Had never heard of this fort, found it on Trip Advisor. So glad we did. Different than any fort we've ever been to. Well maintained with a beautiful stretch of beach in front of it. Great for walking and learning.

Although we went on a sunny afternoon, the out-of-the-way location, the ruins overgrown with vegetation and the eerie silence gave us a spooky experience. This fort was built in the 1890's but the present, poor condition makes you feel as if you're at an ancient Mayan site. Just beyond the ruins is the ocean and a lovely beach to which... More

This is an interesting place to visit. We mostly use it for access to the beach on the river but It's got some historical appeal. Built for protection during the Spanish American war but never really used. No saftey railings so keep a close eye on your kids

Old fort leftover from the civil war days I think. The mosquito population has taken over the fort, so it makes visiting and any lengthy exploring almost impossible.

The bugs were horrible. We gave it a half-hearted attempt, but could find nothing redeeming. Don't know how this place makes the recommend list.

We're sorry you were here during the height of mosquito season. Please watch for more information as the County sprays and then begins construction on our new Visitors' Center. More

Kind of sad that this historical fort seriously lacks care. We walked around a bit until the skeeters drove us back to our car.

Directions sparse. Maybe we should have stopped at a visitor center. The place definitely needs restoring, very overgrown. Use bug spray if you get out of the car to trample on the grounds.

I love historical tourism; so I stopped here to check it out. The mosquitos were so bad we were covered immediately. We got on our bug spray and went on in....still getting bitten. Literally the worst mosquito situation I have ever encountered. Worse though was the graffiti inside one of the areas. It was creepy, lewd, and repulsive. If this... More

Thank you for visiting Fort Fremont. We are sorry you rated the experience so low. Yes, the biting insects are terrible this time of year, but unfortunately there is little we can do about that. The Friends of Fort Fremont organization has worked tirelessly with Beaufort County officials and servants to improve the park and batteries for public viewing. Still... More

This was an interesting place to check out, a lot of cool buildings to explore. make sure to bring bug spray or get eaten alive. There isn't much here, so unless you are interested in old structures this is not the place for you, but if you like quiet, nature and exploring, then it's worth a visit.

There is no cost to visit this historical spot. Great place to take the kids 12 and up. It is right on the river, and was once our countries defense against the enemy coming up the river. It never saw battle, but was one of the first to use "the disappearing cannons". Which was state of the art for that... More
