Live re-creations of the town's rich history started in 1924 through the Days of '76 celebration and award-winning rodeo. The celebration began as a way to honor Deadwood's pioneers - the prospectors, miners, muleskinners and madams who poured into the Black Hills in 1876 to settle the gold-filled gulches of Dakota Territory.

Deadwood's newest museum documents the celebration and rodeo. The Days of '76 Museum features exceptional displays of carriages, firearms, American Indian artifacts and illustrates Deadwood's enduring friendship with Buffalo Bill Cody.

The Days of '76 Museum is wheelchair accessible. The Mercantile gift shop is located on the first floor.

We nearly didn't visit this museum but decided to stop on our way out of town going to Rapid City. It is a really interesting place and we spent quite a lot of time wandering around the exhibits. Particularly liked the room with all the old wagons and carts . The information about the rodeos and yearly parade. Some of... More

This is a good stop about an hour or so. Has a lot about the rodeo and the parade. Not to interested in that but the fire arms and wagon coach exhibits are worth the 5.00 admission.

We didn't expect a quality museum like this to detail the history of the Deadwood area so this was a bonus for us. Well worth the stop and admission. Unfortunately couldn't spend the time it deserves.

Great History of the area and displays of The Native Americans and Wild Bill Hitchcock's part in the making of Deadwood. I enjoyed the past to the present pictorial of the famous rodeos and the characters recreated throughout the years. There are displays of actual clothes worn by Wild Bill, Calamity Jane and others. We really liked this museum

There is a lot to see in this museum. The carriage exhibit was my favorite part, but the main floor offers murals, photographs, wildlife exhibits, and Native American information. On the edge of town and fee was $6.

If you don't know anything about the Old (and new) West and want to learn, this is the place: you'll find all you ever wanted to know about rodeos and cattle and old wagons and agriculture. Lots of photography and some videos. A large section on the “Days of 76”, an annual celebration Deadwood started in 1924, to celebrate the... More

Thank you for taking the time to review the Days of '76 Museum. We appreciate your feedback and are deeply sorry you were disappointed. The carriage gallery on the lower level has recently gone through a massive restoration, and yes, some of the components to accompany the historically authentic carriages, wagons, and stagecoaches were recently made to help tell this... The carriage exhibit was interesting before they completed the interpretation presentation of these beautiful carriages. The new presentation better helps to tell the story of Deadwood and for that matter the era of the American West. The massive photographed murals on the walls are of the local area are suburb. My favorite interpretive piece is the backdrop of the town... More

Thank you for your wonderful and thorough review of the Days of '76 Museum. The newly refurbished carriage exhibit is the most dynamic exhibit at the museum, and it was created with great care and detail over the past three years. We truly appreciate your visit. More
