The Portage Railroad Memorial has an amazing history of a railroad built to haul canal boats over the mountain. It is a small museum - but very informative. The preservation of a steam engine station house is very nice.

This parks highlights one of the first major railroad systems in America, which was used as transportation between the Allegheny Mountains using steam power. The exhibits and short film make this an educational stop with checking out.

A must-see National Park that explains the intermediate engineering solution before the Horseshoe Curve was built. A system of steam-powered rope pulleys would haul canal barges up 10 inclines to make passage over the Allegheny Mountains. Fascinating.
