About
Discover Strawberry Hill House, Horace Walpole’s magnificent 18th century ’little gothic castle’. Set back from the River Thames in Twickenham, it has captivated visitors for over 250 years. This enchanting House & Garden inspired Walpole to write the first ever gothic novel, ‘The Castle of Otranto’ and today, is internationally famous as Britain’s finest example of domestic Georgian Gothic revival architecture.

    Amazing
Amazing place. When for a quick look round after visiting the Royal Windsor Horse Show, and fell in love. It’s quirky, fascinating, totally over the top and even slightly tacky. But it’s so interesting and the volunteers guides have such a genuine passion for the place it’s infectious.

    Ravishing house with entralling guides!
A simply superb venue! Utterly ravishing interiors, charming gardens and the best guides of any historic house I have visited! I was blown away at the erudition of the guides, their depth of the knowledge and the wonderful stories they told about everything to do with the house - even the characters in the portraits! Highly recommended.

Highly recommend visiting this wonderful house.
We visited Strawberry Hill House on the spur of the moment whilst spending a few days in London. Absolutely recommend this wonderful house! As well as loving the very unexpected architecture, interior design and restoration work, what made our visit even more enjoyable was hearing the historical information from the volunteer guides. They were all so knowledgeable and friendly. We also enjoyed a good lunch in the very pleasant café. A lovely place to visit!

Only if you have seen everything else
If you are visiting London or the rest of the UK, there are many fascinating sites that would make your trip worthwile. Strawberry Hill House, even though it has its charms, isn’t one of them. The staff are local volunteers who are simply lovely and endearing. They are the best part of the experience. Additionally, there are are three rooms that would impress anyone, each one unique. However the rest of the house itself is dilapidated and the art is borrowed or simply not genuine. It is a nice visit, if you have plenty time on your hands. If you have only three days in London, I would suggest going somewhere else (like Hampton Court).

    A hidden gem
Our favourite part of this place was the fact that most rooms were empty. This does allow people to walk about more and not be marked off in a tiny space looking across the room. This way, you can move right up to the detailed mantles and windows covered in stained glass. An asset to the experience that people would complain about but shouldn’t. There was a staff member in most rooms to explain the amazing features and reasoning behind its creation. The colours and textured wall coverings in the rooms was incredible. I spent most of the time staring and saying “wow”. The grounds around the hill house are simple but the cascade of crocuses arising from the earth in a pattern shows the impeccable detail they preserve here. The ladies in the reception area were sooooo lovely. A great way to start and end the tour /sightseeing experience! A fluke to find this place but I recommend to anyone. I’ll go again for sure !

    A Gothic Wonder in Twickenham
A wonderful early Spring Sunday outing! We are Americans living in London. We met up with British friends and their teenage daughter at Strawberry Hill House and Gardens. I had reserved tickets online. Hubby and I arrived early and had a coffee at the cafe around the back of the house. We looked out on the garden. It was too early in the season to expect much from the garden, but there were plenty of crocus in sight. Ultimately, our group entered through the gift shop which had beautiful cards, some hand made textile jewelry, books, ceramics, and some lovely children’s3D books. The Eighteenth Century Gothic Style House has been nearly fully restored with wood interiors and wall coverings that are either original to the house or faithfully historic reproductions. It’s a small house in terms of country homes in England go. But it is quite a jewel box of a place. Docents are available in every room. They are full of interesting and unusual facts about the interiors and about Horace Walpole, the “Man of Letters” whose fascination with all things Gothic turned the house into an architectural curiosity. Not being plugged into an audio tour made this a very pleasurable time. We chatted with docents and visitors alike. The volunteers in the shop were gracious and enthusiastic, and we even learned about the House’s volunteer sewing bee from a woman quilting an English style quilt in one of the upstairs rooms set up for that purpose. Although there are not many original furnishings nor paintings in the house, the interiors are spectacular, and reproductions are near enough to originals to fool the eye and complete the original intent of the owner-collector. To top off our visit, we walked down the road to La Dolce Vita, a Roman Italian restaurant with homemade pasta that was out of this world!

    Interesting and bizarre place.
Decided to visit somewhere new and came across this place. Really good afternoon out. Unusual and bizarre place with a fascinating history. Guides in the rooms were excellent and really knowledgeable. It made the visit as they told interesting stories about the owner. Cafe was nice too and had a lovely hot chocolate. Good amount of parking.

A jewel box of a house
We took a walk to Strawberry Hill from near Richmond park. We'd perhaps overestimated the walk but it was well worth it. We were running late for our booked time but the staff said they were very relaxed about the timings. Although it's not a massive house every room is different and the curators in the rooms told us some of the stories of the place.

    Stunning Hidden Gem
Absolutely loved our visit to Strawberry Hill. Fascinating history of this incredible gothic revival style building. Beautifully restored and with a great team of enthusiastic and knowledgeable volunteers who really bring the history to life. The gardens were lovely too and the cafe was value for money good food. A real hidden gem that’s well worth a visit.

    Unique property, quite extraordinary
Strawberry Hill House is less than 10-mins walk from Strawberry Hill Station with a half hourly service from Richmond where we were staying (Waterloo from London). There is a car park, or you can walk along the river from Twickenham. You have to visit to understand how unique this Gothic House is. The room staff were engaging and knowledgeable. The art is on loan from the Dulwich Gallery and is beautifully clean. The Gallery is only surpassed by the Holbein Room. The cafe is small but offers bacon or sausage baguettes, or cream tea - what a dilemma. I’m so pleased we made the effort - there is nothing comparable. We did not walk the grounds.

A group of 20 of us came for a special guided tour which lasted a good 90 minutes. There is an awful lot to take in by way of history and decor, much of it being very impressive and somewhat over the top. This house is an unexpected delight if you haven't been before.

A very interesting and historically important building, very well presented. Exceptional stewards in all the rooms - enthusiastic and very well informed. Enjoyed a coffee and a piece of cake in the nice little cafe too.

We visited as a completely spontaneous trip after having time spare from visiting Hampton Court Palace. Honestly, I enjoyed this more! I did Gothic literature at university and read Castle of Otranto then. For years, I've wanted to visit and it was beyond my expectations. Gorgeous architecture, lovely Tolkien vibes. The volunteers were all highly skilled, really friendly atmosphere. It only took 30mins to go around because we visited at the end of the day, but truly inspirational and glad we did it!

i have been waiting since i read about the possibility of it opening to go . I am so glad I did. He was obviously a one off, but set so many ideas and styles in motion, and so early from the art historical point of view, .
To be ' a man of feeling' ; ( sentiare ) , would have meant to the 18th century ear to be a man of educated senseability, as opposed to just satisfying every whim and carnal longing. (cf later used by Jane Austen as a play in and on her title "sense and senseability " ).
I was saddened by Tia maria mum 5's comments , good staff are hard to get ; I rather got the impression that the cafe dining was being run on a franchise ; the staff seemed to exhibit the spirit that saw us through the blitz, But the public seemed unaware of what a nuisance they were making of themselves by being thirsty and hungry.
best wishes! Heritage is a hard graft.

The best thing about the visit was the team of volunteer guides. They were all knowledgeable and helpful, and made our visit very interesting. The house itself is unusual, there are not many 18th Century Gothic Revival places around. Nicely restored with realistic touches, such as hand made wallpaper with "joins" to replicate the original. Also nice grounds where we had a pleasant picnic lunch. We are very pleased we made the trip.

Bowled over by the enthusiastic volunteers for this Gothic splendour in Twickenham. More style than substance in the house but better for this. An eccentric folly. Would have given 5 stars if it wasn't for the moody service in the cafe. Got completely the wrong food and the staff made no effort to clear the cluttered tables.

We visited the cafe for lunch which was spoilt by the staff who were, in my view, very rude, unhelpful and unprofessional. The venue itself has lovely gardens and if it wasn’t for the rudeness of the ladies in the cafe would have been enjoyable

Disappointing. Like a previous poster we also had a run-in with rude, unhelpful staff at the cafe, which soured our day out at Strawberry Hill before it had even begun. The house itself is weird and rather OTT in its Gothic theme. I guess if Gothic revival is your thing you will be right at home, but to us it felt rather like a Disney castle. Added to which there is really very little indeed to see - the place is strangely empty. Despite this there are a plethora of volunteers who, though I'm sure they mean well, literally harangue you with their crib sheet of info, even when you've clearly said you wish to simply browse around on your own - by far my preferred way to see a stately home. Really there is no reason at all to bother with Strawberry Hill. You are in London! Go to see Ham House, Chiswick House or Syon House, all close by and far better. Or just go into central London and be properly blown away.

We are sorry to hear that you did not enjoy your visit to Strawberry Hill House. The house is as unique and quirky as its creator and whilst it's not to everyone's taste, it is internationally renowned as one of the finest examples of Gothic Revival architecture.    As an independent charity the Trust works tirelessly to raise the funds to keep the house open, bring back some of the collection and provide an interesting experience for visitors. We are so grateful to have the support of our Volunteers to not only guide the rooms, but also to share stories about Horace Walpole, the House and our growing collection.    We are currently reviewing the external café provision and have passed on your comments. Please contact us at events@strawberryhillhouse.org.uk for a complimentary visit at this time. With thanks and best wishes, The Strawberry Hill House team.

This is a fascinating gem of a house - the home of Horace Walpole, who was clearly quite a collector. Lots of rooms each with its own character and style. The original Renaissance stained glass is worth the entry fee alone - it is magnificent.
The guides are knowledgeable, friendly and approachable and clearly enthusiasts.
There is a small cafe where the food we sampled was freshly made, delicious and good value - and a cracking cup of tea; where the staff are friendly, efficient and clearly know what they are doing.
A small shop sells a good selection of cards, books etc., and non of the usual overpriced tat usually on offer. The weather wasn't conducive to walking outside so a return visit is necessary - happily.

Did the guided tour on the last Sunday of the month with a very knowledgeable guide. Amazing house with so many little side rooms and passages. Really well restored. Lots of history including the origins of the gothic novel. Large grounds with a shell seat & summer house. Shop has some interesting items. We had a tea & coffee there but wouldn't recommend, both were a bit tasteless.
