The Cowan Railroad Museum represents the railroad that has been an integral part of the city since 1849 when construction began on boring a railroad tunnel through the mountain two miles southeast of town. The Cumberland Mountain Tunnel was finished in 1852 before the railroad actually made it to Cowan from Nashville. The town, the railroad and the tunnel still exist today. In support of that endeavor and later frequent trains through this region, a substantial frame depot was built in 1904, and that building is where the museum now houses its collection for your enjoyment. View railroad artifacts and memoriabilia with a step back in time. Thousands of papers and books make it a must-see place for railroad historians.Free admission, but donations gladly accepted. All volunteer organization is open May through October, Monday, Thursday, Friday and Saturday from 10 am to 4 pm; Sundays from 1 to 4 pm.

The kids loved this place. We aren't train nuts or anything, but we certainly enjoyed climbing around on the steam locomotive and cars. The diesel engine needs some work and was certainly secondary to the steam engine. However, it's free! Unfortunately the museum was closed...More

In addition to a train locomotive and cars, including a caboose, the items and pictures inside are a glimpse into to a bygone time. It's well worth your time.

No one in this town was nice. Ever went to a gas station that wouldn't let you use he bathroom? They serve food and should let patrons use the bathroom. Bunch of Indians own it. Do not come to this town. It reminds me of...More
