Make this your first stop when visiting historic Bluffton, South Carolina....

Make this your first stop when visiting historic Bluffton, South Carolina. Whether you'd like to tour the house-museum, have questions about local history, need maps of the area, or just want to know where to have lunch while you're in town-- we would love to see you! The Heyward House was constructed circa 1841, and is one of only eight antebellum homes remaining in the Lowcountry coastal town of Bluffton, South Carolina. In 1998, the home was purchased by the Bluffton Historical Preservation Society and opened to the public for tours, field trips, and events. In addition to being a beautifully preserved house-museum, the Heyward House also acts as the official town Welcome Center, providing maps, information, menus, and more to visitors and residents. Because of its well-preserved condition, the Heyward House is now an Official Project of the Save America's Treasures Program, a public-private partnership between the White House Millennium Council and the National Trust for Historic Preservation. The home is open to the public for tours Monday - Friday: 10-5 and Saturday 10-4. Group tours and guided walking tours of the historic district are available with advanced reservations.

This was built as a summer home for a plantation owner. It wasn't very fancy but interesting. Good place to get recommendations on things to do in Buffington.

This pre-Civil War home also serves as the visitor center for Bluffton and tours are provided on the hour, although I was given a tour upon arrival at 1:30. The docent was extremely knowledgeable about the house and it's history, as well as the history of the time period in general. The home is not large but it is furnished... More

All visits to Bluffton should start here. The house is really preserved well. It feels like just what it is, an old house with lots of history. This is a good, honest house, with character. Many artifacts belonging to the family lend an authentic feel. Our Docent Kaitlin (please forgive my spelling) was very good, interesting, knowledgeable and pleasant. She... More

We were four of us and so we had the run of the place plus the curator was our guide. This interesting house with its unusual furnished rooms and the slave cabins in the back was very interesting.

If your visiting or live here and you want some great history on the low country there is no place better to learn. The exhibits are better than an antique mall and the volunteers love to share or history and answer your questions. If you did even like history in HS your find this interesting.

Have been coming to HHI for 25 years and family in Bluffton for the last 11. Was looking for new sights with my 12 year old and came across this museum. We actually did the Bluffton app tour and were driving around and came to the house. We were welcomed by Katie the docent and decided we wanted to try... More

The Heyward House is an antebellum home full of Victorian and Edwardian era textiles and furnishings. The tour is fascinating, focusing on the lives of the families that owned the home and the times that they lived in. We travel a lot and frequently visit historic sites, but we saw some things in this house we had never seen before.... More

We went to Heyward House to see what the town of Bluffton was like. The lady that greater is was great and very informative about the city. She recommended places to eat , visit and shop. She was "spot on" her recommendations. The house had a lot of history. A great first stop for Bluffton.
