I live adjacent to a section of the Three Rivers Heritage Trail and am an almost daily user as a bicyclist. Most of the trail remains safe and I highly recommend its use. However. a section between 9th and 31st streets has become a trouble spot to be avoided. Today there are more than 30 campsites set up by homeless men many of which are on the berm of the trail. The sites are strewn with garbage, and the occupants can be obstacles to trail users. Appeals are being made to city government. In the mean time if you are riding or hiking on the trail I strongly advise you to detour across either the 9th or 31st street bridges and travel the mile between the two structures on Penn Ave or other city streets. Then rejoin the trail at either end.

We walked parts of both sides of the trail - south side located on the city side and the north side located on the PNC Park side. It’s flat and some areas have homeless tents, but it wasn’t an issue. Do be aware if you are on the north side and wish to cross over to the city side, know which bridges you can cross or it could be a very long walk to cross over. No guardrails either side. The north side between PNC Park and the island is pretty much covered with bushes/trees, so a view of the river is minimal. Lots of walkers and cyclists use these trails.

I arrived in Pittsburg on a Monday afternoon by car. I brought my bike so I could ride the Three Rivers Trail specifically. After getting a bit lost in downtown I found my way to Point State Park and parked along the street amongst a bunch of other vehicles. There was curbside parking via the kiosk but trying to enter my Md license plate number didn't work. A passerby said don't worry about it, that he always parked there and never paid. I was leery but with little choice other than to keep searching for parking, I did just that. My recommendation is to research and have a plan for parking prior to going. The trail from downtown is pretty nice for about a 5 or 6 mile radius, but then in most directions just beyond it becomes a section of homeless tents pitched literally right along the trail. It gets a little trashy and makes you think twice about continuing, but if you stay the course, you soon exit the tents, and the trail resumes in a suburban wooded atmosphere. And I had no issues at all and no one I saw, whether folks walking their dogs, joggers or other bicyclists seemed deterred by the area with the tents. The trail is accessed by using certain bridges to get to opposite sides of the rivers and on this particular Monday wasn't very hard to navigate, but I'm sure on a beautiful wkend if could get difficult to maneuver a bike on these overpasses with lots of pedestrians. All in all, it was a good experience and I wish I had planned my experience a little better which I'm sure would have made it all the more enjoyable. So definitely go but do your homework beforehand.

The boaters parking areas do not like bicyclists, runners, dog walkers or hikers. I parked in a boat lot my vehicle was vandalized. I also have seen MANY bicyclists' way over the speed limit of 15mph. Some homeless people also camping along this trail.

Enjoyed a walk along the North Shore - Three Rivers Heritage Trail during a visit to Pittsburgh in February 2023. It was chilly and cloudy during my trek along the trail. Beautiful riverfront area with many spots along the trail to take in fantastic views of the Allegheny River, Ohio River and Monongahela River. Great views of Pittsburgh's impressive bridges, landmarks, PNC Park and Acrisure Stadium (Heinz Field).

As a native Pittsburgher, this is one of our family's favorite things to do. We always start the trail from Washington's landing (Herr's Island) and ride towards the Point. Parking on the island is free and usually available. The trail is on the north side of the river (across from the city). The ride is about 2.5 miles long and on mostly flat terrain, therefore easy. The trail is dedicated to bikers and walkers and can get crowded on a beautiful weekend day but it's worth it to give it a go. With a constant view of the city skyline as you ride on the trail, it beckons you on toward other sights such as the three sisters' bridges, the Alcoa bldg. and the David Lawrence convention Ctr., the first LEED certified convention center in N. America and one of the first in the world. As the city passes by across the river, you come to the Point and a perfect place for pictures. You can also hop off your bike and walk up to PNC Park and Heinz Field for a look, or continue on toward the Carnegie Science Ctr. At this point you can either head back up the river and home or cross the river, via the bike trail on the Fort Duquesne Bridge, and bike to the Point and fountain and/or other places downtown. Unfortunately, there are no bike rental places on Herr's island so you need your own bike. This a a wonderful way to spend a 1/2 day or day seeing Pittsburgh. Highly recommend!

My wife and I were in Pittsburgh for the weekend for a Penguin's game. We decided to see the sights along the Heritage River Trail. We strolled along both sides of the river along the trail. The North side was very nice. The trail passes by PNC park, Heinz Field, and the Casino. A very nice war memorial, and several other statues and memorials are also along the route. A great view of the Pittsburgh skyline and the park at the confluence of the two rivers. The trail is wide, and well looked after. Plenty of room for all, although the trail was not busy when we were on it. It was a rainy, overcast day in November. A nice way to showcase the city.

Pittsburgh offers 17 miles of paved bike/walking/running trails along its 3 rivers. There is easy access from the North Side and South Side ( http://www.friendsoftheriverfront.org/files/heritage_trail.html), and biking or walking the trail allows one to really appreciate what a beautiful and unique city Pittsburgh is. The North Side trail takes one past the casino, stadiums, and war memorials, and the South Side trail passes Suburban Station and includes a ride/walk over the Hot Iron Bridge. These are just a few of the highlights. Along the route are signs pointing out significant historical sites, and restaurants (the Hofbrauhaus being a biker favorite). The trail is fine for young kids learning to ride, and during summer months, there are 2 bike rental locations. http://www.bikepittsburgh.com/?page_id=910

We biked several portions of the trail and had a good time. We biked from the PNC Park died of the river over the bridge to the bike trail to maneuver through the city. It was a little rough in spots but overall In good condition.

I run on some part of this trial system a minimum of three days per week, so I can say with authority that it is one of the best center city trail system around. It is easy to access from many locations. It is lighted, clean and relatively safe for a major urban area. If you have more time and a bike, either your own or a rental, then you can expand your interaction by riding across the Hot Metal Bridge into Southside where you can get a coffee or lunch. Station Square is not much further away, again by river trail. You can cross the river again and ride around Heinz Field and PNC Park, again on sidewalks. Wonderful experience that will never get old.
