small but worth a visit

this is a very small museum, with not too big selection of artifacts, but it gives you an idea about the area, the history and tradition

An important museum about the region history and culture. Better visit it with a local guide. Recommended.

A good place to get a general overview of the region and its history and culture. Easy to find, open in the morning, closed in midday and reopens at 2pm local time (4 Beijing time). Free entry, written information in English, well presented, intersting and important. It takes 30 minutes to an hour and not to be missed. No photography.

Sadly we arrived to find the museum closed until further notice and manned by a band of friendly policemen....BUT....a very helpful woman with a key appeared out of nowhere and opened a room with what most people come to see these days...two sad little dessicated mummies in exquisite burial clothing in a glass case, and a selection of interesting artifacts, which prove 'beyond doubt' that Hotan is, was, and ever shall be, inextricably part of China. Everything is beautifully displayed against the background of large photographic frescos of ancient cities in the desert. Worth standing helpless at the main gate and smiling until someone lets you in. More displays upstairs bt all closed until further notice
