- Anna67 contributionsNice place for a walkThe actual place is 5 stars as it’s really nice to walk around. As a NT member it was also free. The car park was shocking later on. Some people hadn’t parked within the white lines on the fence making it a challenge to get in the car. Also a car had been parked so badly it was difficult to get out the car park. There were cars parked both sides of the road out so luckily I didn’t meet anyone coming up. I’m sure there used to be an overflow car park so I’ve no idea why it wasn’t used. I’d take a picnic on a nice day. The queue barely moved whilst we had our lunch.Visited March 2023Travelled with friendsWritten 19 March 2023
- Michael SWorksop, United Kingdom33 contributions"Went......Worth a visitI knew this place existed but had never thought to visit. I heard it had been given a huge makeover as it had fallen in to disrepair. What I didn't realise is the large stately home wasn't open to the public as it is a college(once again),having been one from 1948-1978. Alas this meant we could enjoy the gardens and a lovely conservatory, also a small ruin of a castle at the top end of the gardens and woodlands, great if you're a walker and enjoy the countryside views, with deer nearby. Cafe is good size and has some good food and drink after your well earned rest, entry price is reasonable, also there is a kids adventure playground with lots of climbing and a zip wire, looks a good day out with picnic weather permitting.Visited March 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 2 April 2023
- Emma C1 contributionNice gardens- very bad cafeCafe was extremely disappointing, very limited options, slow service, and very expensive. Would not dine here again. Yet Wentworth Castle redeemed itself with its beautiful gardens. However, it begs the question whether without such gardens being in bloom, would it have been such a nice trip? Overall, I enjoyed my time here and only such a beautiful walk was capable of redeeming the cafe experience.Visited May 2023Written 29 May 2023
- Stephen H1 contributionUnderwhelmingThis was a disappointment and will not return, the gardens are very neglected and in many areas empty or very badly overgrown with weeds and clearly not a well managed site. The cafe had almost no sandwiches left by 13:30 on a not very busy day and very over priced with un managed staff trying to cope. It was understood the hall is not open to the public but the rest was underwhelmingVisited June 2023Travelled with friendsWritten 29 June 2023
- Heather CManchester, United Kingdom8 contributionsHidden gemThis was my second visit in two months. Despite being a NT member for a long time Wentworth Castle had never been on my radar, maybe something to do with the changing management and/or the way it is publicised? All the staff we spoke to were very friendly. One explained they hold several National Collections which was no doubt why the grounds looked so stunning in May. Absolutely beautiful. Our second visit was with young children. They loved the playground, which was clean and not busy. It's nice that it's near to the cafe, toilets, and entrance. In many NT properties you have to walk quite a long way to find the playgrounds. We didn't make it to the castle with the kids but I'm sure they would have enjoyed looking for the dragon. It is about 1 km , slightly uphill, so be prepared if you have a lot of kit and children with you! Highly recommendedVisited July 2023Travelled with familyWritten 14 July 2023
- EnglishNomad02London, United Kingdom127 contributionsSadly disappointed. So sorry that I was not able to give this a higher score. The gardens were a huge disappointment, having known this place well 15 years ago when it was beautifully maintained. As a plus, it was lovely to finally see the restored Victorian Glasshouse, together with the sundial statue back in its original venue.Visited July 2023Travelled soloWritten 22 July 2023
- hungryveganfamilyNottingham, United Kingdom191 contributionsGood visitSpent a very nice day here. Staff friendly, lots of space & interest for children. They loved climbing the castle steps. Gardens a little tatty in places but much effort is being made over a huge site. Could make more of highlighting the history of slavery linked to the site, only a small mention in the glasshouse. Nice cafe, good toilets.Visited June 2023Written 30 July 2023
- Ayjay3Birmingham, United Kingdom57 contributionsSame old food!Same old boring food as at every National Trust cafe these days. Fed up with pasty at every visit - each one used to do localised hit food but not any more. Coffee and cream tea very good though.Visited August 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 22 August 2023
- PBPGYorkshire, United Kingdom6,007 contributionsGood GardensQuite a long uphill walk to the castle and gardens but there is a buggy provided if you can’t face it. Gardens are in need of some attention, apart from the Victorian flower garden which was very good. The conservatory is a great piece of restoration work but somewhat disappointing inside for the variety of plants on show.Visited September 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 9 September 2023

Saturday 28th October was the first time we visited Wentworth Castle Gardens We had a enjoyable walk around the gardens and up to the castle. The best thing about this place is the staff who were very helpful and friendly. The lady who served us at the till in the cafe was welcoming and very knowledgeable about the history of the place. The carrot cake was delicious we will be back again very soon for another slice.

Spent a good five hours walking around the gardens and grounds, looked at all the old buildings and was thrilled to see all the deers and were able to walk close to the heard.
Some fascinating trees and plants for anyone keen on botany.
Though we didn’t have any grandkids with us we noticed there was lots for kids including story telling.

Wentworth Castle is the former seat of the Earls of Strafford. The castle is really a Palladian mansion, albeit a very magnificent mansion. The castle wasn’t open for visitors on the day as it’s normally used by the Northern College of Adult Residential Education. The staff mentioned that it’s open once a month for . So do check the National Trust Site if you really want to visit.
Besides the great mansion, the only notable structure is Stainborough Castle, a garden folly constructed to look like a ruin. One of the towers in Stainborough is climbable via a spiral staircase where there are views of the Wentworth Gardens.
A visit to Wentworth Castle Gardens is a visit to the grounds of the estate. There’s a small conservatory, several woodland walks, a Victorian garden, Union Jack Garden and parkland with plenty of activities for children.

Disappointing, very disappointing! Overpriced food and the gardens have a neglected feel about them. Much work to do I'm afraid.

No they don't but if you don't want to go into the garden you can walk around the edge which is lovely. You can go as far as the visitor centre for a drink etc but not through into the actual gardens.
Is they a discount for disability people who r on D L A and does carer av to pay
Claire W
Barnsley, UK4 contributions
Hi there! Disabled visitor's are charged the standard admission price, but carers are admitted for free. There is some useful information about facilities at the Gardens on the Visitors with Disabilities tab on the website. Hope that is helpful.

Wentworth Castle Gardens lies between the villages of Stainborough and Hood Green, near Barnsley, about 3 miles from Barnsley town centre.
Hi there!
Services 23, 23A and 24 from Barnsley Interchange to Penistone, Stocksbridge and Denby Dale run along Lowe Lane to the Gardens. Ask the driver for "Northern College" if they are not sure which stop is the closest to the Gardens. Check out the Traveline website for up to date service times. Hope this is helpful.

Yes, we have a cafe which serves hot and cold options. Soups are home made and usually veggie, jacket potatoes usually available and generally a veggie pie or panini available too. Cakes and coffees too.

How wheelchair accessible are the grounds?
Claire W
Barnsley, UK4 contributions
The Gardens are hilly, and there is a full Access Statement on our website under the tab Visitors with Disabilities, these are the key points:
Car Parking:
There is a 5 minute walk uphill from the visitor car park to the Long Barn Visitor Centre. Disabled visitors may use a parking area nearer to the Visitor Centre, however spaces are limited. Please follow signs to Disabled car parking from the main car park.
The Long Barn Visitor Centre which includes our shop and café is fully accessible. There are accessible toilet facilities on the lower and upper floors and a lift is available.
The Gardens - The paths as far as the lower garden and the Victorian Conservatory are well surfaced and are at a 1:12 gradient or less. However, further towards the castle the gradients increase and some of the surfaces are grass or unsurfaced paths and may be as steep as 1:7 in places.
There are some steps in the Garden, but there is always an alternative route.
Golf Buggies:
The Trust has a golf buggy which may be pre-booked for the use of visitors who find the walk through the gardens difficult, but please note this is not an adapted vehicle and the driver needs to be able to control foot pedals.
There is a charge of £5 to hire a buggy to help cover the costs of maintenance. Users of the golf buggy need to be over 17 years and must pass a competence test before taking the buggy out. For more information or to reserve a buggy before your visit, please call (01226) 776040. Pre-booking is strongly recommended.
I hope this helps, please ring us for any further information.

Can you Get there by any bus-service? From York?
Claire W
Barnsley, UK4 contributions
Hello, yes it is possible. From York we would recommend coming by train to Barnsley interchange, where you can catch a bus to "Stainborough". Services 23, 23A or 24 pass the Gardens. Service details can be found on the Yorkshire Travel website or on Wentworth Castle's website "directions pages".
Hope that helps.
