Paying respects to our Confederate dead
Apr 2019 • Couples
It was very hard to find the enclosure for the confederate soldiers at the cemetery, but we found it because of the bare flagpoles placed at the area.A very large oak shelters the plot. The graves are marked by name, initials, or in some cases "known only to God" on the headstones. Although the day was very still, as I started to take a picture of the lone monument with a Confederate flag, a sudden breeze from the south made it flutter gallantly just as I took the photo. Rest in peace, brave knights in grey.

Cemetery

This is a beautiful cemetery with a ton of history intertwined. You can take ghost tours and regular tours or you can drive through yourself.

Beautiful Cemetery overall.

The grounds themselves seem to be very well maintained. The office staff was very helpful in finding me a particular grave I was searching for. It could be better along the lines of already having a map already made pointing out notable burials, seeing as it's a pretty big cemetery, so people could drive through and learn more about the people buried there.

One of the oldest cemeteries in Columbia
Oct 2015 • Friends
I love to ride through this cemetery and look at all of the old headstones. You will find an area set aside for soldiers of the Civil War, there is a spot for a lot of the nuns, and you will see a lot of the names of those who helped develop the Columbia area. A little known site is behind the main cemetery where prisoners are buried who have no family claim them. Also, the area where loved ones are placed after their bodies are donated to the USC School of Medicine is in the back as well. Area is not easily accessible by car, but a nice hike can get you there. If you are really adventurous, you can hike to the river and find old grave sites as well! Great piece of history right in downtown Columbia.

If you like cemeteries...
Nov 2015
This is an odd place to review. I am doing so because I went there with family and TA asked if I would review it.

This is a large, clean and well kept cemetery. There are many old family plots here. It was great to see such a place so well taken care of as too many have limited their "upkeep". This place has not. Very interesting place to walk around and learn about the families from this city and state.

History with every step
Nov 2015 • Family
This is an old cemetery that has served Columbia for years. Take your time and see all sections of the grounds. This spot will teach you a history lesson with only a few steps.
Walk to the back and you will notice the area reserved for the Confederate dead. Walk even further back and you will see will see the areas that were for Columbia's black population. If you feel adventurous go through the woods and you will find areas of mass graves that were relocated because of railway and highway construction. There is also a "lost" graveyard where former slaves are buried. There are only a few markers left but with every step you are hallowed ground.
Take your time and try to learn from the past.

Quiet place for solace

We unfortunately had to bury a baby there. The special baby section was beautifully maintained and the spot was even free. I had the privilege of helping the grieving family as their Pastor.

This is a historical wonder for Columbia. There is a Yankee area and a Rebel area. It is very interesting to walk around. Plus it is still an active functioning cemetery. It is peaceful, educational and contemplative area

Great Ghost tour

Interesting old cemetery that had many bodies moved from downtown Columbia to the at that time suburban cemetery.
