Unique Plantation - Intetesting Tabby Construction
Jan 2020 • Solo
First off, I'm biased. We moved to Dataw Island about 3 years ago. Then discovered the community has pro-actively worked to professionally preserve these Tabby Ruins. I fell in love with the history of the place and the family that built it. Second, this is a fascinating site with a nice museum next door that contains artifacts from and descriptions of the original plantation. Worth your time.

Access denied!

Security at the gate would not allow us access to see the ruins. We mentioned that this was on the National Historic register and he apologized and said that he was not allowed to let anyone in. Drove all the way out to the island. Waste of time!

The Sams Plantation Complex Tabby Ruins were the first Tabby Ruins my wife and I had ever seen when first coming to Beaufort. Dataw Residents should be proud of their Tabby Landmark.

Good insight into the history of Dataw Island
Mar 2016 • Couples
Attended a lecture and tour of the ruin site arranged by the Osher Life Long Learning Institute. Gated, planned golf club community of Dataw Island is gorgeous, and this site sits right between part of a golf course and their tennis courts.

The lecture was given in their brand new history center building, and outlined the history of this area and site over the last 12,000 years--from its original indian inhabitants to the Sams and other families and owners and their efforts to develop the island during the Colonial era through the Civil War and subsequent eras, and on up until the current day.

Informed lecturers, the ruins were right outside the door, and both served to give us a good impression of what life might have been like here a few hundred of years ago.

Ruins are very intersting, but are in a gated community, no public access
Feb 2016 • Couples
I think this attraction, while very interesting, should be removed from Trip Advisor because it is not accessible to the general public but only to residents or guests of the gated community of Dataw Island. That is why I gave it a rating of 3 instead of higher. That said, we learned a great deal about the plantation and about tabby architecture from the informational signage, which was very good. The ruins are in the midst of a very manicured golf course, which kind of detracts from the experience, but it was nonetheless well worth visiting. (We were guests at a nearby house on Dataw, which is how we were able to go to the ruins.)

Stopped at Gate, not allowed in
Sep 2015 • Family
I drove a bit out of my way after reading about these ruins. I was really excited to see them, but we were stopped at the security gate and not allowed to enter. A real disappointment that there is no public access.

You can almost hear the dance music from the past

These tabby ruins are some of the finest in the area & one of the only with a still intact roof on one of the out buildings. The self tour plaques are well diagramed & provide all the information for you to enjoy your stroll through the past. Bug spray is a good idea, too.

Up close and personal with tabby ruins
Apr 2015 • Family
It really is worth the side trip. Dataw Island isn't far off the beaten path and it's got a great golf course.

But really the Sams Plantation ruins is one of the few (perhaps only) chances to look at tabby construction up close and personal. It only takes a few minutes to walk around the complex and read the various signage pointing out each of the buildings functions. Then you can stroll along the waterfront and retire to the bar for a cocktail.
