Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

Friday 25 August 2023, My husband and I went to visit ‘The Marconi Museum’ at Poldu Cove. This site is famous as the location of Poldhu Wireless Station, Guglielmo Marconi’s transmitter for the first transatlantic radio signal. In 1899 the Royal Navy had purchased three radios for their ships and several merchant ships followed suit. It was common belief that radio waves would travel around the earth's curvature but could only travel in straight lines. Marconi was determined to disprove this.

The station’s fifty acre plot was bought in 1900 and construction work ran from October 1900 to January 1901, designed by Marconi's senior engineer, R N Vyvyan, whilst Professor John Ambrose Fleming designed the transmitter. The original 20 mast circular cone shaped aerial was destroyed in a storm on 17 September 1901. For Marconi’s experiments a temporary installation of two 200 foot masts with a fan shaped aerial was used. The transmitter operated with a power of roughly 13 kW and a wavelength usually estimated at 366 metres.

Marconi and two assistants travelled to Newfoundland in December 1901 and on 12 December 1901 Guglielmo Marconi and his colleagues received an extremely short signal from Poldhu (three dots representing the code letter 's') whilst listening in at Signal Hill, St John's, Newfoundland and history was made.

SADLY THE WEBSITE INFORMATION WAS WRONG ON SEVERAL SITES, IT SAID IT WAS OPEN THE DAY WE WENT BUT IT WAS CLOSED.

Several other people came whist we were there who were also doomed to be disappointed as we were.

We did manage to walk around the grounds and look at the Marconi Memorial which was interesting. However, we would have like to visit The Marconi Centre.

A very small museum situated at Poldhu Cove. The staff there are all volunteers and provide a plethora of information regarding Marconi. It is well worth a visit. There are no entrance fees but they do ask for donations to try to keep the museum open.

The museum is staffed by volunteers and not always open but deserves to be better known. Lots of interest here, not just to the amateur radio buffs but also to laymen like me.
The volunteers were a friendly bunch.
Spectacular views from the Marconi monument on the cliffs.

My husband visited the Marconi Centre and thoroughly enjoyed it. He has worked in telecoms for approximately 30 years so has a keen interest. He found the video a great overview and then Terry one of the volunteers a fountain of knowledge for further information. Don’t miss this whilst you’re staying around this area as it is well worth a visit and a worthy organisation to support.

We visited the Marconi centre on the way back form the Lizard and are really glad we did. The volunteers are extremely knowledgeable and are a real asset to this place. The little video is great at giving a brief overview of the history of this place and sets you up to investigate the centre. This is a real gem and not to be missed - our teenage son really enjoyed it too.

I walked up alone to the buildings and looked over at the replacement towers , read the notice boards and gazed at the monument over the fields . I found it fascinating but may not be for everyone.
