I decided to take the offer to double up on the group lessons and I can honestly say they were brilliant, the instructors did a great job of making sure everyone was safe and getting the best out of the lessons. We did some safety and technique learning on the beach but it wasn't long until we were in the water having fun and catching waves.
I was really impressed with the amount of progress I made!
I obviously caught the bug because I decided to book a one on one the next day with Jamie Ware. This was a step up again from the group sessions, Jamie's enthusiasm, experience, knowledge and constant feedback on what I needed to do (and not do) meant that I improved really quickly.
I can't recommend Breakers surf school highly enough, all the staff were really friendly, and approachable. Next time I'm back in St Agnes I'll be booking some more lessons!
Cheers.

Tom and the team at Breakers are a lovely bunch and great at what they do. This is the fourth summer our child has surfed with them (via the Kids' Club) and this year we added a couple of private lessons for ourselves too. Having body-boarded for a few years, surfing was brilliant fun. Tom, Tristan, Hank and all of the coaches are totally focused on everyone enjoying themselves and giving positive, encouraging feedback. I can't recommend them highly enough.

When booking or going to a lesson, it's worth remembering that there is no mobile reception down in the cove, so they may not be able to deal with last-minute messages...best just to arrive in plenty of time for your session.

Tom and Tristan are amazing teachers. We have had quite a few lessons with them and during the lessons have improved a lot, becoming more confident in the water and on the surf board. They have taught us how to successfully stand up, turn and we are getting more confident in the green water on smaller boards and it’s been very fulfilling to see the progression. Highly recommend and will 100% be coming back :)

Tristan and I love having you both back every year and are so proud of the progress you have both made. That last session was brilliant both of you trimming across the unbroken waves on the performance surfboards. Well done and thanks.

Joe the instructor was very thorough with his warm up and explanation of the waves and training. It was excellent. He was friendly and very patient with my son who has quite a short attention span like most 8 year olds!! My son had a great time. He got a bit tired as he’s young but my husband kept at it. It was just a shame that there was so much seaweed in the water. If it hadn’t been for that I’m sure they would have both managed to stand up. My son had a go later that afternoon at another beach with a friend. He remembered everything Joe taught him that morning and managed to stand up and surf about 4 times! So it was well worth it! I recommend if you want to have a go at surfing to definitely give Breakers a try, they’re fantastic!

Two teenage daughters who had never surfed before made great progress in a two hour lesson. An attentive & encouraging instructor got them in the water asap giving them enough time and space to explore techniques whilst being there for tips, advice & one to one instruction as required. Really impressed & the girls have totally got the bug!!

Fantastic for first time surfers. Perfect amount of time and really helpful coach Tristan made it fun and safe. We would definitely come again if we ever visit this area and would strongly recommend if you want to try surfing.

I brought a block of 10 sessions from July for my 9 year old after he received a session for his birthday in June from his friend.
He absolutely loves his surf lessons, Tom is so knowledgeable and was able to keep the kids engaged at all times and the other instructors were great too. They taught the kids well and even broke the session down in to sections to enable the kids to learn each stage of surfing at a time. My son was even standing at his first lesson. As his sessions moved on each week he'd learn something new. I particularly liked the way they taught the kids about the sea, including rip tides etc as every day the sea is different. Even I have got involved in surfing as I've hired boards each week and it really is so much fun. I have since brought another block of sessions, as my son enjoyed it that much.
I would highly recommend Tom at Breakers time and time again. Perfect for everyone of all ages. Thank you Tom

We were excited to have booked a three person one to one lesson for a morning of our holiday.

The company sent us an automated confirmation of our booking and telling us to meet at Reppers car park.

The day before we had not heard when we were to meet Tom so we contacted him.

We had a reply stating there had been a problem with the booking but they could fit us in.

We turned up at Porthtowan early and did not have the friendliest of greetings by Tom. He said there had been a problem with our booking.

We still presumed we would get a three person one to one lesson with him. We had booked it for our 6 year old, 9 year old and my wife.

The kids had been very excited about the lesson.

We were disappointed to see Tom head off with another person for their one to one lesson. We were put in a group lesson with 2 other older lads who had several days of surfing under their belts and Tristan the instructor.

It seemed like Tom didn’t really care about his messing up of our booking and spent not one moment checking if we were doing ok or even trying to give some coaching. He focused exclusively on coaching the girl and took no responsibility for the mess up.

Tristan did his best Under the circumstances but Tom let us down. My youngest loved the surfing thanks to my wife and myself helping her in the water and sadly my son was put off and didn’t enjoy it.

At the end Tom said he would refund us and I am awaiting the money into my account.

I would say that if Tom had showed some more compassion and help during our lesson then this review would have reflected that. Tristan tried his best but with 2 teenagers and 2 young children and my wife in the water to teach surfing he was overstretched. Luckily I could help my own kids in the water.

Also I would suggest changing your booking software as it obviously let us and you down but you didn’t seem to fussed about that.

Hello Matt, Thank you for taking the time to review our surf school and I would like to reiterate the sincere apologise I made at the time for the software error that lead to you having to share your surf lesson with two others I would recommend voicing concerns with companies at the time to help clear up any misunderstandings. I am glad you received the confirmation email telling you where and when to meet, but was confused to see it as part of the complaint, so am not sure how to address that. We have always found the system works well and customers know where and when to meet us. I am sorry you took my greeting to be unfriendly, I was actually very sorry and distressed about the mix up. As explained at the time over the phone, two extra people had accidentally been booked in with you due to a software error and that you would receive a full refund as well as the lesson, so am confused that you were still expecting a private lesson. I reported the error to the company running the booking system and they have apologised and corrected the fault so that a lesson becomes unavailable as soon as someone books a private session in it. I share your disappointment that I was not able to provide you the one to one session but instead had to see to another customer and provide her with the session she had booked. Me focusing exclusively on the girl in my lesson was not a sign that I did not care about the messing up of the booking, but that I focus on the students in my class, confident in the ability of my coaches. You are right it was lucky you were able to help one of your children in the water. It is a requirement in group lessons as I said at the time, children under ten years old need an adult available to go in the water to help them with the surfboard if required. This is standard practice, but I am surprised you both needed to help your youngest in the water at the same time, please clarify this or retract it as I do not want customers thinking it is normal for a child to need two adults in the water with them. Having worked with Tristan for many years now, I know he can manage a group of five people and I would have come straight over had he been overstretched, I observed him keeping the whole group safe and providing regular feedback to the whole group. I can in my professional opinion say without question on that day Tristan was not overstretched by 5 people. The maximum allowed in a group is 8 people per instructor, as a surf school we set further restriction of maximum at 5 for mixed ability groups. I was happy to be able to offer you not only a full refund but also a free lesson to compensate for the faulty booking system but disappointed that this was not enough. The refund was made on the day of the lesson so I am concerned that you still have not received it and surprised you have not been in touch to ask about it. Please get in touch and reply to my email regarding the refund. Yes the booking software let us both down and has now been fixed. Your interpretation of how I felt about this to this seems to be the main complaint so I will be careful to make sure I make that more clear next time. I look forward to hearing from you regarding corrections to this review and the refund. Many thanks, Tom, breakerssurflessons@gmail.com

I did a SUP session and everything was very well organised, they dealt well with the fact that I got my meeting up instructions wrong and messed up the start.
Felt in safe hands all the time with our very knowledgeable and patient instructor, everything was very clear in our group of mixed abilities, including children - our instructor was particularly good with the kids. An altogether great experience.

After some initial problems using the booking system we went on to have a wonderful couple of days surfing at St Agnes. We found it much easier to send our requests by email for what we were wanting to hire and pay via invoice. We had a surf lesson from Tom who was very helpful on where to improve and get the most out of our time whilst there. Having the hire hut in the car park made it easy to pick up the equipment and dropping off at the end of the day. Thank you for a great time.
