfortable walking amongst the riff raff- as they sometimes heckle and have that group gang mentality. Be careful at night. Police presence is usually pretty good- as there are high end stores surrounding the square.
On a plus side lots of events are held here: beer fest, Christmas tree lighting, etc.
