About
The Pat Conroy Literary Center educates and inspires a community of readers, writers, and teachers in and beyond our home in the South Carolina lowcountry. In honor of our namesake, one of America's best-loved writers and truth-tellers, the Conroy Center continues Pat Conroy's courageous and generous-hearted legacy as a teacher, mentor, advocate, and friend to storytellers of every kind. The nonprofit Conroy Center is South Carolina's first affiliate of the American Writers Museum and second American Library Association United for Libraries Literary Landmark. Voted as Favorite Local Museum in the 2019 Eat Stay Play Beaufort "Best of Beaufort" Awards, the Conroy Center is also winner of the 2019 Civitas Award for Tourism Leadership, presented by the Beaufort Regional Chamber of Commerce.

    Pat Conroy Literacy Center
Jonathon spoke at length about his friend, Pat Conroy, sharing interesting stories of their time together. He was very knowledgeable and they shared a love of teaching (and learning). The museum part was complete and well designed.

    Wonderful Literary Experience
I have read several of Pat Conroy’s books and enjoyed them immensely. Visiting the Literary Center provided a connection to the writer that I didn’t expect. I learned so much about what motivated him and how circumstances brought him to writing about his experiences of growing up in the SC low country.

The Pat Conroy Literary Center was a great place to visit. Lots of Pat;'s personal items are on display, they have books and Pat Conroy souvenirs for sale at reasonable prices, and the staff there were very friendly and very helpful. If you like to read and you're a fan of Pat Conroy, you must visit!

    A Literary Legacy
A few blocks away from downtown is a gem for Pat Conroy fans. It is a Museum and Literacy Center with lots of his artifacts, notes, memorabilia and books. Conroy adopted Beaufort as his hometown and this Center honors him and his legacy

    Favorite Places
Pat Conroy is my favorite author. It was a joy to visit the center. The two ladies who were hosts were absolutely wonderful. One being Pat’s sister and the second a retired FBI agent turned author.

    Nice tribute to Pat Conroy
Small museum/literary center but a must if you are a Pat Conroy fan. The docents will give you a rather informative walkthrough of the center. Lots of photos and memorabilia from Pat and his family. Book store is well stocked with all of Pat's books and many other items.

Loved the Pat Conroy Literary Center.
We arrived 15 minutes before closing on Veterans Day, November 11th. We were met with the most friendly and gracious staff member who proceeded to give us a very enlightening tour of the center. We loved learning about Anthony Johnson, the mixed media artist and we will be following him in the future.

    A gem in Beaufort
My husband I visited the Pat Conroy Literary Center in November and we loved it! It is not only a moving tribute to Pat Conroy, but it is also a place to celebrate literature and the freedom to read. I would heartily recommend it.

A wonderful celebration of a beloved author
We knew we couldn't leave Beaufort without visiting this museum. It exceeded our expectations. There were all kinds of letters and mementos from Pat Conroy's life and his writing career. We attended an author lecture, and I even (a bonus!) got some great tips for promoting my own book. We gained more insight about the man and his craft.

Julie Becker on the Pat Conroy Literary Center
The Pat Conroy Library Center is interesting, unusual and informative on many levels. We stopped there partly because my dad, Steve Becker (also a novelist) had always spoken so highly of Pat Conroy. to see his books, his life and his experience teaching in the island communities was absolutely fascinating.

I have read, and reread, all of Mr. Conroy's books, so I was beyond excited to visit the museum and see the office here he wrote all of them, BY HAND, as well as some of his favorite books. I especially enjoyed the photos showing his time teaching on the island. The staff was full of interesting information. I recommend this very highly, even to those who may not yet have read his works. You will want to after visiting here!

We had a wonderful tour of the Pat Conroy Literary Center that gave us so much history and fun facts and information about Pat Conroy's books, early life, time as a teacher on the island, family life, marriage, etc. It was so fun to see all the books and mementos of his life. I have read almost all his books and being here just brought it all to life for me again and made me want to read the one book I haven't yet read, the Great Santini about his father.

I'd visited the Pat Conroy Literacy previously but this time chose to have a tour by a very knowledgeable docent. Make sure to visit the back room with the photographs from The Water is Wide. We learned about chef and Daufuskie Island native Sally Ann Robinson and a few days later met her at a Gullah Festival in Hilton Head. Please go!

We are both friends and fans of Pat Conroy. We were so impressed by the exhibits and welcomed by the docent, his dear sister. The exhibits span Pat’s childhood to his early teaching years at Dufuskie with never before seen photos. The exhibits bring the books to live! Highly recommend a visit. My husband plans to return, to take in a second time.

The literary center was amazing! So much to see - and all up close. The tour guide was awesome; a close relative of the author and a wealth of knowledge. It was my first visit to Beaufort and the literary center. What a lovely city with gracious residents. I am planning a future visit this year as I so enjoyed myself. A truly unique experience in a beautiful city with friendly residents. This place is a gem.

The folks who work here go out of their way to make people feel welcome. Everyone we encountered was so gracious. Many knew Pat personally and were more than happy to answer questions and share anecdotes. Loved seeing so many of Pat's personal items and family memorabilia. Learning about the center's events and all they do to support writers makes this the perfect tribute to a man who was devoted to writing and education. Just an absolute joy to visit.

Extremely interesting information. Not only about author but also much about area history. Also Mr Conroy’s work with school children as a young man. We met his sister and brother while there and were able to have them relate some of their experiences. Great place to stop in. Thank you.
