Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

Opened on ANZAC day in 1923 is this High School...built by the town to honour the commitment made by the locals to World War 1. According to signage the town's memorial service for ANZAC day is held at the school each year. The school houses honour rolls for all of the twentieth century conflicts.

This school is stunning... The old building is just tasteful and fits the landscape of Hay. I wandered into the school area after hours to take photos... curiosity drew me closer to see if I could see into the hallways. Suddenly there was a man there asking me what I was doing. I was a bit embarrassed but just stuttered that I was taking photos of the beautiful building and thought I might be able to see a bit more if I looked through the windows.

Very kindly he invited me in. Initially I thought that this was a security guard for the school, because I was aware that school had ended for the term that day. He was very informative and it felt like I had a personal guide. I eventually worked up the courage to ask who he was and it turns out that the current Principal was showing me around. It was a very gracious gesture on his behalf which I greatly appreciated. The information is like a museum, but it's the whole experience of visiting a school that is clearly respectfully remembering our history that is what makes this a stand out.

A really personalised and well researched display. What a mighty contribution from a small town to Australia’s WW1 contribution. So much to admire in these young men and their families, so sad and confronting to see what war does.

Hay War Memorial High School is definitely worth a visit if you're in Hay. It was opened in 1923 as the town's war memorial, but it does more than simply record the names of those who served and those who died. Within it is a museum of photographs, medals, uniforms, letters and diaries in a room dominated by an enormous Honour Board with the names of Hay District Volunteers of WWI.

Most moving are the stories of the servicemen, giving details of their lives before and (only in some cases) after the war. The school's motto is "Pro tanto quid retribuamus" (in return for so much, what shall we give?), a question this remarkable school forces us to consider.

This is definitely worth the time to visit. For a small town Hay has given so much to our country. Great way to break up your trip if passing through.

What a great little set up and all for a small donation towards upkeep. I was looking up my grandfathers history and searching other relatives stories. Found him on the huge big Hay war service Roll of Honour board and also a stand alone history board for another relative plus sadly, some on the casualty Roll of Honour. Pretty moving when you encounter some long lost fragment of your ancestors life ! The whole set up is well done & lovingly maintained for future generations to learn.

If you are interested in military history this a must visit. The school serves as a memorial to the Great War, built in 1923 and contains a very emotive interesting museum telling stories of local men who served mainly in World War 1. Having visited many War museums we were interested to see that this one also featured the descendants of the soldiers. There are lots of individual stories, relics and medals including a Military Medal. The museum is very well presented and has some closed cupboards and drawers which you are invited to open to view the contents. Entry is $3 pp donation and you probably need about an hour. We bought some very nice bookmarks to take home as gifts.

This old school has so much to show people, the information is so well displayed and is so easy for people to wander around and learn about local facts, from years gone by.

I was told that this is the only War Memorial High School in the Southern Hemisphere. The museum is beautifully set up, interesting and a wonderful history of Hay.

There are some interesting displays here. If you're into Australian and or military history it is worth a visit. Lots of reading to do but you probably wouldn't need more than an hour. The reception staff are very friendly.

My wife & I were fortunate to have the Chairman of the Dunera Museum to show us around the memorial area of the school. Not until it was explained to us did we realise that that the school is a living memorial to those who died in battle.
Anyone can view the entrance area, which contains various memorials and records of servicemen from Hay who fought for Australia.
It is a pity that other schools couldn’t visit to see how the pupils protect their own school from graffiti and mindless damage. Make a point of visiting this school.
