The Dalles is reportedly named for the columnar basalt rocks carved out by the Columbia River. The town is indeed very scenic, but it's much more! The whole place has a wonderful small-town feel, and including great shops, art wall murals, restaurants, pubs and breweries.

My son & I spent a wonderfully fantastic weekend in The Dalles just recently. I live in Florida and would definitely return if given the chance. So much to do and see.

We are active and inquiring so two days in this area was great. We loved the walk/hike up to the old tunnels, the Discovery Center, the Bonneville Dam and Fish Ladder and that awful/ terrible/ wonderful climb up that big volcano cone, Beacon Rock.

It's a busy little town in the summer. A few nice things to see, but as far as cities go, it's nothing special. Wouldn't stay more than two days.

We walked around and viewed the murals. Some really need repair but I'm so glad we took the time to see them. Fun stop.
