This was the Gettysburg of the American War for Independence. Full of drama, bloodshed and near destruction of the Continental forces. Start at the visitor's center. Get the big picture. Lunch at Hank's Place by the river where Washington met the British army's feint. Then travel north along the river to the Birmingham Meetinghouse -- site of some the fiercest fighting of the war. Then amble south, passing rolling fields where the flanking arm of the British army marched down on Washington's exposed flank. See if you can find Sandy Hollow -- where Lafayette was wounded trying to rally American troops -- and a hodgepodge of patriots, militiamen and Continentals somehow managed to hold off the best troops of the British army (and the world) -- saving Washington's army to fight for freedom another day.…

Today my Quester group had a wonderful tour with our excellent guide, Andrew. His knowledge of the place and times of the battle, September 11, 1777, is amazing. We all were totally impressed.

The park is only about 50 acres, but the actual battlefield is 35,000 acres. The Visitor’s Center is small but informative. However we chanced to visit on November 30 when they celebrate Patriot’s Day with musket firing demonstrations, people in costume of 1777 cooking recipes of the time, and special talks as well as other activities. There was a talk about the research into the troop movements based on records of roads in Chester County in 1777 as well as claims for reimbursement after the war identifying which army caused the losses and where. Very detailed - numbers of sheep, hogs, fence rails, acres of corn, even bee hives. Fascinating and made me think of the experience of the colonial citizens during the war differently.…

Our tour group of 31 arranged for the battlefield tour guides to lead our tour of the Quaker homes and then direct our tour bus so we could move through the battle areas.Some of the areas of the battlefield are now private property so touring by bus made the battlefield more geographically understandable. I am not a battlefield enthusiast but being able to see the scope and timetable of the battle really made it more comprehensible: the weight of what they had to carry and how far, what they could and couldn't see and the challenges of communicating and dating the communications. The battle became more realistic than seeing a video.…

Our main reason to visit Chadds Ford was for the Wyeths, but a tour of the battlefield added greatly to our enjoyment of the area. Our tour guide was fascinating in the stories he told & we felt like we were having a conversation with history. Loved all the insights he shared, especially regarding LaFayette. If you're in the Chadds Ford area, you really should include this destination in your experiences.…
