About
Once a humble small-town drugstore that offered free iced water to weary travelers, Wall Drug is now a buzzing 76,000-square-foot roadside attraction that draws travelers to this small city in South Dakota. Here, you can shop for Western-themed apparel at the shopping mall, snap a photo with an 80-foot brontosaurus in the kids' area, and grab a 5-cent coffee and one of the best donuts in the U.S. at the restaurant. And don't leave without getting the iconic Wall Drug bumper sticker—it's free! Wall Drug is a great stop along a tour of the Badlands National Park. – Tripadvisor

Kitschy stop, but must do it anyway!
Yes it's kitschy. But until revisiting last month, I forgot how homey and cute it is, too. The history is interesting, be sure to read it beforehand to see how this family started the drug store and then expanded and built it into what it is today. I suggest you park at one end of what looks like a typical "main street" and enter the buildings there. You soon realize that they are all interconnected by interior doors all the way down the street, and you can walk from one end of the street to the other all inside the shops. The shops tend to have similar items for sale, except some unique ones (rocks & minerals, horses and saddlery items, and regional books - all those had quite interesting individualized shops). So if you go into a couple shops that are similar, don't give up just yet, try to get through all the shops even if you have to move fast. FYI at the back of most shops (away from street) is a bathroom. You can end up back in the middle at the cafe, and try out their famous open-faced hot roast beef sandwich. It was good, maybe just a bit overpriced. Donuts were good too. Coffee is stated to be 5 cents, but there are a couple of large pots in the middle of the cafe area and you serve yourself and supposedly place 5 cents in a box when you do so...so if you're extremely honest it costs 5 cents, but otherwise I saw lots of folks getting free coffee. The place is very dog friendly except inside the cafe, you can bring a dog through all the shops with no issues. It is the best place to stop within the 20 miles stretch of interstate, that's for sure...even though it's a kitsch, it's fun.

    Wall Drug, a family tradition
Put plain and simple, stopping at Wall Drug is a family tradition. I've been stopping here since I was a kid (1957) I've seen a lot of changes but through it all it's still Wall Drug. Yeah, many would call it a tourist trap but they feature good good, cheap coffee and a chance to chow down on a buffalo burger for those who have eaten one. They are a real drug store as well as offering quality Black Hills gold jewelry. A terrific book store, as well as a place to grab a tee-shirt, or pick up some camping gear.

Everything I hoped it would be
Frickin awesome! The 100+ signs along I-90 really build the anticipation, and it totally met what I hoped it was. Crazy collection of stores, memorabilia, food, souvenirs, and about a million other things you don't really need but want to check out anyway. Had lunch at the cafeteria. Buffalo burgers were pretty good. Don't forget the free water and free bumper sticker.

Interesting to See but too Crowded for Our Comfort
This is one of those places you kind of have to see if you are in the area, but not a place I would go out of my way for. It is interesting to see what it started as in 1931 and what it has grown into today. I would say that it has kept Wall as a destination along I-90. It is definitely geared toward tourism and in this age of continuing Covid, was a bit too crowded for our tastes.

A very large Tourist Trap with a decent lunch!
This is an old fashion Walmart. The pot roast hot sandwich was good with the free ice water! Wall Drug spends tons of money on advertising along I90 with all the billboards and it does live up to it's reputation. Some may say the best tourist trap ever! It was a good place to stop for lunch and we did a little souvenir shopping. The T-Rex was fun to watch too.

    Wall Drug
We go to South Dakota every year for my husband’s annual hunting trip. He missed the draw this year so we went just as tourists. Wall Drug is a must see. Be sure to check out the western art and bronzes. Museum quality! Lots of photo ops on the jackalope, lots of excellent shopping, and of course the free ice water and nickel coffee! It’s a good place to pick up snacks for a trip to the Badlands 6 miles down the road, or new boots or artwork in one of the many shops.

I had to stop. Wall Drugs was a case study in one of my MBA classes.
My wife called this “The Greatest Tourist Trap she’d ever seen.” I’m inclined to be more generous. I will give it the title of “Tourist Trap,” but it has always been a “Tourist Trap” from the beginning, offering “free ice water” in the early days to attract customers. Wall Drugs was a case study from one of my MBA classes, so I had to stop. It makes for great people-watching. My wife also threw out some comment about fools and their money, but I had stopped listening at this point. There’s pretty much the same merchandise in every shop, except for branded “Wall, SD”; there is nothing that can’t be found in every other tourist stop or on Amazon. Be prepared for massive crowds, clogged, smoke-choked sidewalks in an area that covers two blocks. We ate in the on-site café and had buffalo burgers. We weren’t impressed (Our Ted’s in Atlanta makes a better buffalo burger, and it is cheaper also). If you are not pressed for time, I still recommend this stop.

    Definitely worth a stop!
This was a pretty cool stop with lots to see, do and experience. Fun photo opportunities plus lots of awesome souvenirs and different shops, as well as snacks and beverages. We could have even spent more time exploring.

    Free water
I remember visiting as a kid, and many of the same stores and attractions are still there, but expanded. This is definitely a tourist trap, but there are plenty of amusing sights in addition to the gift shops and restaurants. We got our pictures with the jackelope, and saw the T-Rex, peeked into the chapel, and perused the cowboy boots. It’s a fun stop if you like touristy things.

Fun shopping, really good pie and coffee.
We visited Wall Drug on our trip to the Badlands. Didn’t know quite what to expect but we were not disappointed! It was a really fun part of our trip. Even got some holiday shopping in..lots of different shops and history with a legacy. Really nice staff, too.

It's like walking through a themed hotel in Vegas. If you get your mentality set to that expectation, then you can enjoy it for what it is. As you walk around, there are different stores for different goods, such as camping, books, etc. There's sections of souvenirs and those items are sold at multiple sections. The line to the cafe was much too long so while curious about the 5 cent coffee experience, we didn't think it would be worth hanging around. I apparently also missed the jackalope out back but did catch the dinosaur nearby but didn't think it was worth stopping for. There's benches with statues of people sitting on them that you can pose with. Knott's Berry Farm used to have that but not sure what other amusement parks had them, for reference. (I marked travelled as solo because there's no family option w/o children. Some of us drive around our senior parents. That's family last time I checked.)

I have mixed feelings about Wall Drug. There are some good things and some bad things. I'll start with the bad news, the restaurant isn't that great and it's expensive. I ordered the chicken tenders and they were twelve bucks for three puny chicken tenders. I was kind of annoyed by that. It's a pay and then pick up your food arrangement. I wish I would have gotten the buffalo burger. Second, there are little shops EVERYWHERE in this place to buy stuff. It's confusing and a map is really necessary here. The one thing I love about this place: The Donuts. The Donuts are truly magical and large. We picked up a dozen for a family of four and it took a couple days to finish them.

Wall Drug is truly the embodiment of tourist attractions, which they advertise all along the I-90 route. Location is very similar to a mall in how they have numerous sections/shops set-up. With being so large, there's a nice selection of different types of stores as well as a restaurant and activity area in the back. However, being a tourist attraction, most of the stuff is fairly kitschy and/or overpriced.

While passing through the area, we decided to stop and visit Wall Drug, since that's one of those touristy things you do. Spent about an hour browsing through the various sections of stores, where we did buy a few items for the kids and gifts for family. Being midday, we ended up staying for lunch, which was decent food but horrible overpriced (i.e., probably paid twice the price of what things were worth). Ended the visit by letting the kids play for a bit in the backyard area. Kids had fun watching the T-Rex animate for dinner time. They also had fun running around in the splash pad area and climbing on some of the statues (such as the jackalope).

Overall, a fun albeit pricey experience. Glad that we took the time to stop, but it's not a place that I would have visited if we weren't already passing by it.

Donuts were great! Several free things to see-be sure you hit the back lot with the picture spots and free cold water. Bathrooms were clean. Most souvenirs were more affordable than other tourist attractions around. Teenagers were mildly entertained. Adults and kids under 10 enjoyed. We were there about an hour and a half. We were also there mid-morning and wasn’t crowded but it was getting busy when we left just before noon.

This was an interesting and worthwhile stop! The signs along the way were too funny not to go. We enjoyed a donut and a coffee for very cheap and filled up our water bottles. I will say that for being a tourist stop, it should be mandatory for people to wear masks. This is in a very rural part of the country but you have people from all over coming and going and for the safety of the staff and guests, they should require it.

They start advertising as soon as you enter South Dakota. Is it worth it? I don't think so but that's just me. Tourist trap for sure. Hard to social distance and not everyone wears a mask. The cafe wasn't worth it, but the kids enjoyed their grilled cheeses. Photo ops plenty. Parking plenty.

You can easily spend hours in here because it is so large, crowded and diverse. We did not even get to all the other tourist stops along the same section of downtown street. The only real negative was the Cafe. The food was obviously preprocessed and really over priced. The coffe, however, which is 5 cents - was very good,

Who could resist visiting Wall Drug after 65 highway signs heading west, especially because it is convenient and part of Badlands culture. The store is huge and designed to shuffle a multitude of people. (It would have been a nightmare in the pandemic!) We had sandwiches for lunch and found the system accurate and efficient for feeding such a number of customers. The parking is all around town and I would think a person in a wheelchair or walker would have considerable difficulty.

The staff is friendly as you travel through the various departments following the store map. We munched on donuts, drank free water and had 5 cent coffee. Crowds don't make me feel like shopping so I passed on $600 western boots and $1.95 souvenirs made in China. It is a good experience but not one that I want to repeat.

This place is the only thing that Wall, SD has to offer. It’s very campy and quirky. Some people would say that if you can’t find it at Wall Drug you probably didn’t need it. I can honestly say there is nothing I needed there. There are three things they tout as what you should stop and have - food, desserts and coffee. I tried them all. The food was ordinary, desserts ordinary, and the coffee was ordinary. Ordinary does not mean good. Also, they have such a death grip on the town there are no other viable entertainment or eating places to choose from. Almost forgot........the hotel/motel alternatives just plain suck but that’s another review soon to come. If you want to visit the Badlands, do yourself a favor, stay in Rapid City and commute the 60 miles each way.

This is a cute little pit stop. As you drive along I-90 the signs are cute. For you east coast folks, it reminded me of all the signs leading up to South of the Border.

This establishment is a lot bigger than I expected. It has fun gift shops, a traveler’s chapel and some surprisingly good food! The service was quick and efficient and you can’t beat a $.05 cup of coffee.

It’s a nice place to start or finish your tour of the Badlands.
