The history of Patriots Point Naval & Maritime Museum began in June 1975 when the legendary aircraft carrier USS Yorktown entered Charleston Harbor. A few months later, the USS Yorktown was dedicated as the first ship of the Naval & Maritime Museum on the 200th birthday of the United States Navy. Patriots Point Naval & Maritime Museum was officially opened to the public on January 3, 1976. Today the museum consists of the aircraft carrier USS Yorktown (CV-10) with 29 aircraft on display from WWII to the present; the USS Laffey (DD-724), a Sumner-class destroyer; and the USS Clamagore (SS-343), a GUPPY III submarine. The Congressional Medal of Honor Society is headquartered here and their official Medal of Honor Museum is onboard the USS Yorktown. There is also a Cold War Sub Memorial and Vietnam Support Base Camp on the surrounding grounds.

With family in the area I've been wanting to visit here for some time. We toured the Yorktown everywhere allowed, took in the sub and the destroyer. All were WW2 to the early 60's vintage and in good condition for touring. If you have never...More

It is a nice place and kids over 4 can enjoy the many attractions and run a lot. Has some narrow stairs to go up and down, because of that strollers can be left with no problem outside.

We enjoyed our visit of the Yorktown and Laffy. They rent audio recording devices for $6 but it would have made it ultimate if they had staff positioned throughout the ship to ask different questions or timed stations- hence why I didn't give it 5...More

Thank you for visiting our museum and taking the time to share your review. As we are a "naval & maritime" museum, not specific only to the ships at our museum, we try to provide a history that includes other ships, mainly the "sister ships"...More

Dress for weather. Indoor/outdoor attraction. We visited on a cool rainy day. Visited smaller USS Laffey and submarine first. Actually enjoyed those better than USS Yorktown. Maybe the Yorktown was just too overwhelming in size. Self guided tours overlapped, seemed hard to follow. By end,...More

Very interesting...so much to see and read could really spend several days there. Very thorough coverage of military history. Large space to cover...wear comfortable shoes!! Great photography of events. Some areas of ship incredibly hot...and a bit pricey.
