Perhaps the most celebrated of all birder destinations in the Northwest. Birders might well see a hundred species of birds at Malheur from August through November.

This a birders paradise. This beautiful refuge has nice building amenities, lawns, gardens and trees around the property. We note that volunteers provide information to the visitors and helped to show us the layout. On the short drive from Burns OR we saw pronghorns and...More

My wife and I truly love Malheur National Wildlife Refuge, and we have visited this place many times over the last 30+ years. The "classic" time to visit Malheur NWR is the Memorial Day weekend, when many Oregon birders are there, and many species of...More

We stopped here in October, which is a slow time of the year for this area. My husband and I were the only visitors. The visitor center was closed. . We assumed the small museum was also closed, but when we tried the door, it...More

I was expecting to enjoy the bird watching at Malheur, but I was not expecting to see so many species in such a short time. The Headquarters offers easy viewing, and is an attractor for the incoming birds on their Pacific Flyway. The bird-watching near...More

We stayed with a group of friends at the hotel/restaurant in Frenchglen and hiked and drove thru most of this Refuge. At the Field Station an ornithologist talked with us about and showed us birds in the area. Fascinating! (Scheduled this in advance). Also spent...More

This is really in the middle of nowhere. Marshy, swampy areas and dry sage brush areas. Probably shouldn't have been suprised when we drove thru about 5 miles of huge swarming grasshoppers (like a blizzard!). No facilities so if you needed to relieve yourself you...More

This place is amazing! Wow! I could not believe how many welcoming, bearded men there were at this place. So cuddly! They really made you feel like you were at home. Beds were a little stiff and the food was in short supply. No wifi,...More

So, we heard all about this place from some of our bros back at school, and were totally stoked to check it. It was a let down from the word go. We drove all the way down to see some deer, walk around some unspoiled...More

Not much winter wildlife. This would be a fun springtime drive. Several options for viewing birds, you could easily make this a 2 day outing. I will need to go back during spring or summer.

Yet another spectacular Oregon wildlife area that almost criminally (yet, thankfully!) is ignored by the tourist hordes. We went at sunset and had the entire small bay to ourselves. Many species of birds were on view, including a huge flock of brightly colored yellow-headed blackbirds....More
