We arrived at Fort Mitchel after going through the gate house of a gated community. We told the security guard where we were going and he gave us a pass. Once we pulled up, we noticed the sign that said it was closed for repairs. I'm not sure what repairs, but would have thought we would have been told at... More

Neat little place tucked in a community. Have to go through security gate but very easy to access. Pretty views and markers to tell you about the history of the fort.

We were told by security that the fort was closed due to leaning trees. It is not clear when it will be reopened as cleanup from the October storm is still ongoing

While this Fort is in the gated community of Hilton Head Plantation, anyone can visit; just tell the folk at the gate where you are going and they will give you a pass and directions. Easier to access the fort from the gate off Skull Creek Road than the Main Gate off Rte. 278. This is not a walled fort,... More

When you walk through here, it is hard to believe that men acutally lived here to fight a Civil War. It is not much more that a few ditches overlooking the skull creek.

Wife and I visited and hurricane had done lots of damage. Had it closed but we sneaked in. I hope they get it cleaned up. Looks like Hilton Head Area spends more time in taking care of its golf courses instead of taking care of its history.

Hilton Head’s Port Royal area today is an upscale rental and residential area; however, as time goes, these are recent developments. One of the nicest, upscale dining is at Old Fort Pub, which is neither a Fort nor a Pub. Old Fort Pub is named for Fort Mitchel, a small Union Fort established following the defeat of a small Rebel... More

This is one of the many wonderful places to visit on Hilton Head. You need to ask at the Hilton Head Plantation gate for a pass. They welcome you to visit the site. Fort Pub restaurant is next door and very good, but one of the priciest on the island.

I was surprised to learn that Fort Mitchel (yeah, just one "L") even existed much less the age of the site. Named for Maj Gen Ormsby Mitchel (West Point class of 1829) who commanded the Union Army's Department of the South, who was also honored for his work by naming Mitchelville after him. Very few people are aware that units... More
