The old moor RSPB site, is set on what was once a very large colliery site, Over the many years since it was created it has become a fantastic refuge for all types of birds, there are a number of lakes which attract a large number of water birds. The centre has a good amount of car parking space, and... More

To be honest, the main reason for our visit was to buy some bird food from the well stocked shop and to have lunch in the cafe. The weather was changeable, rain and wind and then grey and overcast, so a walk on the reserve was not an option. Having had a quick look in the shop we had lunch,... More

Hi Bob, This is a great review but I think it might be for Old Moor Tavern. We are RSPB Old Moor nature reserve - just up the road a bit from the pub. We too do food so if you ever fancy a lovely Sunday roast dinner please give us a go. Best wishes Liane More

First time visit, was quite impressed. Obviously plenty of scenery, beautiful marshlands, lots of ground to cover, with a number of hides to use. Also had lunch in their cafe, good quality at reasonable prices. Will definitely visit again.

We regularly visit Barnsley to call on elderly relatives. We tend to visit between 10.00 and 15.00 when they are at their best. We would like to walk round this excellent reserve in the early morning. First this fits with our visiting and second it is the best time for birdwatching. However, it is not to be because there is... More

First was the excellent play area - so we had a climb and a swing and took photos through the huge owl. Lovely sculpture made from willow branches and a raised pond safe for the little ones. Then on to the reserve proper - and the family hide - prefect for youngsters to see the main scrape and its waders... More

Lovely walk around the marshland and lakes with lots of hides to stop at along the way. Plenty of benches dotted around and lots of posters in the hides for easy identification of most common birds. You can hire binoculars from the shop for a small fee. The cafe is good offering plenty of snacks and lunches. The cakes are... More

This is one of my favourite places- lovely nature reserve, lots of interesting nature walks and a great cafe/shop. I've been a few times with my 3 year old niece and she loves it too!

Ok, nothing special. Came here with my daughter and baby. The lady at the entrance was friendly, however spent a lot of time trying to get us to sign up to a pass for rspb. There's a shop as you go in, which is extremely overpriced. I mean £30 for a bird box, come on.... the woman on the door... More

A decent way to spend the afternoon. There's a decent children's play area. My daughter enjoyed pond dipping for insects. Overall it's a nice walk and the staff are very friendly.
