About
Once a thriving carpet factory, the Stour Vale Mill is now home to the only Museum of Carpet in the country. A centre of heritage, art and industry the Museum of Carpet has four galleries that celebrate the history of carpet design, the evolution of carpet manufacture and the heritage of those who worked in local industry. Visit us today and watch our talented team of volunteers spin wool, weave Kidderminster stuff and produce Wilton & Axminster rugs on our 19th and 20th century looms. The Museum has two weaving sheds, and four galleries decked out with modern interactives, stunning photographs and immersive videos. You can try your hand at designing, weaving or exploring Kidderminster’s history, virtually, on our clever interactives. This vibrant, spacious, and modern museum is the perfect venue for a fun day.

What a lovely way to find out about the local area. Lot's of accessible and interactive exhibits and lots to discover. Volunteers are brilliant too. Gift shop and activities for children. Excellent value for money. Well worth a visit.

Wonderful gem of our industrial past
Jul 2021 • Solo
An excellent museum telling the social and industrial history of Kidderminster. I was really impressed by the knowledgeable staff, the demonstrations of machinery and the wonderful collection of photographs. I would definitely recommend a visit.

A caring museum
Aug 2020 • Family
We had a real surprise visiting The Museum of the Carpet. We took our eight year old granddaughter and were worried that it might not be interesting enough for her. We needn’t have worried as she loved it. Anthea, who explained the looms to us, was superb. She directed her questions directly to our granddaughter and captured her attention. She sealed it by showing her how and a small loom worked and giving her advice as she did some weaving. We had to prize her away. It is a lovely museum with lots of hands on interactive displays and staffed by people who really care about their subject. To cap it all entry if free until the end of August.

An interesting little museum on a local industry. Thanks to volunteers Janet, Cedric and Ged who really brought the whole thing to life. The power looms were very impressive.

Superb museum brought alive by brilliant volunteers
Jan 2020
Friendly and amazingly knowledgable volunteer staff make your visit here both a thrill and an education. Make sure you go when the power loom is run as this is noisily exhilarating and equally fascinating. 85 year old Brian, a veteran of 40 years in the industry and a bostin’ bloke besides, is pretty much the last weaver who can run this incredible piece of 19th century tech. Some one else MUST be trained up for the future!

Really interesting

We had a really good time here, lots of interesting facts along with interactive fun things to do. We met Brian who worked at the museum, he was very knowledgeable and fascinating to talk too. This isn't the largest museum in the world but its definitely worth a visit. Thank you Brian and yes we did complete the puzzle before it was shut up time!!!

Excellent museum and outsanding staff
Jan 2020
We visited her for my wife's 60th birthday! Well worth the trip from Leicester for the staff alone! The lady on the till was very helpful and the first volunteer we met could not have been friendlier - loads of info about carpet weaving in Kidderminster. She introduced us to volunteers Jed and Audrey who had both worked in the carpet mills. They demonstrated the loom and the other machines with a fascinating first hand commentary. Superb displays - great shop and altogether brilliant experience - well done to everyone involved in this superb museum.

Had a marvellous couple of hours here. The displays are excellent and varied. But the volunteers knowledge and enthusiasm was a joy to behold. Just cannot believe we have never visited before. A really memorable experience- thank you to all.

So much more than a Museum!
Oct 2019
One may wonder if there is anything interesting about carpets, well now we know.......most definitely yes!

While the entrance to the Museum is through Morrisons entrance, once through the door the sheer depth and quality of the experience, enhanced by very knowledgeable and engaging staff make this a must do visit.

The social history, techniques, design, machinery etc mean from now on, every time I tread on a carpet I will remember this place, the town and the people.

If you can arrange to see the power looms in operation.by organising a small group visit so much the better. But that is not essential to the understanding of this fascinating product and it's makers.

Parking can be an issue in Kidderminster so check with the Museum before you visit.
