Al is a friendly Southern gentleman who will take you on an interesting and educational walk through Charleston's history. He welcomes questions and seems to genuinely enjoy sharing stories about his beloved city. Our group of four friends thoroughly enjoyed Al's tour.

We had a great time with Al. We went on a walking tour in a group of four. We went a little over our 2 1/2 hour which was great because Al was a wealth of information. After walking around Charleston, we wanted to know more about the history and the buildings. Al provided us specific stories as well as... More

We had a fantastic morning on this tour, very informative and interesting, would throughly recommend it to anyone wanting to get a feel of the old city. Not an ideal tour for young children but Al did a great job keeping them involved as well.

Al was a fabulous tour narrator, not only is he a native he is well versed in the history of Charleston, but we got a kick out of the humorous stories, one being about Blackbeard & his cohort. I had to stop and add them to my phone's notes so I wouldn't forget the hilarious lines, for instance, at one... More

Thanks for the great review! Yes indeed, Charleston was quite the lusty town in the old days, and pirates were the local's best friends in the earliest days, hauling Spanish ships into port and selling goods off for pennies on the dollar! They called it the "sweet trade." I love the early history and I'm glad you do too! Send... More

The concept is good, but the execution wasn't that great . . . just OK. The first issue was that it was difficult to book. We had a voucher from a daily deal site and we were not able to book online as instructed until we called the number, left a message, waited for a return call back, gave him... More

This Walking Tour was very balanced and informative. The tour director, Al, provided inexhaustible details of the history, the politics, the personalities, the wartime battles and the architecture and design of the structures in the old city. There were no questions that he couldn't answer. This, along with an engaging personality and sense of humor made this one of the... More

What an awesome review! Thanks so much! I love my home town and I have been studying Charleston History and Lore for nearly 50 years so I possess a certain intrinsic knowledge and I'm glad that you appreciated that. The internet provides access to information that fills in the details to the stories we've been telling for ages. Sometimes, we've... More

We were lucky to have a short-notice tour, and well-adapted to the expectant mother who needed rest breaks on benches. Very accommodating, very personalized tour, gave us the all architectural details, right down to the paint colors. You will enjoy this tour, whichever part of the city you visit. Well worth the cost.

Thank you for the great review! Many people are surprised to learn that I have a background in Occupational Therapy and spent years working in Rehab Clinics. I always assess my groups to determine if there are any special needs or circumstances of which I might be unaware. Then I choose a route that minimizes difficulty or discomfort.. The elderly... My wife and I were lucky enough to have Al give us a tour on our recent stay. Turned out we were the only ones on the tour that morning. We were able to get basically a private tour. Al is completely immersed in Charleston history, having been born in Charleston. His breadth of knowledge of local history was outstanding.... More

Al gave us a great tour of Charleston. He even asked our small group about our interests so he could point out things that we particularly wanted to see. He is fun to be with, knows his history, and has great stories.

If you have an interest in American history, Southern history, or African American history, this tour is for you. The guide is extremely knowledgeable and despite the searing heat and unsettling information about our deeply troubled past, made the experience something I'd happily do again. If it's summer, bring bottled water, wear a floppy hat, and tell Alfred I said... More

Thank you for your great review. The Slavery and Freedom tour is indeed unsettling history, but it was what it was. Not exactly the "fun" tour, it is the only tour in Charleston that explores the mechanics of the slave trade from processing and auction to corporal punishment. The history of a city with more slaves than free is a... More
