Drinks, Music, Board Games, and Art Set Mixtape Apart
Aug 2018 • Friends
Where do you go for a good drink in Pittsburgh, PA? I learned from my recent beer and coffee tour of the area, in support of my beer blog Great Beer Now, that Pittsburgh overflows with opportunities for adult drinking action. And one of the many cool places to kick back with drink in hand is Mixtape Caffeine and Cocktails.

Mixtape has a comfortable atmosphere, featuring couches and other seating that make you feel right at home. The walls feature artwork and some of it is even listed for sale, so if you find a painting you would love to have in your own home, there is a chance it could be yours, for a price. If you want to play a classic board game while you drink, you can do that, too. Features like these that place Mixtape in a class by itself.

Live music often accompanies a visit to Mixtape. I was here earlier in the day, when it was a little quieter, and I immediately took a liking to the atmosphere and cocktail lounge vibe. Many of the drinks served at Mixtape are named after well- known songs/bands, so music is definitely the theme you remember when you visit. And if you’re not in the mood for a cocktail but would rather drink beer, don’t worry- in addition to the specialty and classic cocktails, they also serve about 40 or so different beers. No matter what taste you might be craving, Mixtape has a drink to match your mood.

One other interesting thing to note about Mixtape is that the establishment does not allow tipping. They have signs to remind guests that tips are not permitted and aren’t necessary because they pay their employees well enough that they can make a living. This is an added plus, for certain. I like any place that shows this level of caring toward their employees.

Pittsburgh is a city with many opportunities for booze. If you’re looking for a place where you can lounge in a comfy chair and sip on your favorite adult or other beverage, Mixtape makes a good choice. It’s got most everything you would want in a cocktail lounge and makes for a nice means to wind down a busy day.

I loved it the minute I walked in! Great vibe, supports local artists, as well as over-the-top beverages and bagel sandwiches. A must visit!

Boozy Brunch!
Nov 2015 • Couples
I was last saturday for brunch. We tried some plates, muffin sandwich, granola yogurt, bloody mary, lavender cocktail, etc. Everything was very healthy and excellent!
Then service was super nice!!
And last but not least, at very good prices! They even do not accept tips!
A very nice and trendy place. I want to try that place now on an evening with the DJ or concert.

A New Place That Doesn't Have It's Feet Yet.
Nov 2015 • Solo
THE GOODS:
* Cool décor.
* Intimate space, created from the deep row house architecture. Tables, lounge areas, etc. are near the dance area. (Oh, wait. Is there a dance area? In effect, you dance wherever.)
* Diverse menu with different items.
* Friendly staff. They add to the warmth of the place with their smiles and willingness to chat a bit.
* The music. I liked what I heard when I was there. Danceable and yet not intrusive if you are chilling with friends in the lounge area. Not sure if the music is always this way.

THE BADS:
* The service. They are so busy being friendly, you can forget service. I went in twice when they were slow (maybe 10 people in the place) and eventually left each time without being served. The second time I even pointedly said to the (apparent) server, "I want to be served by you." Sure!" she responded, and I ended up with menus. 20 minutes later, no one had come to take the order.
* Drinks and food looked good by menu descriptions, but I can't tell you whether they were any good. See point above.
* If you want a discreet space for chatting with friends, forget it if there is dancing or a crowd. What can be intimate (the whole place as dance) can also be off-putting if you are looking to lounge.
* The "LOVE" sign. It's a good fit artistically for the place, but too bright. At night it shines on the front third of the place like a spotlight. I'd suggest lower wattage bulbs that create a glow.

THE CONCLUSION:
Two times with no service, a month into operations? There are lots of other places to check out. Maybe I'll check in again in a year.

We had not noticed that you had left us this identical review on multiple platforms. We hope that you have had the chance to give us another visit! Attached is our 11/8/15 response: Thank you for your review! We always love feedback, and will be sure to discuss your review during our next team meeting. If you were in for Unblurred (First Friday on Penn), we keep the LOVE sign illuminated because it's for sale as part of our current exhibit. We have also noticed it's a bit bright. Since we can't change any of the artist's features (bulbs included), we normally turn the light off during our evening hours. We also keep our local music merchandise tables displayed in our dance floor in the spirit of the local art event. During our standard Dance Lounge on Saturdays, this area is cleared to create the dance floor. I'm very sorry to hear that you haven't had the opportunity to try any of our food or drinks, though. It sounds like you came in during bar operations, but, for both our café and our bar, we operate as a fast-casual joint. Our bar staff will provide limited cocktail service, when necessary, to increase efficiency and keep wait times minimal at the bar, but we don't currently staff any servers. Orders must be placed at the bar. I apologize for any confusion. If you decide to give us another try, send me a private message with your name, and I'll make sure the staff knows that your first drink is on the house.
