Considered the most authentic Japanese Garden outside of Japan, the Portland Japanese Garden is a haven of tranquil beauty in all four seasons. In 2016 and 2017 the Garden is undergoing a major expansion project which will add a Cultural Village -- complete with classroom, exhibition, and gallery space and an authentic Japanese Tea Cafe -- outside the original Garden's gates.

The Japanese Garden is so peaceful and beautiful, even in December. The beautifully shaped bushes and carefully planned gardens shine through even in the midst of winter. The garden is smaller than I expected but every piece of it is planned for beauty and tranquility. It's a must see.

So many different species, colors, scents. Magical place with a good view. Good location to take some wedding/prom pics

Love the place. Although we went on December and it was not much color, the place was very well maintained and give you a sense of inner peace that you don't see very often. There is no place to buy water or drinks so bring your own.

Everyone will say the same thing about how beautiful the Japanese Gardens are. So yes, let us get that out of the way first. You likely have never visited something quite like this before, at least not on this scale. However, what I really enjoyed about it was the attention to cultural detail the Japanese Gardens provided. They offered tours... More

I visited at a ridiculously rainy time of the year, resulting in a lot of dirt and debris in the ponds and of course everything was wet and muddy, and I would still highly recommend checking this place out. Even in rainiest season! Everything was so beautifully laid out, and uniquely designed within the construct of a traditional Japanese garden.... More

I spent an afternoon exploring the gardens with my husband. It was a beautiful and peaceful place. We really enjoyed walking through the gardens. It is almost all outside, so make sure to dress accordingly!

This is one of my favorite places in all Portland. You can stroll through beauty at your own pace. I generally take a book and stop to read for a bit at one of the many benches you will find throughout the garden. I find this helps in preventing any tendency to rush through. For a $40 annual fee seniors... More

An excellent Japanese garden, with a beauty that compares well to many in Japan. We went there on an overcast fall day and it was still worth the effort. Good composition of plants and landscape. At the moment (November 2016) they have construction going on for an expansion. The construction has nearly no effect on what makes this garden worthwhile.... More
