Hopsewee Plantation is an original lowcountry rice plantation on the North Santee Rive built between 1735 and 1740. Birthplace of Thomas Lynch Jr., Hopsewee is one of just 12 remaining birthplaces of Signers of the Declaration of Independence. The home has not been modified from its original design and is furnished with 18th and 19th century antiques. Two original slave cabins remain on the property. The guided tour explores the history of the Patriots and Planters who lived at Hopsewee while you explore the architectural features of the house from Attic to Cellar.

Enjoy the hour long tour or just come for lunch in The River Oak Cottage Tearoom with Lowcountry favorites such as Shrimp and Grits, Pulled Pork, Soups and Sandwiches and our Southern Tea service modeled after a British Afternoon Tea.

Arrived at 9:50 am left at 3:30 pm. Every minute was lovely. Our tour guide was so knowledgeable and truly knew how to carry one back to an earlier day. Lunch in the tea room was delicious. My sister and I highly recommend the jalapeno crab corn chowder. The tea room is so feminine, I felt like a grand lady.... More

Every time I see a historic home I always want to go inside so visiting this property was like a dream come true as it is a private home. The owners are very gracious to share their house with the public like they do. You even get to see the modernized kitchen and the bedroom that they use which most... More

Went with friends to Oak Room Tea House for lunch prior to our Plantation tour. We enjoyed sandwiches along with a sampler of Southern fare which was delicious. We shared desserts and enjoyed the Hopswee's own Tea . The hummingbird cake was amazing. The tour was so informative and the tour gulde was great at providing all details about the... More

We visited this remarkably well preserved plantation home of Thomas Lynch Jr one of the 4 signers of the Declaration of Independence from South Carolina. The home was built circa 1735-1740 from black cypress wood. Incredibly the exterior siding is entirely original with 80% of the blown glass windows still in their frames! The interior crown molding was intricately carved... More

We had a wonderful educational tour of the plantation home. We also took time to watch one other educational videos that are offered at the plantation as well. We learned a lot and had a guide who answered all of our questions and added so much to the tour. After the tour we had lunch at the Tea Room. Afterwards... More

I absolutely love the tea room! I've been there about a half dozen times. It's quite a drive from Goose Creek, but it's well worth the trip. The food is fresh, beautifully presented, and delicious.

We had a few hours to spare and decided to visit the Hopsewee Plantation. We were so glad we did. What a wonderful example of the plantations of the Carolina delta. We had a wonderful, knowledgeable guide and enjoyed a tasty desert at the Tea Room after. Highly recommended if you love history.

This is the second time I have taken lady friends to see this gem of the south. We had a delightful tour by a lovely African American of Gullah decent. Oh boy, she was exceptional! We loved her! Please book the tea room for lunch afterwards. We all tried various dishes and everything was delicious and you will not go... More
